Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same...
Who: Raven Darkholme Rachel Archer and YOU!
Where: The Archer Residence, the Pie Hole, and out an about on the streets
When: October 24-28
Rating: TBD, PG to start
Summary: Rachel starts out with a perfectly happy family, and the nagging feeling that she doesn't really deserve it. Things spiral out of control from there.
The Story:
October 24th
Rachel starts out the days after her 21st birthday with a new colour of hair, and she isn't quite sure why. It isn't as if she's ever hated being a brunette, it's just that -- it seems to suit Kitty so much better! That's what she cheerfully tells her family, at least. She still wants to fit in and be a good, upstanding citizen ... really, she does.
She spends her days as always - early breakfast with the whole family, followed by a shift at the Pie Hole. Fred is a good manager, and there's always the chance that she'll run into Sam Wesson stopping by for lunch. She knows he's attached already, but she can't help her attraction to him. She's cheerful and flirty with her customers, bobbing around the diner with all the energy that she can muster up. It's easier to get tips that way, and she's always felt like she needs to contribute at least as much as Kitty does to the family income.
Besides, Christmas is coming up and she really wants to get Jake something nice.
By the time she arrives home, she kicks off her high heeled shoes into the corner of the landing and flops down onto the couch. Waitressing is more tiring than most people can understand.
October 25th-27th
If anyone is having trouble recognizing Rachel, it's because she's gone further than just dying her hair so that she doesn't look like Kitty. She's cut it all off, a short pixie crop that makes her look like a different person. She did it herself, but it's still a fairly good cut - it makes her look older, she thinks. It had been impulsive, but she'd felt like it was necessary. Something about seeing herself in the mirror makes skin crawl the morning of the 25th, and she's hoping the change will make it stop.
It doesn't.
When she's at work on the evening of the 25th, she thinks she's unbearably itchy. She reaches down and her arm feels strange, and there's a split-second when she looks down at it that she swears it's blue. She asks Fred to go home early, and when she arrives home to the place she's always been comfortable in, the bed feels too soft. She stays in most of the 26th, tossing and turning with nightmares of missiles and soft, sandy beaches that she doesn't understand.
On the 27th, she thinks she feels well enough to go back in to work...at least until she sees Sam Wesson at the diner, eating dinner. Her cheeks grow hot, but it's more than that -- when she hustles into the back to compose herself and go take his order, she doesn't see herself in the mirror. She's Regan, from head to toe. A dark part of her almost wants to walk out front and sit down next to Sam. She could surprise him, kiss him on the cheek and pretend that she was his girlfriend.
The idea makes her stomach drop, though, and after a few minutes of holding her head in her hands, a glance back into the mirror confirms that she looks like herself. She takes a few deep breaths and moves back out to the front, cheerful and ready to take his order. Later that night, she goes out to find James Winters. He'd always been able to help her forget things, and maybe if she brings a bottle of something strong and alcoholic, it will last.
October 28th
What's worse than the first hangover of your life? Realizing that the first hangover of your life is that much more terrible because it's your first hangover and you're in your 30s. The feelings of guilt that are rolling over her aren't just because she's pretty sure she disappointed her father coming home slurring her words last night, but because she's suddenly sure that she doesn't belong here. What's more, when she looks around the room -- it doesn't look like Rachel's room at all.
Even when she stumbles in to work at the pie shop, she's acutely aware that she doesn't work there. Her name is Mystique, Raven, and she's never fit in. It's only recently that she's been reminded that she doesn't want to...but the idea of having a real family like the Archers was too appealing for her to forget. She's nauseous from the hangover, but she thinks she might be nauseous for better reasons than that.
