Who: Mirror!Pepper Potts/Real!Neal Cassidy/Real!Pepper Potts plus YOU
Where: Anywhere!
When: 9/16 on
Rating: PG/PG-13? Will change if it goes higher.
Summary: One fake goes looking for the sword, while one real tries to protect what he holds dear.
The Story: [She's there on a mission, and nothing would make Pepper happier than to win points with both Steve and the Queen by finding the sword. So she moves about the mansion, running into people her other self knows, often seeking out the ones she holds most dear to try and worm whatever they might have discovered out. This Pepper is excellent at playing her part, dressed just as professionally as her other would be, putting forth a manner that's polite and professional. She does her best to leave no cracks in the facade, but not every mask can be perfect.
She hardly minds being found out, however. If it comes to it, she can hold her own. Unlike the version they know so well, she's embraced what she's become. It's a simple matter of control, and her fire burns as she wills it to. Maybe she'll even show a select few, without bothering to play nice first.]
--
[Neal really doesn't know what the hell is going on; there's all this talk of riddles and swords, but that sort of thing has never been his forte. He's a survivor, and now also a protector. Emma's been taken to the other side, but Henry is still there, along with his other friends. He's not going to let them get hurt in the chaos, and that's his priority above all. Maybe he can be pulled into the hunt for the sword if someone points out the logic, but first comes protecting his son and his family.]
--
[Pepper hardly knows where to begin when she finds herself on the wrong side of the mirrors. She's heard about it happening although with talk of what the other side is like, but this is her first time experiencing it. She knows she's in a dangerous position, and the worst part of that is having no idea who she can trust, who's been brought to this strange world with her and who remains from this world, where they've literally been created.
Or perhaps it's the second worst, as Pepper also has her first real opportunity to see what their opposites are like, and imagine her own. Do people know her well enough to know the different, to not let that other near--especially if she has the same power as Pepper, the same volatile and unstable compound pumping in her veins?
But she can't worry about it too much; it takes away focus from this chance to explore this side of the world. There's information here that could help Tony and the rest of them possibly find their way out, and Pepper means to gather whatever she can to assist that effort. So as dangerous as it is, she doesn't find a place to hide or cower. She wanders around, moving carefully, but perhaps braver than she might have before her trip back home. As much as she doesn't want it, she has a weapon now--she is a weapon, and that might be enough to get her through this.]

Mirror!Pepper
Pepper's one of the ones on her list to find and she's currently hunting through some of her familiar haunts in search of her. ]
Re: Mirror!Pepper
And there are some it would be truly an accomplishment to fool. Pepper is on her way down to the lab to test one, when she runs into another. Natasha Romanoff, and it's Pepper's advantage because she knows Natalia hasn't crossed.]
Natasha? [She stops, acting far more wary than she feels. Of course she knows, but her other wouldn't, and that one is a little mouse afraid of what lurks around corners.]
no subject
[ Natasha casts the other woman a friendly smile as she approaches green gaze alert and intent. ]
I was just looking for you. Have you seen Tony?
[ A mild enough start to the conversation. ]
no subject
Not yet. I was just headed down to see him. [There's a pause, and then she goes on as if she's just realized she's made a mistake.] He's expecting me.
[No he isn't. But whether or not Natasha sees it for the lie it is, it's the move someone would make if they wanted to deter an attack. Being expected means she would be missed if she didn't show up. Pepper doesn't give her other much credit, but certainly she's clever enough to come up with that excuse at the very least.]
no subject
Oh good. I'll walk you down. This place has gotten unexpectedly chaotic today.
no subject
She lets out a slow breath, shaking her head. Natasha won't give up so easily, not if she's clever. So Pepper pushes the issue.]
I know what you're trying to do but--how do I know you're you, and not some copy?
no subject
no subject
You don't know that. We don't know what they're like. [Certainly her other half lacks any idea, although perhaps she's found a spot from which to watch from the other side. Wouldn't that be an education for her?]
no subject
[ Because wasn't that the point? ]
Still, that leaves us at quite the impasse.
no subject
What about the code to get into the lab? [Because that they exist is well known, but the real Tony Stark had designed his security well. Their team doesn't know it, but Natasha would.] If you enter it, won't that prove who you are?
