Summary: It’s Mettaton’s One Year Anniversary Concert! Come on in and celebrate with him!
The Story:

It’s been a strange year for Wonderland’s favorite celebrity. He’s made friends and enemies, he’s seen things both strange and hauntingly beautiful and he’s had many laughs to fill his time. He never imagined he’d be here for an entire year but it seems his contract with this place isn’t expiring anytime soon.

So what better way to celebrate an anniversary than with a performance?

During the day on May 31st posters pop up all over the mansion, on pillars and walls and light fixtures and also some rose bushes in the gardens because of course. They all have one thing in common: beautiful gold typography advertising-

MTT’S GRAND ONE YEAR WONDERLAND ANNIVERSARY! COME ONE, COME ALL, TO ANOTHER SPECTACULAR MTT-BRAND CONCERT!

CELEBRATE A FANTASTIC YEAR WITH YOURS TRULY! DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY WITH QUALITY ENTERTAINMENT! TAKE A BREAK FROM THE MUNDANE TO SPEND A NIGHT SURROUNDED BY GLAMOUR! PARTY WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND GET AWAY FROM IT ALL!

FOOD AND DRINK WILL BE PROVIDED, AS ALWAYS! PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND SPECIES ARE WELCOME!

SET UP - OTA

[Wonderland does a lot to accommodate its residents, but it can’t physically hang up decorations nor set food tables in the exact fashion you want it set. At least, if it can, Mettaton isn’t satisfied with letting it do it all on its own. Anyone who shows up early will find the robot busy with preparations and cleaning up anything left over from his last concert. If you lend a hand, he’d certainly be grateful! Though any company during preparations he makes would make the star glad.]

[Mikan headed there early, paranoid that by waiting she'd miss it entirely. Ah, but he's setting up... Is it rude to interrupt? ... Oh, wait, maybe...]

Um... C-Can I help?

[Mettaton for once is caught off guard, jumping a little at the sound of Mikan's voice. He turns around and when he sees her smiles a warm smile.]

Mikan! Gracious, you're here early aren't you?

[He gestures to a bucket of streamers sitting on the floor nearby.]

That's sweet of you to offer! You most certainly can. Would you like to help me hang those us?

[naughty_nurse]

[Relief floods through her - maybe they can have a normal time together with no tears or horrific revelations. She smiles nervously, walking inside.]

Y-Yes, of course! I'd be really happy to help you out! I can't wait to see the concert...

[She eagerly makes her way to the bucket, and doesn't even trip!]

[Goodness, Mettaton hopes for that too because wow does he need a break from the sensationalism that is his life. Which is saying something since this is Mettaton we're talking about here.]

Thank you so much, Mikan. I can handle this on my own but having an extra pair of hands is always better.

[He goes back to adjusting some banners and tacking up some signs but after a few moments he shoots her a question.]

Remind me, how long have you been in Wonderland now, darling?

[naughty_nurse]

[Mikan stops what she's doing in order to think.]

Umm... Maybe... A year now? It's hard to keep track, since this place messes with memories so much.

[mettatonvevo]

[He watches her as she thinks and smiles a bit when she answers.]

So you came not too long before me then? Interesting.

[He continues to mess with one banner in particular that is giving him a hard time, smiling gently as he does.]

Wonderland has made me live so many alternate lives, sometimes I catch myself thinking of something or someone that didn't exist at all. Does that happen to you?

[Every now and then his mind strays to that one body guard in Genosha who gave his life to save his. He wasn't real, a Wonderland construct, and yet... it lingers with him still.]

[That's... a smidgen depressing.]

... Sometimes I think of the time we were at Hogwarts. I really liked it... The people were nice, I got to learn things, and I felt like I had a future. Like... life beyond school.

But I guess that's kind of silly.

[mettatonvevo]

I don't think that's silly at all!

[In fact, it makes him smile. He had almost forgotten about that event; another good one in his book.]

I was human in that event. It was interesting being a human with magic. That entire culture was so completely different from my own in its relationship with magic that it was fascinating while I thought I was a part of it and afterwards, when I remembered who I was.

That's part of what this concert of mine is about. Celebrating the good that has come out of being stuck here.

[naughty_nurse]

[As always, his approval calms her down.]

I wish I could have kept the magic, so I could heal people with it...But you're right. There's so much good stuff here. I made so many friends, learned so many things, made nice memories... I n-never want to leave. I want to stay in Wonderland forever and ever.

[She would want to keep the magic to help others. Mettaton wishes he could have kept both kinds of magic if only for the ability to do practically anything he wanted with a wand.]

See, in the end, it's not Wonderland that makes life worth it here, but the people we are trapped with. We all make this patch of hell into a heaven.

