"You are right. I can not be your mother." The answer comes, quickly and easily. It's something she already knew, knew for a while, and just hasn't brought up to anyone. Hasn't wanted to crush Frisk's hopes. "I care about you, and I will protect you. You need someone watching out for you. You need a family. But I will never be able to be that for you, as much as I want to. I wish I could do better for you, because I know you must need it. No child does the things that you do, who does not need help. No child..."
She shakes her head, as she finish her sentence, because something else crossed her mind. Something else that they've done, that she hasn't seen in other children. Something that's been bugging her for so long. "I do not... understand. I just do not understand. Why did you do it? Why... did you hate me so much?" Toriel doesn't want to be saying this. Doesn't want to be accusing them. They're a child, they can't be held fully accountable for their actions, but... she can't stop herself from feeling it, and she can't stop herself from saying it. "I could understand lashing out. You would not even have been the first human who lashed out, unaware of what they could do to monsters. But... that is not what I saw. You just... you were determined to murder me, and everyone else too, until there was nothing left, and as much as I try I just cannot imagine what could possibly drive you to do such a thing. Why a child who could apparently act so nice in all these other timelines you have done would intentionally set out to kill everyone they meet."
