Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
Who: Darcy Lewis (
sorryitasedyou) and John Blake (
oversight)
Where: Darcy's Room
When: Immediately following this conversation.
Rating: PG-13
Summary: After intercepting a message from Darcy in response to demon!Dean Winchester's post to the network, John decides to offer his $0.02.
The Story:
[ Having just finished a short conversation with Darcy, John takes it upon himself to seek her out. He doesn't like the idea of Dean roaming, especially not of the idea that he might run into the demon on his way across the mansion, but as it stands (and probably how it'll always will stand), Darcy's well worth the risk.
Arriving at her door, he adjusts the sling on his left arm and then knocks with his right. In two weeks the head wound's healed, but it's going to take a hell of a lot longer for his shoulder to heal, otherwise he'd be out there tracking Dean down at this very moment, probably with a group of at least a dozen others, all victimized by Winchester himself. ]
Darcy, it's Blake.
[ He might as well announce himself since he can't imagine she's not jumpy by now. ]

It doesn't help enough, though.
Having all but jumped off the couch when he dropped the bomb, she'd been pacing as she waited. Things had been busy lately - with the whole weird house thing and her focus on the coffee shop, murders often passed by her. Upside and downside of not being in the crime-fighting circle directly. Maybe she should put an ear to the ground more often, though. She had no intention of taking up Dean's offer to her and the rest of the female population in Wonderland - not when she hadn't done the horizontal tango in 4 years and the idea of just being a notch on a belt wasn't appealing. She may have her own bag of problems, but she knew she was worth more than that.
Pulling open the door, she's quick to usher him in knowing Dean's room is only a few doors down. Something that had been relatively convenient previously, but now? Not so much.
She waits until he's totally in before closing and locking the door behind him. There's a moment or 5 spared to take in his appearance, words escaping with her breath.]
Holy shit.

Quick to follow her lead, John only glances back briefly to make sure the door's secure. Call him paranoid, but after the last run-in with Winchester, he's not exactly looking for a quick repeat performance.
Blake gestures, even uses that immobilized arm a bit. ]
Hey, it's okay. [ For now, at least. ] We're okay. [ For now, at least. Sort of. ] But— there's some things I can do to help. Just in case.
[ It's sort of jumping the gun, but John's not interesting in lingering too long on some of the less-important details. ]

[She can only focus on one thing at a time right now, and the sling is earning most of that attention. There's a lot to take in, sorry if she has some trouble focusing... AKA protecting herself from him first and foremost.]
I need to tell Jane. She spends a lot of time in the basement and with Bruce gone, I -
[Worry more about her. Honestly, she worries more about quite a few people than just Jane - but now wasn't really the time to get into the nitty gritty details of it.]

One thing at a time, okay? Lemme give you some stuff to help out.
[ Which is why he's pulling out chalk and digging around for an image in his phone. ]
You decent at drawin'? You can draw a trap on Jane's floor — any floor — that oughta help.
no subject
[A beat.]
Although I don't know why he would. Not all that exciting in my room.
[Seriously, right now her focus is entirely on the more public places, sorry John.]

[ It's not said unkindly, but Blake's somewhat baffled that Darcy's missed the handful of recent announcements about traps and holy water and stay the fuck out of the way because he'll kill you. It's probably the biggest thing to shake up Wonderland since the Jabberwocky. ]
He killed Crowley.
[ Blake starts looking around the room, half snooping for the closet so he can fix this himself. Not that he'll get that far, but he's really thinking about painting on her floor right now. ]
He can kill 'bout anyone he wants. Think he only spared me 'cause he knew it'd drive me nuts bein'— [ He lifts his mostly immobilized arm. ] —bein' outta commission.

