Summary: The beauty pageant.
The Story: Whether you're there as a voluntary or involuntary contestant or as an audience member there to support a friend, this is where threads for the beauty pageant go!

There will be three top-level threads to help keep things organized: one for the sign-up sheet (which characters will have access to all week); one for Tweedledee to ask questions of the contestants on stage; and a third for the audience. Give me a couple minutes to post them and then have at! Please make sure to label threads open or closed. ♥

+ Sign-up Sheet +

The sign-up sheet for the beauty pageant is posted on Saturday on the first floor bulletin board of the main school building. Students may sign themselves up or sign up their friends (with or without their knowledge!). Unfortunately for the latter group, there are no take-backs on sign-ups.

When James is relatively certain he won't be seen, he sneaks over to add a particular name on the list:

His handwriting is pretty distinct and formal, but even if it wasn't Lily would probably have her (very correct) suspicions about just what troublemaker decided to stick her on the list.

Of course, the first name Finnick ever signs against a sheet pinned to the bulletin board belongs to the girl who sets everything she touches alight with her fiery temper and her grouchy attitude. Finnick grins as he writes her name, knowing he's going to either wind up dead the moment she finds out he was the one who insisted on putting her through hell or regretting ever putting her through the ring — though, the latter is impossible, especially if it brings a smile to her face.

+ On Stage +

The decorations are simple and tasteful: a banner across the stage that reads Yasogami High School Beauty Pageant with a few gold stars printed on either end. Tweedledee waits on stage, still dressed in her pencil skirt and blouse, her hair pulled up in a neat bun. She's got the mic in one hand and a smile on her face, ready to introduce the contestants and ask each of them a few questions as they file out on stage. She's also ready to comment on their outfits and ask a few more questions once they've changed into their swimsuits and come back out.

It really, really doesn't matter to Lily how tasteful it all is. She's still furious with James for signing her up without her knowledge, made worse by the fact that he'd gone ahead and told her he did it without asking because he knew she'd say no. Regardless, she puts on her best face as she files out onto the stage with the other contestants, wearing a demure red dress with her hair left down and curling over her shoulders, offering the MC a bright and well-practiced smile as she takes her place.

If she has to do this, she's going to do it right.

Tweedledee announces Lily's name and comes to stand next to her, gesturing with one hand for her to step forward from the line of contestants.

"Miss Evans certainly looks like she belongs on stage, doesn't she?" Tweedledee smiles at the audience and then turns to address Lily. "Tell us, Miss Evans, why did you choose red for your dress? Is it your favorite color? Or perhaps it has some underlying meaning?"

Probably not, but stupid questions are an important part of beauty pageants.

Lily steps forward as directed, and makes a very concentrated effort not to blush. Brave and clever as she may be, public speaking is not her strong point, nor is it something she has a great deal of experience with -- the play had been different. It was one thing to play a character, but another entirely to have people focusing on you as a person.

She pauses.

Really? That's a question?

"It's my favorite." A stupid question gets a stupidly simple answer. "And someone else's, as well."

Though James doesn't deserve for her to admit she picked a dress based partly on what he likes. Not when he did this to her.

"Someone important to you?" Tweedledee smiles knowingly. "Could that be the person responsible for your participation?"

As irate as she may be with James at this moment in time, Lily has the good sense to play it off with a smile, and somehow manages to keep herself from speaking of him in the past-tense. He'd survived this far. They'd probably be back to rights as soon as this was over.

"Perhaps," Lily answers instead, playing coy, if only for a moment. "Though it may be more than he deserves at the moment."

Tweedledee tilts her head, her smile a bit more conciliatory, just for a second, as though she can empathize with Lily's act right now.

"I'm sure he'll be appropriately compensated when the time comes. Besides, you'll certainly give the other girls some harsh competition."

She's partial to the color red, okay?

"To conclude, Miss Evans, tell the audience three interesting things about yourself."

"Oh-- thank you."

Something about that response gives Lily occasion to smile, a real and genuine smile that proves she's being won over -- finally letting herself be amused by the situation rather than simply put-upon. The question, she supposes, is standard for most beauty pageants. Not that she's been to many, but she has a general idea of how they go.

Three interesting things. Well.

"Let's see. I have one of the highest grade averages in my class, I've often considered becoming a--" No, healer wasn't the right word here, was it? "doctor, but lately I've also discovered a passion for directing."

Her classmates may not agree with her pursuing that last one, given what she put most of them through during preparations for the play.

"Quite different career paths." Tweedledee cups her elbow with her free hand, still holding the mic up. "You'll succeed at either, no doubt, if your grade average is as good as you say."

She gestures Lily to return to her place in line, smiling at her.

+ The Audience +

Any students not participating in the pageant are welcome to mill around the auditorium floor. There are folding chairs set around the outer perimeter of the large room, but for the most part students are expected to stand for the duration of the pageant. At the back of the room, near the exits, are several tables with slips of paper, pencils, and ballot boxes; please only vote for one contestant!
