[James should know better really. He's been here longer than most people, and he knows what kinds of things Wonderland can do to people. He knows how suspicious it can be, and he's been hit particularly hard by the last several events, so he should be more concerned about it than anyone, really. However, James is also naturally a curious person, and he's never been fond of anyone trying to tell him what to do. Plus, they're just biscuits - how much harm could they really do?
Lily's efforts have been valiant, but unfortunately it's just not possible to be with James every second of every day (though by now anyone who's known them more than five seconds might be surprised to hear that) and she can't guard the kitchen forever. At some point, he does manage to sneak off on his own, and as soon as he realizes he is on his own, he gives one of the Christmas treats a try.
As soon as he does, he very suddenly and abruptly becomes seven years old, and while he's not sure how he got where he is exactly, he has a feeling that he has probably done something he wasn't supposed to do and that he's going to be in VERY be trouble whenever he gets caught doing...whatever it was. He can't really remember, but he's fairly sure he's done something that his mum wouldn't be happy about.
So, he sneaks away from the kitchen and tries very hard not to get caught by anyone who might like to catch him. This works for approximately two minutes, until he reaches the large Christmas tree in the entrance hall. Any guilty feelings are entirely forgotten and all of his effort goes into seeing if it's a Christmas tree he can actually climb.]
