Here we are as in olden days, happy golden days of yore | OPEN

Who: E V E R Y O N E (Including our 4th wall guests!)
Where: Everywhere, one both Mirror and Real Side!
When: December 12th - December 18th (WEEK ONE)
Rating: PG-13, warn if going higher
Summary: This year's Ewaymas celebration rolls out the way it usually does, with intense decorating, a sudden snowfall and...far more arrivals than usual! New faces and old fill the mansion - but why would Wonderland bring so many people at once? And why do some of them remember Wonderland?
The Story:

On the evening before December 12th, the captives of Wonderland might be awoken by a loud commotion. Some of it is typical Ewaymas noise, likely familiar to anyone who has been in Wonderland for more than a year – construction sounds and jingle bells as Wonderland decks its own halls quite literally. Garland and lights race down the walls and down the stairs, and stockings appear on the walls for each and every person in Wonderland, embroidered with their names. There are decorative candles everywhere, and all sorts of decorations for every conceivable winter holiday, even if it does not align perfectly to the dates of Ewaymas. Time isn't real, so there will be menorahs and dreidels and Star of Davids even though Hanukkah ended two days prior. And of course, in the front hall, growing straight out of the floor, is a large decorated tree full of ornaments for everyone. And as always, it will have snowed heavily overnight, bringing all of the snow Wonderland will have between now and spring.

There is a second source of commotion in the night though – the sound of a crowd.

Over the course of the night, dozens of new arrivals will appear in Wonderland. Some for the first time. Some wondering how they managed to return with their memories. Others stumbling in with no recollection of ever having been here. Some might be friends from other timelines, other possibilities, and some might even be doubles of people who are already in Wonderland. It's strange for Wonderland to drag so many people into the mansion at once, but everything seems to indicate that they are supposed to be there. They have their own network devices and even have their own stockings on the wall and their own ornaments on the tree – by all accounts, it seems Wonderland expects that they'll be staying, and is treating them like any other new arrivals. Please, make them feel at home and help them settle in nicely.

The first few days will be for catching up with old friends and enjoying the decorations and settling into Wonderland. However, within a couple of days the decorations will start to glitch, much the way corrupted computer graphics might. Lights might change abruptly from multi-color to blue or white, entire décor styles will abruptly change, candle flames will flicker on and off like broken fluorescent lights, and any singing decorations might loop on a beat or two over and over putting you into an eternal hell. Wonderland doesn't seem to be able to stick to one motif, and it can't stop changing. These glitches are occurring on both the Real Side of Wonderland and the Mirror Side.

By the 15th, these glitches will include entire rooms changing into different holiday scenes. These scenes will all be of characters at various winter holidays in the past, the present (in their world), or a possible future. At this point in the event, characters will still be able to navigate the basic mansion and be able to exit these moments easily. These scenes cannot be interacted with – Wonderland seems to consider them another form of decorating. Unlike previous events of this type, these scenes will not loop at first. They will play once, and then Wonderland will glitch and correct itself to be the room it is supposed to be. The scene might play again, but it will be in a different location if it does.

By this point, Wonderland is having an increasingly difficult time holding itself together in a way that makes geographical sense. You might exit one room, even a room that was not previously playing a scene, and find yourself in the kitchen or on the roof instead of in the hallway. You might open a door that you were sure led to your room only to see a ten foot drop to the grounds outside.

This is the mingle log for WEEK ONE! For more information on this part of the event or any questions, please head over to the plot post, or check out our Fourth Wall Master Post for your other Fourth Wall event needs! Prose or [action brackets] are welcome. Please clearly indicate whether your character is on the Real Side or Mirror Side in your top levels. And of course, have fun! ♥

It certainly was.

[Which is putting it mildly, but they're past it. Doesn't mean she might not have words about it later on, but for now, she's past it.]

Can't say I'm happy to hear Henry's left, but we know it all works out.

[Which is weird. But now she kind of gets what it was like for everyone else when she was the one from an earlier time.]

[Those last words don't sound like Tim. Close, but not quite. It's a quote, then, but from who?]

[Guess there's a lot they don't know about each other. That's not even counting however long their timelines...diverged, or however the hell this worked. For all Jay knows, it's just been a coincidence Tim knew to say the right things earlier. Unlikely, but a possibility he's not completely ready to discount.]

[There's an ache in his chest, and he wants it to shut up and let him think. This Tim can't stay, if he can help it. He's got people to get back to, and it sounds like he's been traveling for a while. Maybe he's settled down. Maybe he's got another house, a little white picket fence, the works. Maybe the axe is just for chopping wood.]

Who? Like, who's... [Think, before you waste a question. And it is a genuine question; he's genuinely curious. His voice softens, less insistent.] Who d'you need to get back to?

I...

[Normally, she'd say she's fine, but she's more shaken up by this than she'd like to be. So she's not going to lie about it.]

I don't know. Did you see that?

[She figures Ange did, but it'd be nice to have confirmation that was real. Or as real as Wonderland showing people weird stuff can be.]

"Don't you dare talk about my father."

He starts toward her, prepared to strike truthfully this time. But she keeps talking, mostly nonsense until she speaks of a specific conversation. He freezes, eyes widening.

