[ ACTION ] OTA: You'll Never Know How Many Dreams I Dreamed About You

Who: Everyone is welcome, children and adults alike.
Where: First floor, ballroom.
When: Friday the 13th, from 9:00 in the evening on.
Rating: E (for Everyone)
Summary: Semi-formal themed fête.

[Guided by brassy music down an expansive hall residents will enter the first floor ballroom: it has undergone many transformations in its time, and suffered the myriad slings and arrows of Wonderland's event-related torment, but tonight its purpose has shaped it into something glittering and streamlined, the décor as advertised not long before. While socialising does appear to be the primary function, the arrangement of amenities would suggest differently.

The gilded walls border on overly opulent and a dancefloor - ringed with refreshment tables, an open bar, and scattered seating - is pointedly centred, and the brass band for which a Vendor Ticket was exchanged explodes with forceful tunes from a handful of different eras, some of which might be recognisable to those of the twenty-first century.

The only uncertainty is how one might spend the evening.

bar;
Of course he's at the bar. He's got a policy, and that policy is that it's not alcoholism until he's at least in his early thirties.

At least he had the decency to try and fit in. Inasmuch as someone like him can, anyway. He ended up with a derby hat thing too, but it looked pretty damned stupid on him, so he ended up leaving it on someone's chair and hoping they'd spring for a free derby.

He's perched on one of the barstools, experimenting with mixed drinks and taking his sweet time nursing them. He's not overly eager to strike up a conversation at this point, but once alcohol gets involved, inhibition is usually the first thing to go.
literally anywhere;
[He's so not a music major. He isn't, honest. But he won't mind mingling now that he's had a few drinks.

He even takes out his camera - it's not era-appropriate, but who gives a damn? And starts getting a couple shots when it suits him. Out-of-focus frames of people dancing, images of shiny polished shoes crossing back and forth, distant angles of the odd group socializing.

Don't mind the weird kid with the camera. It's just for, uh, posterity. Really.]

[Hey, she's not the only one drinking heavily and trying to fit in! That's nice, actually. She's appropriately dapper and waits a bit before approaching him, moving from the other side of the bar to take the stool next to his.]

Hey. You look... better than you did in the tunnels. Nice to see you again.

[She's not perfect at conversation.]
rosswood: (that's not tomato juice)

ayyyyyyyyy

[personal profile] rosswood 2016-05-14 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I clean up nice.

[He does his best to smirk disarmingly, but he thinks it comes out a little strained. Fancy dress isn't really thing, and everyone can probably tell.]

Not too shabby yourself.
normandysbest: (« [Default] whattup nerds)

ayyyy lmao

[personal profile] normandysbest 2016-05-16 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
[She snickers a bit. If there's anything Shepard understands, it's trying to look casual in fancy situations. She's a lot more comfortable on the battlefield than she'll ever be at a fancy party.]

Thanks. Had no idea what the theme was, exactly, so I just sort of figured this stuff probably wouldn't stand out too much. Or I'd just look super overdressed, get drunk at the bar, and people still probably wouldn't care. You know how it is.
rosswood: (all they'd find would be teeth)

[personal profile] rosswood 2016-05-16 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell yeah.

[He pours himself another handle of something decidedly alcoholic and starts sipping it down. No pacing himself tonight, it seems.]

Yeah, uh, I'm not really one for dress codes. This whole twenties-thirties thing isn't really my area.

[Not that he doesn't appreciate the hell out of the aesthetic, but it's not like there were tons of good movies out back then. You got a few key moments in film back then, the true classics and codifiers, but those were pretty few and far between.]
normandysbest: (« [Look] What the heckie)

[personal profile] normandysbest 2016-05-18 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, see, when someone says 'the 30's' back home, they mean 2130, and they're talking about colonizing a planet. Not big band jazz and alcohol.

[It was also before she was alive, so. You know.]

This is nicer, though. Er, quaint? Less guns, which is better for a themed party, I guess.

[She just takes another swig of her drink. Who lets her talk to people literally ever when she's still sober? There are people that look up to her as their hero. She knows it's not for her speeches.]
rosswood: (all they'd find would be teeth)

[personal profile] rosswood 2016-05-18 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Jesus. He almost forgot - she's one of those future-y types, huh? Of course, his first impression of her was a lady in full battle-armor shooting down zombies left and right, so maybe he shouldn't have forgotten so easily.]

Yeah well, less guns is good. We get plenty of violence when people aren't hosting parties.

[And sometimes when people are hosting parties. Never a dull moment in Wonderland.]

I guess this whole theme would include guns, though. 1920's were big on those.
normandysbest: (« [Sass] Insert Shitty Joke Here)

[personal profile] normandysbest 2016-05-18 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
[She chuckles. Yeah, there's a lot of guns here anyway. Least they could do is a single night without 'em.]

Yeah, I mean, it's not an old enough theme that guns didn't exist. But I figure the point of most people's parties doesn't involve shooting? Or at least, they don't appreciate when you start shooting. Sort of ruins the mood.

[The last party she hosted turned into partial target practice, anyway. It was... it sure was. That's what happens when you party with a bunch of assassins and mercenaries.]
rosswood: (a what a fucke)

[personal profile] rosswood 2016-05-18 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not wrong.

