Yep, definitely not a military guy. Fighting, to him and his folks, was more of a way to show off manliness, to show off 'strength' ー shit teens who lived a comparatively peaceful life came up with. It was never about survival. It was just getting down and dirty, trying to prove to each other their worth. To them, though, it was on the same level of a life-and-death matter. Which, now Mondo could see, was a whole load of crap. He'd never deny his life as a bousouzoku member, but coming here has opened him to a bigger perspective, a bigger world. What truly matters, what's important... it becomes much clearer here. Or rather, it has changed.
He intently waits for an answer, and, well. That's a surprise. Gun surely wasn't what he was expecting to hear. It makes sense, though. "But will it work if we're fightin' off those kinda monsters from that time?" After all, he didn't get to witness many of the fights before getting shoved to the safe area, where he wouldn't be an impediment to those who can fight.
