Summary: the unlikeliest team up happens for mission’s sake
The Story:
[ he’d been forced to return early, without all the dropped supplies, when cas had gotten hurt. with his friend alright again though, and out of harm’s way, dean is left with the simple task of re-entering the nearby forest in search of the supplies he hadn’t been able to gather and take with him earlier. should be easy enough, he thinks, even if his earlier run had turned messy at best.
this time he’ll go alone, after all, and avoid anymore mistakes that might land others in danger.
gathering the few spare rounds he has, dean stuffs his trusty gun into the back of his jeans, then starts heading over to the entry gates of the town. if he’s quick and ruthless about it, he can get this done in no time at all. hell, there’s a part of him which thinks fuck it, let the supplies be but then, you never know what they might hold inside.
he has to go.
signalling the guards on duty to open up the gates, dean waits around, preparing to once more face the outside world. ]
Better be a smooth ride…

[ John appears out of nowhere, alert and looking quite tense. He's already heard about how things had gone earlier, and now that he realizes there are still supplies missing from the drop, he's not about to let Dean risk going out there on his own (because he knows that's what's going to happen).
More than that, he tells himself that he's doing this because they need supplies, but in reality, he can't hold a grudge for too long, and not even Dean deserves to die alone should it come to that. ]
Let's go before anyone else tries to tag along.
[ He dips his head and powers past Winchester, obviously allowing there to be no argument on this matter. ]

[ there are a lot of things wrong with this scene. for one, it's blake who decides to tag along with him, blake whom he'd seriously hurt not too long ago as a demon and who had then later told dean he wanted nothing to do with him. dean has done his best to respect that wish, which is why he could have sworn any buddy-bud time for supplies would be out of question.
but apparently not.
dean blinks after the other man for almost a full minute before springing into action himself, picking up his speed just enough to catch up with john some ways down the road. ]
Uh, in this case anyone else includes you too, y'know.
[ but he doesn't look like he's about to physically stop him. ]
no subject
Then I'll see you back here later.
[ Which translates to the stubborn former cop going to look for himself, entirely independent of Winchester. Maybe not the best idea, but he's already been out beyond the walls by himself and he's manages to handle most of the zombies he's encountered without actually destroying them.
He tosses up his hands and backs away from Dean, already heading in the direction of the drop site. ]

