But when she gets there, she looks curiously at the dock, and the boots there. They seem familiar, but she can't quite place who they belong to. They belong to somebody though, and she looks around...but, there doesn't seem to be anyone around. Or at least, no one that Tohru can see.
She waits a minute to see if anyone comes up, but nothing happens. Naturally, she starts to wonder if someone's drowned.]
...Hello? Excuse me? Is...is someone here? Are you o-
[As she's calling out, the waves roll up over her shoes, getting her socks soaking wet, and that's all it takes. Her legs feel strange and she is immediately unsteady. She flails, trying really hard not to fall, but she pitches forward anyway and lands in the water with a rough splash. She pushes herself up on her palms and gasps for air (she's never really been the best swimmer). Unfortunately she still can't seem to get up, so she flips herself over instead and...
...and there's a pink fin where her legs should be. She's shocked, but she takes a second to test it carefully, lifting her new tail fin up and down. There's something amazing about it, even if she would much rather have her legs.
It's when she reaches out to touch them that she realizes her shirt is gone though, and that she only has a standard (though very pink) mermaid top on. And that is what makes her shriek loudly, scoot backwards, and seek deeper water. That way, no one will be able to see that she's not fully dressed anymore and she can try to just hide in her embarrassment (even though she's made as much noise as someone could possibly make while turning into a fish).]

Oh, right. Wonderland.
For once, though, Daryl's actually enjoying himself; mild body horror aside, he's faster, stronger, better equipped for one of his favourite pastimes, and after the sorts of events they've been having he's gotta say that this definitely qualifies as, if not a legitimate vacation, pretty damn close to a break. And he's okay with that.
Today he's been busying himself with trying to fashion nets with small enough holes to capture those tiny, brightly coloured fish that keep swimming by him. Not to eat them, of course, they're too small... But just to see if he can. It's been passing the time, anyway, and he's content.
As fate would have it, he's content in Tohru's general vicinity, having just chased a school back toward the beach. It wasn't his intention and he doesn't realize how close he's strayed until he hears the splashing and the yelping, but naturally once he does he can't help moving closer to make sure it's just your standard fish-legs transformation and nothing more.
Yeah. The fish leg thing is officially normal. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
It takes him all of thirty seconds to glide through the water and even less time than that for him to spot a flash of pink up ahead. Drifting closer, he lets his head emerge from under the waves as he calls out to the bobbing figure.]
Hey! You alright over there?
[He's got a spear in one hand and a net in the other, but aside from that he's looking a bit less aggravated than usual. This level of freedom is doing him good and besides, it's hard to look menacing when you're sporting a slightly shimmery greenish-brown tail...
It swishes behind him, propelling him closer as he squints to get a better look at who's just joined him in the fishpeople club.]

She's startled when someone calls out to her, and instinctively crosses her arms in front of her when she turns (even though no one can see anything with her in the water).]
I-I! I'm okay! I-I just, I...I don't know what happened to my...feet...o-or my shirt...
[Wow, that all sounds really silly now that it's out of her mouth. She looks down, embarrassed. But then, it sinks in just who was asking, and she lift her head up again.]
...Daryl?
[Ah! Those must have been his boots on the dock then! That's really good - it would have been awful if someone really had drowned out here.]
no subject
He stays a few feet away, too, because he also hadn't missed the way she'd crossed her arms over her chest... And he gets it. He don't like that shit neither.]
Yeah, it's me-- And that's what happens when you get wet, the damn fin...
[Bobbing up and down with the gentle waves, though, Daryl doesn't look particularly bothered by it. Actually, he's looking pretty relaxed... For him, anyway.]
Ain't all that bad. Don't got a catch, far's I can tell. ...You can keep breathin' if you go under.
[He adds that last part on there, and though he's been at this for at least a day, there's a definite (if a bit subdued) note of fascination in his voice.
Of all the weird shit this place's thrown at them... This one's actually pretty okay.]
no subject
[She remembers it all happening pretty quickly, and that only added to her panic. But, she does seem a little calmer now that Daryl's explained things. That last bit makes her eyes go huge though, because it sounds so impossible.]
Really? We can do that?