[And if Pepper angles herself correctly, she might get another valuable piece of information.]
no subject
That sounds like a good test. [ There's no mirrors down there, not near the door - Tony had been very careful about his security, and as far as tests went, it would make a really good one. ] Once we've both passed, I'd be happy to let you in on what I know.

There's a bit of a surprise when they arrive, however: it seems that for once Tony Stark isn't where he's supposed to be. The lab stands empty, making this all the more perfect of an opportunity provided she can get past the other woman.] Alright. We're here. [Of course, the difficulty then is angling herself just right without Natasha compensating, and Pepper takes a few steps to the side, carefully keeping her eyes on the other woman.]
no subject
[ No need to make this easy on the other woman, and the keypad is silent, no tones to give away the code Natasha intends to punch in. She waits on Pepper to turn with a polite smile, perfectly patient to wait until she complies. ]
no subject
There's really no way to win this scenario, not as it's laid out. So Pepper leans against the glass, a smile spreading across her face as she drops the facade.]
You really are thorough, aren't you? You and Natalia have more in common than you think opposites would.
no subject
[ Natasha gives her answer with an arch of one eyebrow, crossing her arms over her chest to regard the other woman. Especially with that confirmation now and perhaps that had been a little too easy, but it got her her answer all the same. ]
Why are you here, Pepper?
no subject
But Natasha has yet to really see that. She asks the predictable question, and earns a short laugh for it.] Why? For the same reason we're all here: to find the sword.
Although I do like to be productive. [She taps a finger against the glass she leans on, still watching Natasha as she makes the absent gesture.] And it would be such a shame not to visit the famous Stark lab. I am a little disappointed he's not here, though. It would've been fun to see just how long he couldn't tell I wasn't actually the love of his life. I assume you're going to tell him and spoil it for me.
[But the woman wouldn't be nearly so impressive if she didn't. Pepper shrugs a shoulder; it had been a diversion anyway, not worth truly getting upset over. Instead she plays another game, meaning to have Natasha drop her guard just a touch. One innocent, incorrect assumption may be what Pepper needs to regain control of this situation.] You could make it up to me though--let me in that lab? I'd only be in there for a few minutes, and I'm sure I wouldn't take anything that would be missed.
no subject
Nice try, but after the day I've been having, I'm not feeling all that acommodating. I'd say sorry, but...
[ She's really not. And she doesn't feel like even lying about it. ]
no subject
You're smart enough to see where this is leading, aren't you? I want in, you don't want to let me, and you obviously can't leave me on my own down here, but I won't leave. [It's all inevitable, and she turns her eyes back towards Natasha.] Not that I can't use the exercise, but it would be quicker if you just punched in the code.
[So just how badly will she be underestimated, due to her other self's frailty? Pepper doesn't yet know, but she also doesn't play her ace yet. She's curious if Natasha will make the first move, or take a defensive position against Pepper.]
no subject
[ Which was the truth, not that Natasha anticipated it being that easy. And while she didn't initiate the attack, she's on alert and watchful, ready for any motion from Pepper declares threat. She tries not to underestimate anyone. ]
no subject
But you are right in that you really don't want to fight me. [Has she ever seen Extremis in action before? If so, Natasha might recognize the light that comes into Pepper's eyes, the deep orange that glows under her skin. She reaches for her neck first, the movement quick and with force behind it. Pepper doesn't expect to succeed with such a forthright blow, but that's hardly the point. Even touching her will do Natasha harm, and the woman should learn that lesson quickly.]
no subject
She hasn't seen Pepper's Extremis abilities in action yet, but she knows what the woman can be capable of - in theory. And when she lights up, Natasha takes a cautious step back, just enough that she has enough room to move when the woman lunges for her.
She knows better than to try and block in any normal way - if she's glowing, she's already hot enough that this isn't going to be even a semblance of a normal fight. So instead she drops her upper body in an abrupt movement to give herself the momentum she needs, bringing a leg up and kicking aside the blow with a boot. Her tac suit will give her some protection, but still not enough to make this a long fight. ]
You're not getting in, Pepper. I suggest you take your search elsewhere.
