Rick | OTA

[Rick keeps the door locked. He's Rick. He has memories of losing limbs, getting torn to pieces, watching planets explode. All kinds of memories of bad shit that happened to him. Which would make sense. He's Rick, and inherently selfish.]

[He doesn't need people to know that his apparent worst memory is something that happened to someone else.]

[He's at a wedding. Clearly it's an alien wedding on an alien planet--the people getting married are a human girl and an older man who appears to be part human, part bird. One might call him a "birdperson."]

[It's a beautiful wedding, like most weddings. Everyone is happy, but Rick is clearly uncomfortable, up till the point he stands up and clinks his fork against his glass. He has a speech prepared, it seems. But he quickly goes for the more tropey route, crumpling up his speech notes and tossing them aside. He gives a short, off-the-cuff speech about trust and family and love, and about how he doesn't trust any of those things, but that clearly they are things that other people trusts. His friend, Birdperson, is in love with this human girl, Tammy. And he wishes them well.]

[And he thinks about how maybe he can do better himself. Like maybe he can figure out how to trust this stuff too.]

[And then Tammy pulls out a gun.]

[She's a government operative for the Intergalactic Federation, and half the guests at this wedding--Birdperson and Rick included--are wanted terrorists. Birdperson looks at her, heartbroken. He asks her what's happening. He asks her why. She tells him to sit down, and he doesn't.]

[So she shoots him. He falls to the ground, dead. And Rick just screams.]

[It's a bloodbath after that. People whipping out guns, government agents exploding through the windows. Rick loses his portal gun, setting it to explode and kill as many Federation lackeys as he can. Then he grabs Morty and his family, steals a spaceship, and they get out unscathed. They're fine. None of them are hurt.]

[But he tells them they can't go home. The Federation will hunt them all down just to get to Rick. Summer starts crying.]

[Rick says he'll never make the mistake of trusting people ever again.]

[Because the thing is, he didn't know. He had no idea. He didn't see any of this coming. He's the smartest man in the universe, and he didn't realize that Tammy was an agent. He didn't see that the whole thing was a set-up. It was all right beneath his nose. And he was actually ready to start trusting things, opening himself up. He wasn't lying about that part.]

[And now his best friend is dead, his portal gun is gone, he's on the run, and his whole family has been dragged into his bullshit.]

[He tries to play it off. It's fine, it'll be fine. They can find a new planet. Earth sucks anyway. Who needs it? It's not a big deal.]

[Not a big deal at all.]