"You can't know about that." Ophelia had been so bright then, so passionate. She knew everything he didn't. They were perfectly matched. "It shouldn't be on file anywhere." It took him years to understand that he'd fallen in love with her that very day.

[Starlight doesn't celebrate Christmas because, you know, she's a pony and not from a world where it's a thing. Still, the trappings of Christmas are pretty similar to the trappings of Hearth's Warming. A holiday she isn't actually that fond of.

She rolls her eyes as she walks by, gesturing at the stocking with her horn.]

It's all pretty over-done, isn't it? Like, wow, I know everypony loves their holidays, but it's so much.

[Georgia's been in Wonderland long enough that she knows magic is real, but she will never, ever allow herself to start believing in destiny. Besides, she's pretty sure that no fortune teller could have guessed the twists her life's taken so far. She sees no reason to suspect it's going to get any simpler.

Plus, she hates people asking her to smile. Her usual scowl deepens under her sunglasses.]

Sorry, already used up my monthly allotment of smiles. I'll pass.

[Hey, it's weird camera nerd friend! Hi weird camera nerd friend!

Dipper notices the filming, of course, and also the static, and with characteristic Dipper Pines tact, he comes up behind Jay and stands on tip-toe to look at the little screen.]

Wow, you could totally do, like, found footage horror movie stuff with that! You wouldn't even have to digitally make it staticky, the world's just doing it for you! It'd be so cool!
burntvideocassette: (i screwed up)

[personal profile] burntvideocassette 2018-12-20 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Jay jolts, and the camera's autofocus struggles to keep up.]

God--!

[Dipper. Right, the...yeah, Dipper. That kid who knows way more than a kid his size should know. That kid whose world is vaguely similar to his own, but not quite.]

[Jay barely parses what he says, his brain trying to pull itself together. Found footage horror, like...like what, that cannibal movie? Wait--wait, he's got one.]

Don't tell me you've seen Blair Witch. You're, what, twelve?
testcase: (all you had you wasted)

No, it definitely is. There's no way I could have seen this coming.

[After all, there's so many people here, even she can't analyze who's going to appear and when.]

I mean I could've been like whoa, where did the normal Ishimaru-kun go?! Or hey, are you his older brother or something?

[These are all done with the appropriate amount of surprise before she stops playacting.]

But those wouldn't have really been right, right?

[If he's older and wearing some emblem she hasn't seen yet, that means he survived the killing game. And while it could happen, she knows she wouldn't plan an outcome where the survivors wouldn't learn the despair inducing identity of the mastermind, so she can figure out that he must know.

Unless of course he's some completely different Ishimaru from some other reality where none of that happened, but she thinks that's pretty unlikely.]

[He wants to hook his thumb around the chain on his neck, pull out the locket hidden beneath the layers of clothing thick enough, sturdy enough, for this sort of cold weather. Dangle the golden heart shape with the word Friend inscribed across its front, that he put on the day he received it (June 19th - count the months, Tim) and never removed since.]

[Friend, like he didn't use them as a psychological fulcrum to pry himself away from the texture of their soul.]
[Friend, like he wasn't an ever-present reminder, a threat, of the tenuous existence they'd fought like hell to establish.]
[Friend, like he doesn't keep digging himself in deeper and deeper into problems they have to keep tearing him out from.]

Friends, [says Tim.]

[They were kids that I once knew.]

[Alex snarls, tears after. Crashes up against the door as it slams shut, the thudding of meat and muscle impacting an unyielding surface. Pounding up against it would be useless. He does it anyway, once, slamming a clenched fist up against the door with a wordless yell.]

Don't think you can run away forever! You can't, you hear me?

[This Alice is wearing jeans and an oversized flannel shirt and clutching a backpack to her chest. This entire place has her on guard. It's not right, and she doesn't know how to even begin to explain that.

She'd probably have a lot more trouble with the woman in front of her if her father wasn't very specifically the duplicate of a different pirate. This girl doesn't even look that much like her, really.

But she can tell. The same way she could tell something was very wrong in Hyperion Heights, the way she knew Robin even when Robin wasn't Robin and Alice wasn't Alice. This girl is also Alice, but she's not her.]

Like the glasses. [She approaches cautiously. She doesn't know this place and she's still not comfortable here. Even more than she's generally always not comfortable.] This your Wonderland, then?

[personal profile] krmvgivv 2018-12-20 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Dipper's in the kitchen as well, and he does a double take when he sees Alice. It's not that she looks that different, now that he's looking at her, but the formal dress and the glasses make her look older in a way that makes his heart twist because he knows that she'll never really be older. Not as long as she's here.

He glances away, focusing on the sandwich he's assembling.]

Nice outfit.

Oh.

[Tim has friends. Friends, plural, more than just Brian. People he wants--needs to get back to, people he cares about.]

[Jay's met a few people here. If Wonderland let him remember, he probably would've tried to get back to them, too. The Masons. Clem. Shepard. Sans. It's been so long. He's seen Shaun and Georgia, but beyond that, who's left? He knows most of them are able to take care of themselves--hell, that might be why he kept tagging along. Still, he wants to check in. See if they're alright.]

