pottershotter: (Hesitating)

James laughs a little too hard at that.

"Pfft. Shh. M'not...I won't have a hangover! I'll be fine."

This isn't just drunkenness (though the drunkenness is clear from the way he says 'fine' as if it has three or four i's in it). This is a complete and utter lie. This version Jo has even seen him hungover. He's always been this way; he gets too distracted when he's drunk and he never eats enough or has enough water and he always feels like death warmed over the next day. None of this has changed in the future, really. Sure he drinks for more problematic reasons, and when the mansion was working correctly he drank more often, but none of that made him any better at handling a hangover.

He's grinning pretty widely though, in a sneaky, mischievous way - as if he's fully aware of what a huge lie it is and he's thoroughly amused to be getting away with it. It's the same look he gets when he's lying to a professor and knows he can't be caught...except, he's too drunk to see he's been caught ten times over.

It's clear that it's his cue to go though, so he steps away from the bar, with only the slightest wobble. He's good though; he doesn't seem like he's going to tip over.

"I will, I will," he promises anyway. "I'll be alright. I'm fine. Fine. ...see you, Jo."

He leaves on that note, and he makes it about halfway to the door, but stops. He turns, and he looks back, maybe a little more somberly than he should - as if he wants to say something important to her, but he isn't sure what.

A beat later, he forcibly pulls his face into a smile, and waves goodbye if she's looking his way. And then, he's gone without another word.
