It takes Peridot a moment to even process what Jasper- illusory, out of character, and generally awful in impressively new ways- is saying to her right now, so the immediate response that comes out of her is also, "What?" but in a much duller, vapid way.
And then it hits her.
If she had a stomach, it would have knotted up into pretzel-like contortions. She slaps her hands to her mouth as if Jasper has asked her to do the unthinkable, all for Lapis's safety. This isn't real, but she still feels like anything that she says will and can be held up for scrutiny later.
"Take her place," she repeats, cautiously, like maybe she heard wrong or she's mistaken. Her lime green skin has gone a shade paler at the thought. "You mean fuse with you?"
Peridot doesn't know how to handle fusion on a good day. In theory, she's almost comfortable with it, but this is a concept that sets her back a good fifteen paces. She doesn't like Jasper at all, and knows on some level how visceral and horrible Malachite was for both of them- moreso Lapis, than Jasper, though given Jasper's reactions post-Malachite, it clearly did something to her, too.