Hey! [ well isn't someone in a mood today, but then dean can hardly remember a time when john hasn't been prickly towards him. it seems like years ago that they'd managed a decent conversation. dean's fault though, he knows. picking up his pace again, dean falls into step by blake... ]
What's got you all determined to go out there, anyway? Not like you'll find much unless it's somethin' specific.
[ his goal is the drop site, but that mission hadn't originally included blake, so maybe there's something more. or the few walls that contain abel town are starting to drive john nuts. dean could understand that. ]
...Or did you and Crowley have a fight? 'Cause you know no matter what, if you get hurt out here on my watch, he'll still skin me alive.
no subject
[ It's said with a particular tone that suggests there's no other answer to be considered. ]
And he's certainly not my keeper.
[ Although, arguably, Blake sometimes considers himself Crowley's keeper; after years of defending the demon's arguably decent record while in Wonderland, he can't help but be a little defensive. But otherwise, lines are drawn and fairly clearly delineated, because no one, not even Crowley, has ever been able to control John Blake. ]
Your mission's half-fucked, right? Well, I'm pretty good at unfuckin' things, so here I am. To help.
no subject
Alright, alright. Professional help has arrived, my mission is rescued.
[ so maybe his attitude isn't entirely in check, but at least they're making progress. ]
How armed are you? Last time they surprised us with numbers.
[ and last time ended with cas hurt and dean almost blowing a fuse over it. ]
no subject
[ Neither of them are shy of attitude at this point, but the fact that they're working toward the same goal is an impressive change from the last several months. Of course, Blake could make an argument for trying to be the bigger man, but even now, he can't seem to get past their latest hurdle enough to spare a couple ounces of forgiveness.. ]
We go fast, we go quiet. If shit goes south, we split an' run. No guns needed.
Strategic, silent retreat.
[ It's the best chance they have from Blake's perspective. They're both fit enough to make it work, and avoiding gunfire means they won't attract more zombies in the process. ]
no subject
And if you end up in trouble out there once we split? What then, I come back here and tell Crowley I went running the other way?
[ he knows logically it's a fairly good plan b in case too many zombies show up, but dean could never really run and leave someone to their on defenses in a world like this. might as well say as much right now, so blake knows. ]
Yeah, not gonna happen. Better think of something else.
[ gonna fight you on everything, man. but only because he doesn't want to deal with an angry or upset crowley after, or have blake's blood on his hands. not again. ]
no subject
Why's Crowley's name every other word outta your mouth? You know I'm my own person, right? That he doesn't control me, or keep locked away in a tower, or whatever it is your convinced he does?
[ Well, at least he's willing to talk, even if he's tossing out accusations and hovering just beyond antagonistic. ]
Or is this just 'bout you two and your failing BFF status?
no subject
but, even with all that, it's the second bit that has dean raising a brow and then smirking. ]
What're you, jealous? Feelin' excluded from the best friends bracelet club?
[ excuse him while he snickers at his own words. ]
Never thought I'd see the day.
no subject
If I had it in me, it woulda come out before now.
[ He shakes his head and picks through some foliage. ]
Do we really gotta talk? Pretty sure that's just gonna get us in trouble one way or another.
no subject
[ please blake, when has dean ever managed to stay quiet? and they're still relatively close to town, so things should yet remain quiet... but then, that's what he'd thought with cas, too, and look how that ended up.
and speaking of his trip with cas, a few bodies lie just some ways from where he and john walk, zombies previously dropped by cas and himself. that had been easy, until later...
the sight sobers dean up some. ]
I hope this all blows over soon. Never wanted to be a part of some zombie flick.
no subject
Considerin' how sick the Core looked, I wouldn't be placin' too many bets that this'll tie up nice an' neat.
[ Mr. Sunshine, isn't he? ]
Get the feelin' we're buildin' back up to something, but when aren't we?
no subject
[ whatever is coming will be big and ugly. but then, dean's fairly used to that, and after the whole demon fiasco he feels like anything would be better than a repeat of that... ]
Whatever it is, we'll just have to kick it in the ass. Maybe make it permanent for once.
[ or try to. it does all seem a little endless and helpless when it comes to wonderland and beating the system. dean sucks in a breath, about to say something more before he visibly tenses. something-- someone is cracking twigs under their feet, a sound clear in the otherwise quiet forest.
looks like they've got company. ]
no subject
He doesn't expect to engage — that would only draw attention — so he's hoping that Dean is on the same wavelength after their previous conversation. ]
no subject
except the heavy, raspy breathing of a zombie is still audible, and as they both should know, the undead rarely travel alone. ]
If nothing else, we take 'em out quiet...
[ his voice is hushed, but in case push comes to shove, no guns. ]
no subject
Can't say I like this very much.
[ Any of it, but this particular scenario especially. Dean feels the same, he's sure, but it doesn't hurt to show they're on the same page when it comes to being out in the middle of a goddamn zombie hoard.
He gestures past the other man and points of the shuffling silhouette of a distant group of lurking bodies. It seems they've got more than a few groups here to worry about. And likely a ways to go. ]
no subject
but braving bad ideas for supplies was the name of the game when you lived through the end of the world. ]
Really 'cause I kinda figured this as a nice stroll.
[ the word are huffed under his breath, though amusement clings to each one. even if the situation is dire.
their next herd of zombies isn't missed either, making getting the hell out of there even harder... but for now all they can do is try to move quietly but swiftly, and hopefully find a crack to slip through that won't lead to more and more zombies. ]
There.
[ he really just picks the one direction that looks a little calmer. ]
no subject
Sliding through some branches, he stops and holds one that's bound to snap back on Dean. They might actually make it through this if they can continue to cooperate.
Nearing another clearing, John catches sight of a pair of zombies, both of which seem more alert than the rest. Reaching down, he grabs up a small rock and tosses it well in the opposite direction they're looking to do. The rock skitters through the underbrush and the zombies begin shuffling that direction.
Now's their chance. John begins moving, but as he does, he fails to notice one of the offending undead has turned back and will be perfectly in line to see them if they do reveal themselves. ]
