Summary: Ed's had a bit too much time to think.
The Story:

Now that Ed's gotten fairly settled into a routine in Wonderland and things from the last event have calmed down, Ed's found himself with too much time on his hands to think about things. Some of them are things like worrying about how Alfons was doing back in Germany and how he and Hohenheim took Ed's disappearance.

And then there's his and Al's Mirrors and how disturbingly different they were. Ed still found it hard to believe that a version of his brother would hate him. In some ways, it reminded him painfully of Sloth and the way she hated him. On the third hand, there's Greed and the issues Ed has resulting from him; some of which were tied in to his own version of him.

All of this is why he can be found sitting on a bench at the beach, watching the waves roll in and retreat; occasionally sipping from one of the beers he had a closet produce for him.

Ed shrugs a bit. "Parallel worlds. They're the same as those we know, at least in looks. Personalities are often different. And the looks aren't exact. Alfons is a much lighter shade of blond than you are, and his eyes are blue, for example."

Al nods. "It still seems weird to me, but whatever. Was there anyone else you recognized?"

"Um, Mrs Hughes is my landlady. Although she's not married, so obviously that's not her last name. I've been teasing Hughes' alternate version about him being a wimp about asking her out."

Al laughs at that. "Does she have any idea?"

"Well, it's a little hard to not notice him ducking around a corner when he sees her looking. She's kinda just... waiting for him to actually screw up the courage to say something."

He grins and shakes his head. "From all I've heard of Mister Hughes, I can't imagine him being shy about how he feels about Missus Hughes."

"Well this one is more uptight than ours and is a bit of a stick in the mud. He thinks his interest isn't proper or something. I don't know. He won't tell me busy I'm a busybody kid that needs to mind his own business."

"Maybe it's a culture thing or something?"

"Probably. Things between home and there are a lot different. Like they think a woman's place is at home, producing children and keeping house for her husband, although careers in socially acceptable things like teaching or being secretaries is okay. Provided they aren't married, because see first sentence." Ed takes a moment to pinch the bridge of his nose. "The entire damn world is like that, so far as I can tell."

Al wrinkles his nose. "What? That's stupid, what put that dumb idea in their heads?"

"Religion is what." Ed rolls his eyes. "I spent time getting into trouble before I learned how to keep my mouth shut."

"Oh, boy." Al shakes his head--he can respect that people have their beliefs, but when your dogma start dictating how other people live... "What other crap do they try and enforce?"

"Homosexual relationships are illegal in every country I know of," Ed says, glowering off at the ocean.

"Why would they even care if two guys or girls like each other?!"

"Because they think God doesn't like it. Oh, and what makes it even better? One of the angels here told me that he and the other angels really don't care about if people love someone of the same gender. So it's just bigoted people shoving in their own beliefs on others."

Al buried his face in his hands. "I'm so glad Amestris avoided that idiocy..."

"Yeah." Ed holds and releases a slow breath. "That's why I want to try to bring Alfons home with me. So he can see what things should be like."

Al smiles at Ed. "I'll make sure I can bring him back, too. And Dad, too, if he'll come."

Ed goes quiet for a moment. "He said he wanted to stay there and die the way Mom knew him."

Al frowned a little, looking down at the ground. "...if that's what he wants."

"He's not in good shape. He'll last a few more years, but..." He shrugs helplessly.

Al bit his lip, not looking up yet.

Ed sighed and leaned against Al. "Sorry."

Al leans against his brother with a sigh, closing his eyes. "How is he doing, really? Is he in pain?"

"I'm not sure. He's good at hiding stuff."
