You can extend it to whatever size you want, and then hit this button on the back to project.

If it takes too much damage, it'll shut off until it can recharge, so you'll want to find some cover. I haven't used anything like this since training, so I don't remember if it shows you if it's close or not, but there's probably some kind of warning.
