mucked: (☂ moves in mysterious ways)

[ she's in no hurry to find her way back to him. hell, it might be a good forty-five minutes. it might be more.

but rip is right. there is purpose and good work behind the time spent delaying their dance -- despite enjoying a game or two, this isn't one. she invests her attention back into jane, coaxing her to drink some water and agreeing to hit the dance floor for a tune. peggy props the other woman up. and, throughout it all, she won't send her gaze searching for him across the room.

and maybe it's not just her preoccupation with a friend that makes her drag her heels. the longer she's gone, the more she recognizes the folly in what she's promised. there is a woefully thin line between 'save me that spot on your dance card' and 'don't you dare be late' and peggy thinks it's not fair of her to cast rip as the surrogate in that bit of unfinished business haunting her heart. that was never ever how this arrangement of theirs was intended.

but it has the knock-on effect of revealing to peggy just how monumental something as casual as a dance has grown to be in her mind. it also reveals to her why she's turned every other partner down, tonight, apart from the ridiculous and the low-risk. jane, daisy, and she would have danced with tony if he'd wanted to. but everyone else got excuses. everyone apart from rip hunter, who instead got marching orders.

oh shite indeed.

it doesn't change the fact that peggy wants to dance with him. once the other business clears up, she makes an earnest effort to reconnect. there is no serendipity, this time, when she spies what's familiar from across the hall. distance (and the fact that the observation goes only one way) allows her to take another moment to appreciate the way in which he wears a suit.

peggy snakes her way through the crowd -- and makes a new year's resolution, just then, to stop making appointments and plans her heart can't always make good on. ]

Crisis averted, [ she announces as she strides into view from behind rip. she find him seated at one of the tables. ] For now.

[ and what interesting timing. because as she stands before him, hands on her hips, the truth is that she knows this song too. slower, sweeter, far more sentimental than the sprightly song they'd meant to take a turn to. earlier. ]
