look out to the future
Who: The Avengers, Wonderland-style (Steve Rogers, Thor Odinson, Wanda Maximoff, Bucky Barnes, Billy Kaplan, Rocket)
Where: The training area
When: 08/16 and the following days
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Let's get down to business...! Mingle training log for the Avengers!
The Story:
A few days have passed since the event ended, enough time for everyone to recover from being thrown into the zombie apocalypse. Steve's heard a few whispers about people getting infected and having to be put down, though he's relieved to know that as far as he's aware, no one he's close to went through something that scarring.
He's also relieved to be back to what he considers "normal," and it's that which has him down in the training area on Sunday afternoon. He finds it empty, which is a pretty rare thing, although he soon realizes he could change that, presumably with nothing more than a text message. He's put this off for too long already and he can't say for sure that his new team has been proactive enough to seek each other out on their own time, so what better moment than the present?
Each of the five other members of the team will receive a text message: Avengers Assemble. 1500 hours at the training center.
Steve waits (in full uniform, no less) for them all to arrive one-by-one until everyone has gathered, at which point he stands before them to deliver a brief speech. Thankfully this sort of thing comes naturally to him by now, so there's no awkwardness in his tone or bearing.
"I know I threw this team together pretty unexpectedly, but I thought it was important for the Avengers to exist even here in Wonderland. We're not really gonna be a team unless we start acting like one, though, so pair off, get to know each other, show everyone what you can do. We can start to figure out strategies and make sure we know the best way to cooperate with each other in a fight. We've all got our own talents, let's put them to good use, all right?"
They have the entire training room to themselves, though Steve won't mind if someone pokes their head in to watch. The place is huge, with all different kinds of training courses meant to cater to various skillsets, so Steve's pretty sure the six of them can spend a lot of time here in the coming days.
[ OOC: It's a mingle log! Post open comments, tag around, play out whatever combination you see fit! ]

OTA!
As far as her powers are concerned, Wanda's control is impressive for how relatively new they still are-- and yet far too easily influenced by her emotions, something that has been a struggle ever since her arrival in Wonderland. She'll spend a portion of her time in the training room working alone, watching her teammates rather than engaging, leaning them and the way they fight-- though the reason for her remaining so withdrawn is safety, more than anything else. Until she's certain she can control the blast radius of her hex bolts, or keep herself focused enough to prevent any stray blasts of energy from careening towards one of her teammates before she can halt it, she's uncomfortable directing any of her attacks towards anyone living, though there are a number of training targets that look much worse for wear by the time she's through with them.
Sparring is an option, should anyone be interested, but it's very possibly she'll play it a bit too safe-- with the exception of Billy, who she moves towards when Steve instructs them to find partners. Their powers are similar enough that she trusts him to be able to counter her should she slip, and she has hope that learning more about Billy's powers will help her to further develop and master her own. Otherwise, she'll be hard at work in the training room throughout the day and those that follow, dedicated to honing her abilities to make herself an asset to the team rather than a potential risk.

The only way she's going to get over that fear of her own strength is if she practices using it on a living target, and Steve's job is pretty much to be a human punching bag. Even if she does harm him, he'll heal fast enough that it won't be a problem. So will Thor and Bucky, for that matter, but Wanda doesn't know them quite so well.
Steve's the one who recruited her in the first place. Steve's the first person who decided that maybe Wanda and her brother could be trusted. He thinks if she'll let anyone convince her to go the next step in her training, it would be him.
So he steps over as she goes to town on one of the training dummies, waiting until she's paused to take a break before he moves any closer.
"Wanna try throwing a few of those at me?" he asks with a casual shrug of his shoulders, lifting his shield arm slightly.

It's been difficult to trust herself.
She purses her lips slightly, looking at his shield in question.
"You are sure about this?"
no subject
If he fails to do that, then it's on him, not her. Not that Steve suspects she'll view it that way.
He spreads his legs slightly as he gets into a defensive stance and then holds the shield up against his chest to shield the majority of his vital organs.
"Ready when you are."

If he wanted to see what she could do now that they weren't fighting for their lives, she would do her utmost to show him exactly what she was capable of.
She fires two bolts in rapid succession, the first with a flick of her right hand the other with her left as she bends to let it fly loose above her head, a good two feet higher than the first, both bolts hurtling towards him quickly, though far enough apart that he could easily block one and dodge the other, if he was fast-- something she knew full well he was. She's holding back, some, but it seems as good a place as any to start.

Steve darts out of the way of the first blast and then lifts his shield up to block the second. Just like anything else that collides with the shield, the red energy fizzles against the vibranium.
Steve's not sure how Wanda will respond to goading, but there's only one way to find out. He smirks at her, though his defense stance hasn't loosened any. "This is a little more interesting than tearing apart training dummies, right?"
no subject
"Interesting," she repeats, as though tasting the word itself on her tongue, and the phrase itself seems to amuse her. "Yes, you could say that. Dummies don't fight back, after all."
But he can-- and she suspects he will.

That remark of hers is his queue to shift into the offensive. A lot of Wanda's abilities involve long-range attacks, so it makes sense for him to move in close to try and get the upper hand that way.
So Steve sprints toward her -- nowhere near as fast as Pietro would be but still pretty fast -- and then swings his shield at her while keeping a hold on it, giving her ample room to dodge.
