first notes § a classy diner

the story: a detective walks into a diner for some pancakes and....

option 1 - for the employees

[ while this isn't leblanc, per say, it still has a rather comforting feel to it. he isn't sure if it's the decor or the general energy in the diner, but it seems to call to him the same way that the tiny curry and coffeeshop did back in tokyo. it's not insanely crowded but it has enough interesting faces to keep him intrigued. still, that's not to say he's actively seeking conversation. rather, he's brought a book from the library down to the diner to thumb through as he takes a break from investigating the hot mess he's found himself in.

there's a pencil stuck between his teeth, brown fringe covering his eyes as he skims the pages of the book. occasionally, he plucks the pencil out to scribble something down in the margin, and then just like that, the pencil returns dutifully to his mouth.

he hasn't ordered yet, a bit lost in thought over the pages of paradise lost. ]

option 2 - for others

[ now that he has his coffee (it's really a necessity in life), he's taken a break from the pages of the riveting story to glance around the diner. simply surveying the area for any "familiar faces." one leg is crossed against another, dangling off the edge of the stool, toe of his shoe tapping light sounds against the counter in front of him.

as usual, each and every lock of hair is perfectly in place and he's wearing his tan jacket complete with a drab, striped tie. although he enjoys the tranquility, he can't help but catch the gaze of anyone who walks into this diner. namely, you.

there's a bright, undeniably charismatic smile that appears and he lifts a hand politely up in way of greeting. ]

May I ask you a question?

You--and they--think they're supernatural in origin. Why?

Call it a hunch.

[ he matches souji's gaze again. ]

And of course a lack of evidence for any other conclusion.

Then there's evidence that does point to that conclusion?

Nothing that would withstand a courtroom.

[ but that's a yes..... ]

Because it's supernatural.

[Come on Goro, don't make him jump through these conversational hoops.]

[ if this is bad, you're in for a treat, souji. ]

Yes. Unfortunately, there's no standard for that type of evidence. And most people tend not to believe in things like that, anyway.

[Souji knows he's not likely to get a whole lot more out of Goro, but that doesn't mean he's giving up yet.]

You're in Wonderland. People here would probably believe you.

[ given that it seems, so far, a very consequence-free environment -- ]

There's an idea that people can enter the innermost thoughts of a person. It sounds rather foolish to say aloud, I must admit.

Like telepathy? Or...?

[Or something else? Not that he knows what "something else" would be.]

Something a bit more invasive.

[ hm ]

Almost as if a person can enter another's mind and change who they are by sheer force.

[eatsyourscience]

[Huh. It does sound far-fetched, but he used to jump in and out of TVs all the time, so who is he to judge?]

I can see why the Prosecutor's Office would take it seriously. But what can they do about it?

I suppose when you've suddenly become a target, you start to take even silly things seriously.

[ and it's said with a smile, so... ]

[Souji raises his eyebrows a bit.]

How do you fight against something like that?

[It didn't get by him that you didn't answer the question the first time, Goro.]

[jurisdick]

[ shhhhhh. ]

Are you asking standing in the shoes of the victim or the law?

[eatsyourscience]

In this case, isn't the victim on the side of the law?

[So both.]

[jurisdick]

[ he smiles, and it's a bit less fake. ]

Not always.

[eatsyourscience]

[Huh.]

Is it someone you would want to see saved?

[jurisdick]

[ that's a very probing question. ]

My opinion hardly matters in this situation. Shouldn't the law treat each person equally?

[eatsyourscience]

[He nods.] But it doesn't always.

[He shifts his weight to his other foot, bracing one hand against the edge of the counter as he considers.]

What would you do to save them, then?

[jurisdick]

Me?

[ blinks. ]

Whatever was possible within my powers.

[eatsyourscience]

What could you do against something supernatural?

[Something that can get into peoples' heads like that sounds pretty tough for a normal person to beat.]

[jurisdick]

[ how smart.... ]

That's the question, isn't it. And the one that's plaguing the police department for weeks.

[eatsyourscience]

In my experience, the police are the last ones to have the answers.

[He's a little surprised at himself for saying that once the words are out in the air. He has a healthy respect for the police, sure, but they can be useless sometimes. Sometimes on purpose.]

[jurisdick]

[ he's sounding more and more like akira. and it's both intriguing and frustrating. ]

Is that so? Did something happen?

[eatsyourscience]

Not recently.

[He does consider telling a bit about it, though. Goro's been telling him about whatever case he's pursuing--then again, Goro's been telling him in the most frustrating manner possible.]

Like I said, I know some detectives.