[He huffs out a short, amused laugh.]

Unless you're one of those people who unwinds by shooting things. Which is, uh, a surprisingly stress-relieving activity.

[Not that he does that as a hobby or anything. Or has the capacity to. Or anything.]

The next time Alex swings his camera to the left to take a picture, Max ends up in the frame, pointing her own camera at him. There's a quick snip of the shutter release before she lowers her Polaroid with a grin, swiping away the instant photo as it comes out of the camera.

"Gotcha, Alex."

She's not exactly dressed very well. It took quite a few attempts to finally coax a 1940s dress out of the closet... at least one that didn't have some sort of plunging neckline or bare shoulder or slit. Whatever- she likes how it doesn't ask for much attention.

"Getting any good shots?"

She'd gotten so caught up with taking the picture that she sort of forgot he almost killed her. But now that memory awkwardly resurfaces and she shuffles her feet.

[personal profile] rosswood 2016-05-14 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
He snorts at the ridiculous image the two of them cut, lenses trained on each other like a couple documentary-makers or something.

"As much as someone like me can, yeah." His little electrostatic problem doesn't exactly make this easy, but it's not so bad as long as he keeps his chill, he's found. Which he totally does. One hundred percent. No problems there.

He has absolutely no idea how to breach the elephant in the room. Like, at all. He blinks at Max awkwardly, swallows hard, and looks away.

"How, uh...how've you been? Haven't really seen you around since, uh."

And look at that, he's already mentioned the thing he told himself he wasn't gonna mention.
mypartnerintime: (Can I save her?)

[personal profile] mypartnerintime 2016-05-15 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Like a couple of amateurs, right? The photo gets stuffed into her bag, the motion helping to hide all the awkward. Sort of.

"That's probably on me. I've mostly been in the library or my room." Or else hanging out with Chloe on late nights. But socializing? Max hasn't been doing much.

"But I'm peachy." Which partly means her shoulder has healed well. She hardly even notices it these days. "How was the last event?"
rosswood: (a what a fucke)

[personal profile] rosswood 2016-05-15 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Boy, but does he feel that.

"Yeah," says Alex with a faint sound of self-deprecating amusement. "I've kinda been keeping to myself too." Better that way, he's learned. Fewer people get stabbed, and everyone gets to walk away from conversations happy.

"A laugh and a half. Got some kind of fancy necklace thing from those tunnels." He...yeah, remember that whole thing about being careful, because he's died twice now? "And I didn't even die once!"

Does hanging a self-effacing lampshade on the fact make it more bearable? Probably not, huh.
mypartnerintime: (The universe is taunting me)

[personal profile] mypartnerintime 2016-05-15 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
She's not exactly happy that he's keeping to himself even on regular, non-event days. The stuff that bothers him is not the kind of thing that gets better when you're on your own all the time. What does he get around to, anyway? Hanging around with the lights off, being all dramatic no doubt. Kind of a funny thought, though it shouldn't be.

She doesn't bother to hide her eyeroll at the bad save. "Because that was totally worth a necklace, right?" Well. She and Chloe also went down there, but mostly kept to themselves. So it's a little hypocritical. "But I'm glad you made it out okay. And it's good you're out socializing."
rosswood: (all they'd find would be teeth)

[personal profile] rosswood 2016-05-15 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"I had back-up, all right?" He didn't go in alone, what do you take him for? "And besides, it's not like I'm any safer in the mansion, you know?"

He's not saying the necklace was worth it because, honestly, he has no idea. Apparently it's some kind of...damage...reduction thing? Might come in handy. Might even save his life. Moreso than that goddamn rock-thing with the googly eyes did.
mypartnerintime: (Cute robot panda keychain)

[personal profile] mypartnerintime 2016-05-15 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay, okay." She disagrees about it being just as dangerous in the mansion, but decides to stop with the nagging. She doesn't really want to turn into that friend. "Who did you go with?"
rosswood: (a what a fucke)

[personal profile] rosswood 2016-05-15 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Guy called Jack. From some kinda...future-world, I guess." He makes a vague, equivocal hand gesture. He kept calling phones ECHO devices and stuff, spouting shit about planets and whatnot. "What about you? I'm guessing you, uh...did the smart thing?"

And stayed on topside. Ha. Nice one, Kralie. High-fucking-five.

Alex doesn't want to say it's impressive that he doesn't jump or curse or flinch, he's not one to toot his own horn, but come on. He totally is one to toot his own horn. And it's goddamned impressive that he doesn't lose his cool, but simply turns to face her smoothly as he pours himself a fresh handle.]

Alex matches her sigh with a weary groan, digging the heel of his palm into one eye socket. Christ, he's tired.]

Yeah. She's...well, I dunno if she's absolutely cool with it. She keeps saying she is, but, y'know.

We were.

[Past tense.]

...are? I dunno. Turns out trying to kill someone will really put a block in your relationship. Who knew, right?

[Cue laugh. But it's dry and humorless. He knows he fucked up, and fixing things isn't exactly his area. Once a bridge gets burning, Alex either adds another can of gasoline or walks away to let it burn.]
