The hole wasn't too far off its mark. The hole was very clearly just to the side of James' face, a bit uncomfortably close to it. Light leaked into the room though, and unfortunately for Snape, it gave James a clearer view than he'd had.

" Missed me!" he laughed. Luck was on his side this time! " Expelliarmus!"

Hopefully the disarming would distract him long enough for James to get the door open. A closet was hardly the safest place to be fighting, especially with spells. If they were going to have a good duel, it needed to be out in the hall.
