Kokichi had no reason to want himself dead. He just wanted to explore a bit, to go into the wooded area for just a moment then run right back out. He was kind of curious to see where the invisible end wall is in this place, but he could also ask later.

It's just curiosity. Curiosity that leads to him running into a stranger.
