Jay sets the camera down on the bench, lens facing out, and gingerly takes the ukulele. He fumbles with it for a second--it doesn't have a strap, so how is he supposed to...?--before holding it up at an odd angle. Craning his neck around to see the strings a little better, he clumsily plucks each one in order.
At the sound, he cringes, furrowing his brow. Of course. Just because it's got four strings doesn't mean the tuning's the same, and his ear's always been shit, so it's not like he can just retune it.
He can feel a tremor creep into his hands as he continues messing with it, sliding his left hand up the frets as he plucks at the highest string. He doesn't know what he's doing, and he knows it's obvious, but he can't just hand it back immediately.
Still only on that high string, tries to figure out a bar from "Dueling Banjos" by ear. He does not succeed.
Finally, stiffly, Jay hands the ukulele back, mumbling an apology as he does it. "Sorry, I just...I used to play--I used to mess around on bass, and I thought it might be the same kind of..." He trails off, dipping his head, and reaches for the camera.
