Victor spoke of it all so casually that Martha barely knew how to react.

Before, he'd been ashamed. He'd been guilty. He'd expressed a desire to change, and he'd at least tried. Now he wasn't apologizing for his behavior; he was apologizing for a possible death, but it didn't ring very true when he was so matter-of-fact about it.

"I never found out for certain, but I was fairly certain that you killed someone," she said grimly. "The thing is that death here isn't... how it should be. People come back from death, and I think that bothered you. That it was so easy here, when you'd tried so hard."

That had been the start of his downward spiral: Clara's death. "But after the fifth death, something happens. Something bad. We don't know what it is, but..." This was like having the same conversation all over again, but she had to try and get through to him.
