[ Or not a cat? That's... a lot to unpack but he focuses on the important details. ]
Well, by 2012 the cat had given it back. [ He's a brief rundown. ]
The first time I encountered the Tesseract was in 1945, Hydra was using it during World War 2 to make weapons, after that it was dropped in the arctic and Howard Stark fished it out somewhere between then and 1991 I guess. By 2012 Shield was using it to make weapons and it got stolen by an Asgardian named Loki who tried to take over Earth. We- my team, stopped him and it was sent back to Asgard. Fast forward a few years and now Thanos has gotten his hands on it.

[GONNA JUST ASSUME THAT ... Asgard getting destroyed got around in the space between Ragnarok and Infinity War. It seems like it would be big news. Anyway, not the point.]
I've heard a little about Thanos. He's kind of like a boogeyman, but we've never crossed paths directly. Probably because ... the Tesseract basically made me.
[She might have to elaborate on that, or she might not, she's going to see how much Steve knows first.]

It made you?
[ He knows something about an infinity stone giving people their powers...]

[She pauses as she tries to figure out how best to explain it.]
So when I was with the Air Force I was working with this woman named Wendy Lawson who was trying to create a light speed engine. I was just a pilot, but I later learned that Lawson was using the Tesseract to power the engine from afar, and during a flight exercise we were shot down by a race called the Kree. I found out that Lawson was also Kree, but she had defected when she found out she was on the wrong side of a really nasty war.
[One that Carol has spent the last twenty five years trying to right.]
Anyway, Lawson couldn't let the Kree get a hand on her work, so she was in the process of trying to destroy what was left of the engine core when the Kree ship who shot us down showed up and killed her. I tried to buy time before pararescue got there, but that wasn't really working so I finished what she started and blew it up instead.
[A pause as she raises a fist, away from the mansion towards the ocean.]
And when I woke up, I could do this.
[And photon blast away.]

He lets out a low whistle when she shoots a photon blast at the beach. ]
Nice. [ If he was more science minded he might have asked more about what the power actually was, but he’s Steve and he likes to punch things. ]
Can you do anything else? [ Give him a super powered run down. ]

[And by "pretty" she means can fly through a spaceship the hard way and not have it really bother her.]
no subject
You can fly? [ also maybe a little jealous. ] Without a suit?

I was a pilot before I got superpowers, but this is a lot more fun.

I can imagine. My friend Sam uses a jet pack, he would be jealous. [ He half wishes Sam was here just to see his reaction. ]
We should spar sometime. It’s been a while since I haven’t had to pull my punches.
no subject
Same. Most people don't want to get in my way.

The US government experimented on me in the 1940s, I was their first and only super soldier. Super strength, accelerated healing...among other things. I crashed a plane into the arctic in 1945 with the Tesseract and Shield found me in 2011, still alive.

It's been a while since I've run into someone pretty tough. Yeah, sparring sounds like fun.

They have a gym here, apparently another version of me set it up, that's set up specifically for people who can lift cars.
[ Or stop helicopters from taking off by pulling on them really hard. ]
no subject
Nice. I'll have to swing by and check it out.
[That'll definitely be a way to kill some time being stuck here.]