[She looks down at the water curiously, and a bit nervously. Then, after one last slightly wary look at Daryl, she takes a deep breath (just in case) and sinks herself underwater.
And she stays there about fifteen seconds before she pops right back up, looking absolutely amazed.]
Y-You were right! I did it! I-I can actually breathe underwater like a fish! This is absolutely incredible!
[It might legitimately be the most impressed she's been by an event so far. She's starry-eyed and in awe over it.]
no subject
[And then he waits for her to try it out for herself, because there's no way anybody could not wanna test that out.
There may be the tiniest flicker of a smile on Daryl's face when she resurfaces, too, because yeah. It's pretty cool.]
You can swim like one too, real fast... Just takes some gettin' used to- [And without giving any more warning than that he ducks under the waves, torpedoes past Tohru before reappearing behind her and brushing his hair back from his face when he surfaces. SO SPEEDY.] C'mon--
[Yeah, he's totally waving her over, further away from the beach. It's where all of the interesting things are, after all.]
no subject
Ah-! Okay!
[She's just a little nervous at first. It wasn't that she couldn't swim - she just wasn't a very strong swimmer. At the beach, she would try and hold her breath for too long and end up gasping for air against the rocks. She trusts Daryl though, and so she ducks under the water and follows.
It's such a surprise how naturally it feels to swim and breathe underwater - though, she supposes it makes as much sense as it can. She has a fin now, and it's a lot better for swimming than her legs ever were. This time, she opens her eyes underwater and gasps at the sights around them. Sunken ships, other fish, all sorts of things!]
I-
[She's startled, for a second, that she's able to talk underwater. But it all feels so natural right now. She lowers her voice though, afraid of scaring away wildlife.]
...I never knew there was so much down here!
no subject
It seems to work out well enough, no different from talking up there.]
Don't think it's here all the time. I been out here before and didn't see nothin' like this.
[He'd made an attempt at exploring when the Mansion'd turned them all into walking suits of armor... Not that it'd been particularly fruitful.]
S'posed to be somethin' else down here but it don't look like it's real friendly.
no subject
[There's so much though! It looks ancient and full of history, and it seems strange to her that it would only be here temporarily. Though, oddly, she looks relieved.]
Ah, that's good though, if it's true. If it's just a decoration for the event, then that means ships didn't actually crash here!
[And therefore, no one drowned, probably! Tohru may have been legitimately concerned about that. But she shifts that concern in a different direction when Daryl speaks again.]
Something else? ...What do you mean?
no subject
It doesn't.]
And that thing we got for the new people, the pamphlet-- it says somethin' about gettin' dragged under if you go too far out... I'm thinkin' somethin' lives in here.
[Dun dun duuuuun...]
no subject
[It's a strange thought, now that she's thinking about it. The mansion is right by the ocean. Shouldn't ships pass by now and then?
She doesn't have a chance to really dwell on it though, because then Daryl brings up something terrifying.]
D-Dragged under?! You mean like a shark or a sea monster or something like that? How far is too far?
[Suddenly she's not so sure she feels safe out here.]
no subject
Further than I been, and I been out pretty far. Miles. Ain't nothin' over here but the fish.
[And as if to prove his point, a glittering, pastel-coloured school breezes by, paying no mind whatsoever to the mer-people hanging in the water just feet away.]
You're good.
[WOULD THIS FACE LIE TO YOU, TOHRU?]
Made camp in one of them ships, it's safe there... And your legs'll go back to normal if you let 'em dry off.
[Yes, he's aware of that. ...And no, he's not done down here just yet.]
no subject
That's a relief! I'm really glad it's safe here.
[The news about how to become human again is surprising though, and she looks down at her tail fin curiously.]
Really? ...That's kind of nice, I think. We're usually not able to pick and choose how long we're affected by events, so being able to decide when to turn back to normal feels kind of like a luxury!
[She doesn't seem to be in as much of a hurry to get back on land now though, and doesn't judge Daryl for wanting to stay this way for a little while. It really is amazing, and they might never have a chance like this again! So, it might be nice to just enjoy it for a little while.]
You made camp in a ship? ...Um, if. If it's not too much of an imposition...could I see it, maybe?
[Now that she knows the ships are just decoration, she's a little more curious about them anyway.]
