[Closed] Here are your upturned hands.
Who: Steve Rogers & Bucky Barnes
Where: Steve's room
When: Backdated to the 4th of July
Rating: PG for Possible Grandpa smooching
Summary: The gayest birthday date you have ever seen. Also, Bucky gets a hair cut.
The Story:
As far as the past few events go, James has been lucky. He got maimed by a couple of ghouls, and Darcy and Steve got hit by angels in different ways, but at least he's been in control of himself for the extent of it. It feels like it's only a matter of time before that changes. If there's anything James has learned over the years, it's that sooner or later, he'll lose everything all over again. The more he tries to hold on to, the worse it's going to be, but he'll fight that battle again when he comes to it. He tries not to think about it too much.
He watches his reflection in the mirror. It's oddly calming, slicing away layers of hair in large chunks at first then neat, careful lines. While his hands are occupied, they're steady, as if metal and flesh have both held on to muscle memory. His body remembers fighting, remembers killing, and remembers this. He and Steve would often cut each other's hair to save money, when they were younger, but that world is mostly gone, and it isn't coming back. He makes a few more adjustments, then sets the scissors down.
Even after all of this time, his reflection stares back at him like a stranger, but this is as much a part of who he is as the Winter Soldier. Maybe more so. Everything about the Winter Soldier had existed as an object that was useful to someone else, or nothing at all. This was his own choice, whether he really thought it suited him or not. Like every small and personal act of control, it felt terrifying, and it felt right.
And anyway, he hadn't done it entirely for himself.
A glance at the clock tells him it's been the 4th of July for a few hours now. Steve will be up soon, if he isn't already, but this time James has left him a note telling him to stay put, that he would be back. He finishes cleaning up and changes into jeans and a black t-shirt, then heads downstairs.
The closets are benevolent enough to let him have a big enough breakfast tray to set out two super soldiers' worth of food. There's sausage, bacon, eggs, pancakes all piled high, and a big bowl of fresh fruit to share between them. He has to shoulder his way into Steve's room, but he's sort of glad to have the food between them, because he isn't sure he's ready for whatever reaction Steve might have.
"Rise and shine, punk." Yup, totally confident. Not at all anxious.
