[Dan makes a noise in the back of his throat, bringing one hand up as if to say 'stop'.] No, see, that ain't what y' were askin' me.

[He pushes his hands into his pockets and squares up, not in any way about to throw a punch, but not backing down a single inch.]

Y' already accused me a' sellin' off my principles. Y' already decided I'm that sorta person because that's all y' know a' some mercs, an' all y' know's gotta be all that's true, yeah? [The acid dripping from his words could melt the floor clean through to the next level down.]

So, are y' askin' me if I ever did the wrong thing 'cause y' really wanna know, or are y' askin' me 'cause y' want some more evidence fer yer fuckin' preconception that all mercs are shit people wi' their morals up on a shelf fer anyone t' buy? [A thin, humourless smile twitches at his lips.]

I could like you, bud, much as I like the guy y' remind me of. Really, I could, an' if yer gonna be hangin' around Evie like y' are I'd really rather I did, 'cause I never like t' make things more difficult for her than they already are, but this shit, Frank? This way y' dig int' people by backin' 'em up an' makin' 'em feel like they gotta explain themselves t' you? I ain't here fer that. [His hands come free of his pockets, but only to turn palm-up as he shrugs.] We can get t' know each other like a couple 'a regular guys, but I ain't gonna be interrogated by you every time I say somethin' y' don't think y' like. Ain't happenin'.
