Calamity Song

Who: John Blake ([personal profile] oversight) + OPEN
Where: Able Township
When: 08/08 - 08/10
Rating: R - potential/eventual violence
Summary: A catch-all post for the duration of the event.
The Story:

August 8th - 9th - miscellaneous

Having gotten used to Wonderland and its very easy access, John finds the transition to an Able-based life a little jarring, but not outside his scope of personal experience. Since arriving several years ago, he's had to deal with a multitude of situations of a surprisingly similar grade, and learning to be alert and aware in new situations has always come easy.

Needless to say, he's accepted the conditions for what they are... for the most part.

What he hasn't accepted, though, is the attitude toward the dead, or in this case, the undead. There are situations that are certainly outside one's control, and much must be done to avoid becoming undead, but as far as the former cop's concerned, they don't have to sensationalize the removal of the zombies. The first time he catches wind of the competitions, it very nearly starts him ranting and raving on a soapbox in the middle of camp.

But, it's only a couple of days, right? A couple of days where he suspects they could all completely avoid destroying the undead, but what does he know? He comes from a world where the closest they have to zombies are highly medicated people trudging through their depressing lives.

Ultimately, to keep to himself to avoid causing tension, John sets his jaw and goes about helping with missions and tending to the rather unkempt garden. He knows very little about nursing plants, but he's willing to learn if it means he can avoid being a part of this small society that thrives on brutal competition.

August 10th - post infection

As time passes, so does the severity of their situation. John realizes, at some point, that he can no longer stand by and hope the people around him will handle things. It's all hands on deck, as they say, and while he's fully committed himself not to destroying the attacking hoards, he does find there are at least a few ways to effectively stop their advance.

And it works. At least for a while.

Using homemade traps and other such sundries, he ceases the advance of more than a dozen stragglers before things get a little too sketchy for him to feel he can handle everything safely on his own.

It an unlucky move — an unfortunate oversight that leads to him obtaining a scratch — just a small break of skin that weeps blood. John notices it late, after he's back inside the walls, and while he can't recall how he got the scratch, he's fairly certain it wasn't from a zombie.

Mostly certain.

Maybe.