[His Tim made friends here, too, right? There was George, he knows. Shepard seemed to like them both.]

[There was Jay, though he's not sure he even counted. Like family, but family can treat you like shit sometimes. His memory of home is still patchy, but that seems right.]

Pretty strong endorsement. That you wanna get back, I mean.
burntvideocassette: (complaining)

[personal profile] burntvideocassette 2018-12-20 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Jay isn't running. Despite everything, he isn't running; he's holding the door shut from the other side, scanning the theater for a makeshift barricade. There isn't much.]

[This is why he's dead. This, right here, this bullshit. This frail, stupid hope that maybe he can make contact with Alex Kralie. Talk to him. Have a nice conversation. Get the answers he's been trying to find for four and a half years running (nearly six if he counts Wonderland).]

[Jay shouts through the door, voice cracking.]

What's killing me going to fix, huh? You still don't stay dead after five, and It's not here, Alex!
breakthecurse: ただいま! (And maybe tomorrow)

[personal profile] breakthecurse 2018-12-20 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
[She's a little surprised at first, the way she always is when someone shows her a little bit of affection, but then she hugs back just as warmly.]

Has it been a really long time? Now that I'm back I feel like I was just here...

[Time is so strange in Wonderland that she has no idea at all really.]
postictal: (uh huh sure | smoking)

[personal profile] postictal 2018-12-20 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they've had enough people run out on them. I was kinda looking to break the streak.

[People who leave. People who never come back. People who they've broken from their lives, only to see them hurtling back, blank-faced and unknowing.]

[Maybe it would've been easier for them, if he hadn't become that. Easier, maybe, but better?]

[His tone is wry and deprecating and dismissive.]

...figures it wouldn't play out like that.
rosswood: (YOUTUBE IS NOT A JOB)

[He's not one for giving up. He starts to kick the door repeatedly, until his toes start to ache. Until the bones in his leg vibrate with the intensity of it, until his teeth ache from gritting them.]

It wasn't supposed to be! You brought it back. You brought It back, after everyone else had forgotten. You think It hasn't followed you here?

You brought It with you.

Oh! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to pressure you at all. Please, take all the time you need.

[She's very sincere in her apology, and nods her head in a small bow as she does. She shouldn't have assumed he was ready to order!]

Hm...well, for the holidays we've been making fried chicken and Christmas cake! It's something the diner does every year for Christmas. Colonel Santa even comes to visit the diner from the closets, just like at fried chicken restaurants in Japan!

[She says that, but...then she suddenly remembers what happened when they tried to pull Colonel Sanders Santa out of the closets this year - this year, he'd started to glitch something terrible, to the point where they'd had to just put him back. A look crosses her face, one suggesting that if she had remembered the glitching she would not have brought him up.]

A-Ah, except....I'm afraid Colonel Santa won't be coming this year. He couldn't make it... B-But the fried chicken is still very good!

Let's see. One...two...and three! Like that?

[She's never done anything like this before, so she hopes she did it the right way.]

[They've had enough people run out on them. That's enough to set an idea in Jay's head. He's not overly fond of it, but that's not important. It's the right thing, this idea, so it's what he should do. Simple as that.]

When this place sent me back, it put me right--I mean, I'm not positive, but I think it put me back in the exact same spot. Wiped--wiped my memories, too. Not that that's anything new.

[Jay shrugs. It's not very convincing.]

And this--this thing I read while I was here the first time said that time doesn't pass back--back home, while you're here. So what I'm saying is...maybe you didn't, like, abandon them or anything.

[He fidgets with the camera, tapping at the side of it. He's not getting anywhere near the record button, deliberately; he just has to move. He can feel his words sticking in the back of his throat, feel his jaw tensing up, but he's got to get Tim to understand.]

And look, I'm not sure, but Wonderland's seeming like...Look, it does weird stuff sometimes. Usually only about a weekend, sometimes longer. But then it puts things back the way it found them. Everything goes back to normal. So...so maybe, 's long as we don't screw anything up, we can get it to, uh. Maybe we can get it to set things back to normal. For you.

Ahhhhh! Oh no!

[She laughs though - she'd only been play-screaming.]

That's exactly what I'm doing! The White Queen's given me a very important job to do. I'm supposed to watch to make sure Wonderland doesn't start breaking, so I wanted to make sure I had a good view!
curiousher: (Laughing)

[personal profile] curiousher 2018-12-20 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I think they make me look sharp.

[She adjusts them, clearly proud of that fact.]

I've been very well. The Queen of Hearts is gone and I've been acting as royal adviser to the White Queen! Oh, she replaced her by the way. And I've got my eyes back! And I remember Dinah! [She gasps!] That's right! I never told you about Dinah. She's my cat at home and I remember her now!

[Obviously that's much more important than the change in political figures in Wonderland.]
curiousher: (Laughing)

[personal profile] curiousher 2018-12-20 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
[Alice absolutely doesn't mind the company, especially when that company is Mabel.]

Ooo! They really would, wouldn't they? I'd look like someone on my way to go look at only the fanciest of fancy things.