[Mikan speaks of wanting to stay forever and ever and Mettaton smiles, fixing the banner in place. On that front, they couldn't be farther from agreeing. If a tear opened up next to them right now that promised to bring them both home, Mettaton would step through after only a few moments hesitation.]

I hope that so long as this place makes you happy, you get your wish.

[Mettaton knows what awaits him, at least... Mikan doesn't. Time and time again she thought she could trust her classmates, but then a murder would occur... She could have been next, for all she knew. But in Wonderland, the dead always return. It's a guarantee.

... And no one would betray her here. Right?]

Mettaton... Do you have any wishes? Is there something you really want?

[He hasn't thought about her circumstances that much in awhile. But it makes sense that she'd want to stay when he does. Who would want to go back to senseless murder, to such despair?

It's not as if home is that safe for him either. In the end, Frisk could always reset it all.]

Something I really want? Well, to be more famous. To have the entire world adore me. You know, something small like that.

[He gives her a wink. If he were more honest, well. It would be to have the fame but still somehow have select people be close to him. But it's an impossible dream.]

[Mikan nods once - it makes sense, given that Mettaton is... well, Mettaton. But she'd also hoped that it was something she could help with, to help repay for all he's done for her.]

Well, for now, Wonderland is our entire world, in a way... And almost everyone here knows you. So, maybe, kind of, you are world famous...?

[Mettaton laughs, delighted at Mikan's words.]

Now that's a spin on Wonderland I would enjoy! I don't know if everyone here knows me, but it's certainly hard not to see me!

[He's certainly made an impression on a lot of people, at least.]

By the time I am done here, I do hope everyone knows me.

Um... I-Is there any way I can help? I-I could try telling everyone I know about you, o-or make announcements about you... O-Or would that be too much? Sometimes I go too far with things...

[But the fact that she's aware of it is also a good sign.]

[Mettaton laughs, touched at Mikan's offer.]

It's quite all right, dear. I am getting there on my own, but in the end, having people like you support me is more than enough.

[It's not an empty platitude like he expected it to be either. A bit to his own surprise he feels a deep warmth and appreciation for the girl in front of him. It's a bit awkward, all things considered, but he continues to smile.]

... If you say so.

[But she's not too disappointed, not having expecting she could do much of anything. She's happy to be there, happy to be with him, happy happy happy.]

... I'm... really going to like this concert.

You better, darling! We've now both put work into making it shine.

[He looks to the streamers she put up and nods approvingly.]

Lovely, just lovely!

[He looks back to her and grins.]

Napstablook doesn't try to creep up on their cousin, but being as quiet as they are, floating through the wall of the theater and up behind him as he's hanging a glittering crystal star from the rafters. They float up right behind him, looking over his shoulder at the piece.

"that's really pretty...." they say without warning.

They don't mean to creep up on him, but instantly Mettaton startles, the back side of a fist punching out behind him in a knee-jerk reaction. He twists on the catwalk he was balanced on and hanging the crystals from to see Napstablook floating behind him, surprised.

"Blooky! Oh darling, I'm so sorry, I didn't see you the-"

In the middle of his words he takes an unaware step, his heel slipping off the side and he flips over the side of the small railing, just catching himself on the edge as he dangles over the side.

"AHHH! AH! OH GOODNESS!"

It's gonna take him a moment to get his wits about him.

The strike has no intent, just reflex, but it still comes as a surprise to the ghost as the first passes through their face.

“oh… oh no it’s fine i should ha-”

Mettaton falls, almost in slow motion. Napstablook shifts fully corporeal and grabs their cousin's hand as if they have a chance of helping the seven-foot-tall robot.

“oh… oh gosh oh gee…. oh my gosh….”

They stammer helplessly, eyes filling with tears.

Napstablook grabs him and Mettaton continues to yell a little, his legs swinging back and forth.

"Oh goodness, oh no, oh gosh!!!"

These two have never sounded more related than this moment and Mettaton continues to panic. It's another moment before he realizes, oh, he's not actually falling and begins to calm down.

"All right... all right this is, I can work with this, all right, here I go..."

It's comforting to feel his cousin right there even if honestly they are kind of useless right now.

The ghost’s eyes start to water.

“oh gosh… i’m so sorry i…. do you….uh…. have a ladder or something…. i’m so sorry….”

They hold his hand as tight as they can, still in panic mode even as Mettaton calms down.

“i’m so sorry… this is my fault….”

They hold onto his hand and it grounds him even more. Mettaton looks back up with determination and begins to pull himself up, quickly clambering over the small railing back onto the platform. It's not a graceful climb in any sense of the word, but he's safe and that's what matters.

"No no Blooky, it's fine, I should make this walkway safer anyway."

He smiles at his cousin, fixing his hair back to perfect.

"It's good to see you, darling!"
