*rocky theme plays faintly in the distance* [open]
Who: Jowan and YOU
Where: Outside on the castle's grounds
When: Various times in the day throughout the next week
Rating: Entirely tame
Summary: Jowan is getting his training montage on. Or trying to anyway.
The Story:
Magic practise
Now that it seems everything's quietened down again, Jowan has to come face to face with the fact that he has been sort of... avoiding something. Namely trying to practise his magic more. A part of it is because of how disastrously it went the first time he tried in his room, but Cullen had a point that he'd likely do better to keep that particular practise outside, and so he starts trying to get himself outside more to do exactly that.
It doesn't help much that he still finds himself preferring staying within the castle walls more often than not. He's spent the majority of his life within the Circle's walls, and his brief period of freedom had only led to problems, namely being captured and ending up in the middle of a rather terrible plan to try and return to the life he'd known. He knows it's different now, Wonderland is both safer from some things and more dangerous in other ways, but he still blinks and looks about uncertainly as he ventures outside more, half expecting templars to manifest out of thin air and herd him back inside.
But the initial concern always fades and Jowan moves on to find a clear patch of ground behind the stables that hopefully won't end up too scorched or otherwise damaged as he sits down and tries to focus his magic as he'd learned in the Circle, sometimes working on controlling small puffs of flame or ice. Other times he focuses on the more difficult (for him anyway) creation magic, his brow scrunching up in concentration as he gets frustrated and tries to force the magic to do what he wants.
That... usually doesn't end too well, though at least the occasional bursts of uncontrolled power aren't likely to do more than attract attention.
Exercise is hard ok
It occurs to Jowan that he might also have to, well, learn more about how to fight without magic as well. It's a strange thought, since while the Circle had been willing to train him in how to use his magic they hadn't really wanted apprentice mages knowing that much on how to use it in combat as much or how to really fight well with a staff. Probably in case they had wanted to use it against the templars that kept an eye on them, he imagines.
But in Wonderland Jowan is more aware that there might be times that he can't use his magic for whatever reason, and that he might be completely without a way to defend himself is a little concerning. All the same, he's a little unsure how to go about changing that, eventually deciding to try and just... use a staff to hit things?
He's not entirely clear on how people learn to fight, but that seems like that would be a large part of it, at least from what he's seen of templar training from the tower. So he sets about dragging a training dummy out of the of the mansion and setting it up haphazardly on the grounds. It leans far too much to be entirely stable but it seems good enough that he can give it a couple of whacks with a staff (also supplied by the wardrobe since he hadn't one himself in the dungeon he'd been pulled from) and feel like maybe he's getting the hang of this training thing.
You know, if all of his enemies are badly put together sacks of straw that don't fight back.

Him, mentoring Jowan? Even giving pointers is beyond what Anders had cared to do with apprentices back in the Circle unless it'd involved giving pointers on how to unintentionally set one's robes on fire and give everyone in the room a good laugh. Irving's beard would jump right off his face in his surprise if he could see him now.
"It smells like smoke over here!"
Making his way out of the mansion, he announces himself with a taunt as soon as he glimpses the other mage's turned back over on the spot of grass he'd chosen. It doesn't actually smell like a forest fire yet. But then the breeze is blowing the opposite way and the day is young.

"I was just..." he begins, fumbling for something that didn't sound entirely terrible and failing. "I thought I'd try some of the control exercises..." he ends up mumbling.
Clearly the control was a little bit of an issue for him, at least in this area. Honestly the frustrating thing is that he knows it's not that he can't control his magic at all, some spells are certainly easier than others, but it never seems to happen when he wants it to, even when he tries and tries and pushes himself as much as he can.

Hands on hips, he pretends to look around for the scorched wildlife or flaming bush that's making Jowan sound as guilt-stricken as a thief caught sneaking away in the night.
"A squirrel? The horses aren't stampeding in terror, so that's a good sign."
