I can't believe that. [Because if there really is no logic, no pattern, if it really is all truly random, then there's nothing he can do. Then he really is helpless. Then Mabel can be taken from him and given back with no rhyme and reason. That he could be taken from her. Then all of this is just... pointless.

He doesn't think he can function if that's truly the case.]
