[ sometime in the evening.

late in the night, after caroline is otherwise occupied and lucifer is engaging with other ... customers? is that the right word when no one pays a thing? what matters is it's after. elena's had a drink placed in front of her, and she turns in place to find her friend when she stumbles almost literally on an original. ]

Freya.

[ her voice carries with it a muted kind of surprise. her shoulders tense, helplessly and imperceptibly. ] You're back.

[She glances over at the sound of Elena's voice, and gives her a small smile. She then nudges the stool out next to her, giving her room to sit down next to her as she signals for another glass.]

For about eight hours now. Not long enough for word to have gotten around.

And ... you remember everything?

[ freya was gone for longer than a week, and that seems to be the usual standard. anything longer than that and people tend not to remember. the fact freya seems to means this ... is an unusual experience. ]

[She nods again, reaching for her drink and swirling it in her hand for a moment.]

I don't know anymore about how than you do, I'm afraid. I just consider myself lucky that I do.

[ elena gives a slow nod. it's what she finds terrifying: waking up one day and forgetting. forgetting wonderland, forgetting home, forgetting her own identity. it's what keeps her searching. still, freya is the one who went back home, and while freya's home is not mystic falls, it's their same world.

and rarely does good come from their world. ]

Are you okay?

[Freya smirks slightly, before shaking her head.]

Not really, no. But better than can be expected, given the circumstances.

[ it's still difficult for elena to feel sympathy toward a mikaelson, but she can tell this latest trip is weighing on freya. ]

That's sometimes all you can ask for, isn't it? [ it's a low bar, but it's dangerous to hold higher expectations. ]

I suppose it is.

[She takes another sip of her drink before glancing over and meeting the other woman's eyes.]

Damon informed me of what my siblings were up to while I was gone. I'm sorry you got caught in the cross hairs.

[ some of the amiability in elena's expression falls, pulling in a quelling breath as she meets freya's gaze. ]

What exactly did he tell you?

That one of them compelled you. And Bonnie did a spell that was incredibly risky.

[Not that she doubts Bonnie's power in any capacity, but she knows how easy it is to get in over your head when you have something you wish to accomplish. Freya has killed herself trying to channel more power than she can handle, but she was attached to a spell designed to resurrect her without her consent.

Even in Wonderland, there are limits to the number of deaths you can go through, and right now, Freya also doesn't believe she's worth dying for.]

I would have never asked that of her. Though I suppose it doesn't mean much when I wouldn't have to.

[being a witch and all.]

[ elena's throat locks up and she swallows past it somehow. ]

No, you wouldn't.

[ it's who bonnie is. to try and change that is to try and shape a metal that is not malleable.

they had a conversation about bonnie not too long ago, elena and freya. elena had been worried about their growing closeness, and she is no less worried now. in her heart of hearts, she'd known the truce up to that point had been superficial at best. she told herself it would work because the mikaelsons are a reality she must live with, and she wants the people she loves to be safe. ]

Have you talked to her?

[Before she knew the implications. Before she knew how much had happened in her absence.]

I'm afraid I'm not the best company tonight, so I thought a longer conversation may be best saved for later.

[ a small smirk twitches on her lips. circumstances not withstanding, elena can understand the sentiment. ]

I don't think anyone can hold it against you if you take some time to settle back in.

[She smiles a bit at that.]

I think Wonderland might. It never is really one to allow anyone to do anything quietly.

No, it does not.

[ elena's smile matches freya's, a bit, though it contains some ruefulness. ]

It will have been a year for me in February. That's so weird to think about. [ she's been in wonderland almost a year. ]

[She nods in agreement. A year was such a precious amount of time.]

It would be around now that I would have to start making my preparations for my next long nap. Trying to predict where my siblings would go so that in a hundred years, I would stand a good chance of at least being nearby.