[She’d made an active choice to focus on helping her friends through the loss and keeping the coffee shop in one piece - find ways to make it a little more self-sustaining since this place’s curve balls seemed to keep her away from it for a whole week at a crack.
Those three words, though, cause her to still. She knew Crowley was a demon, had chatted with him at the bonfire. He’d seemed surprisingly nice, like someone she could befriend… And he’d been killed by Dean.
Shit.]
I’m sorry. Holy-
[This is a lot of info to try and take in… A hand moves to cover her mouth as she moves a few steps as the weight of it all sinks in. Her response is almost automatic, having spent 3 years back home and about a year here putting Jane’s needs before her own. Her focus has to be on her boss before herself.]
Show me what I need to draw so I can hit up the lab and fill it with these things. Throw some in the coffee shop, maybe the other’s rooms…
[Then her room. Right? With the others safe and Dean’s room only being a few doors down, it’d be stupid for him to come back to the 7th floor, right?]

Without saying much more, he nods and searches in his sling for a piece of paper. Yes, he's already taken to storing things there, but when you're done an arm, extra "pockets" come in handy. ]
It— Here, it looks like this. You can keep that. You gotta— Make sure you're careful 'bout drawin' it right, okay? It's gotta be accurate. If you— If you think you might need help, I can send Crowley by...
[ He just wants to do what's right here. Hell, at this point he's desperate to help, to show he's doing all he can. In a moment of vulnerability, he reaches out and pulls her into a one-armed hug. ]
Just stay safe, okay? Whatever you gotta do.

Rather than say anything, she just silently watches - trying to memorize the design. It seems simple enough to manage but then again sometimes the simplest things can be the easiest to screw up. The name rings a bell, remembering him from the bonfire. Pieces start to fall into place - more things making sense on how everything’s connected. One day, if she’s bored, she might just actually make a Wonderland flow chart of how people know each other and who’s killed who - y’know the basics.
It’s easy enough to settle into the one-armed hug - the movement familiar from when Bucky had been injured before he got sent home and changed.]
I’ll let you know about help if I need it. [Something she’s at least gonna be genuine about where this is concerned. Set her stubbornness aside, or at least try to.] It’s just trippy with his stupid list and the fact that he still looks and sounds the same.

[ Blake should have come to grow used to these types of occurrences, but as it stands, when it's someone that means something, things get decidedly more complicated. ]
Don't wanna keep you from doin' what you gotta do, but if you need me to stay, I will.
[ He'll fight Dean to the death if need be, because Darcy holds such a large portion of his heart by default, all thanks to Wonderland. ]
no subject
[Dear god, she shouldn't ask this. Shouldn't get into the habit of having to ask this when shit started hitting the fan. First Bucky, then Natasha, then Steve, and now Blake? The pattern was becoming transparent and she wasn't sure if she was a fan.
The rest of her request dies off with a soft sigh, eyes closing for a moment. It was just unnerving with Dean's door being across the hall and down two rooms. If only she'd thought to ask him to stay over two nights from now.]
I wouldn't want to keep you tied up for the rest of the night if you have other plans.
[Her way of saying yes without actually saying the words.]
no subject
[ Which, in reality, is what it's going to take to make him feel better, in all honesty. But he's not about to leave Darcy to fend for herself, even if she's pretty damn tough and not known for being an easy target. ]
Can help you do whatever. Anything. Whatever I gotta.
[ John takes a deep breath. ]
no subject
[And it is, really. Granted the only time she really ever asked people stay over was in times of danger... Why break the trend now? Of course, Dean would break that streak, but she didn't know that yet.]
Just stay. Keep me company in case he thinks about dropping by tonight. [Since she probably won't be sleeping... At least not in here alone.]
no subject
[ Not to say he's all that entertaining under most circumstances, but then again, Darcy knows him well enough to see through all of that anyway. She really does bring out the best in him more than most people. ]
no subject
[She gives a little laugh, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.]
The room next to me is still open, we could make a little theatre. Have our movie night?
[And it'd be someplace that isn't her room in case Dean did decide to stop by, give them enough time to peace out before he could do any serious damage.] I'm sure the closet has something ball-related to offer.
[A gentle attempt at humor.]

[ Honestly, any distraction they can maintain between then two of them is a good distraction at this point. It'll keep them both from being jumpy as hell. ]
