Christopher Pike - History Teacher - OTA

History Class

[Pike's not known for being an easy teacher by any stretch of the imagination, but he is a fair teacher, and that approach is one he hopes gets him some measure of respect from the students. The main rule in is class is, do what is asked of you and everything will be fine.]

So who knows the answer? What year was the Magna Carta signed?

Teacher's Lounge

[There are days where he wishes he remembered to put whiskey in his coffee. Today is one of those days. Teenagers can be so. aggravating. He's sitting on one of the 'too old to still be used' couches, legs crossed. His paperwork is on his lap but he isn't paying attention to it. Honestly, if he had to read one more paper about ninjas in communist Russia, or something equally ridiculous, he was going to scream.]

Wildcard!
[I'll run with anything! Seriously, be those kids that turn all the desks backward to mess with him.]

[ Respect is a difficult term with Ange. Sure, she's not a disruptive student in any way, just minding her own business, but she is also not the most engaged student either, so she isn't exactly a teacher's pet. She'd prefer spending her days just here in the back of the classroom, not having to say anything.

So when he's asking the class a question, she's just going to be over here in the back suddenly staring at her desk very intensively in that typical "don't let him call on me for it" way teenagers do. ]

[Since no one is answering the question, it was time for Pike to pick someone at random, so of course, he picks the one person who obviously wants to stay invisible.]

Ms. Ushiromiya?
entreats: but better is no excuse for tonight (so you almost feel better)

[ Just kill her now. ]

I guess that's not actually referring to a big card. [ She doesn't sound like she's trying to be a smartass on purpose (there's no sense of mischievousness about her whatsoever, at least), more like she's trying to figure out the answer as she goes here. Since she has absolutely no idea. ]

[At least he does a good job of staying completely neutral.]

No, try again.
entreats: (to come back home)

[ She makes a bit of a "why me" face, but she's still trying. Mostly by trying real hard to find some context clues here. ]

If it was something that was signed, then it was.. probably some treaty?

Closer...what period of history are we studying?

[He's trying to be encouraging, as best he can.]

[ See, now that much she can answer. It's not as if she pays zero attention to the class, after all. ]

The Middle Ages, right? Medieval times.

That's right.

[The 'good job' he wanted to add was evident in the tone of his voice.]

Now, in England, what happened? Were there abuses of power?
entreats: (she swears that there's no difference)

[personal profile] entreats 2019-07-08 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Aren't there always? [ That's just the cynical part of her talking, because what she has seen of the adult world sure sucks. Even the way some teachers abuse their power is bad enough, even if she doesn't think he belongs to that category in particular. ]

If we're talking about those times, it's got to be either the nobility of the religious leaders abusing their power. They were the ones who had it.

[Mikleo has his hand raised as quickly as he can]

The Magna Carta Libertatum was signed on the fifteenth of June, 1215. In England, anyway. Since we're only nine hours ahead of them, it's possible we'd observe the signing on June sixteenth as there is a distinct possibility a minimum of four hand-drafted and signed copies could conceivably keep the proceeds from concluding before three in the afternoon their time and thus midnight in Japan. Though that's retroactive to both the introduction of time zones and the Gregorian calendar.

[FINALLY. Someone did the reading assignment, and extra reading from what it sounds like. He gets a small smile, good job!]

What was the reason for drawing up the document in the first place?

I think by the 16th century they were more or less viewed as sort of a bill of rights to protect individual English freedoms, but at the time it was more a matter of barons protecting themselves against illegal imprisonment by King John.

[ Steve is a good student. He gets high grades, he turns in all his homework and he usually pays attention in class. But he’s also a teenaged boy and he’s a smart ass. And he’s plays sports- needless to say he can be a cliche. But his mischievous side is usually all in good fun, and he happens to like Professor Pike, probably more than any other teacher in the school.

Which is why he is currently rearranging the desks in the classroom to face the opposite way. He’s about halfway to pushing the teachers’ desk across the room when the door opens and he freezes.

This isn’t what it looks like!
