Closed | Shattered Sight Event [backdated]
Who: Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes
Where: The Training Room
When: September 19th [backdated to the event]
Rating: R
Summary: Sam may not be as forgiving as he likes to pretend.
The Story: I'm sure it's clear and plain to read, it's not an alibi you need.
It wasn't hard to detect the shift in attitudes within the mansion, but the change within his own thinking was harder to see objectively. Possibly because it wasn't so much a change of heart as much as a shift. He already had his own reservations about the man that used to be Bucky Barnes.
It was hard to forget that dead eyed stare that they'd gotten as he'd slid to a stop on the highway after ripping the steering wheel out of Sam's hands. Hard to forget the fact that he'd shot Natasha in the shoulder as she'd been running away from him. Hard to forget the way that Steve had looked on the bank of the Potomac, beaten and bloody and only the slowest rise and fall of his chest any sign that he was still alive at all.
He'd told Steve once that Bucky may not be the kind of man that he could save but Steve had brushed him off, sure that he could do the impossible. He refused to believe that he wouldn't be able to bring his best friend back. Sam could only imagine what that felt like. If he learned yesterday that Riley was still alive, brainwashed and made into a killer assassin, he'd kill himself trying to save him as well. It was why he'd thrown his lot in with Steve. It was why he spent the better half of a year chasing down leads and trying to find a ghost.
But the biggest reason he pressed on was because he knew that Steve needed some kind of protection. Barnes was too much of a weak spot for him and as deadly as he was in person, the memory of him was even more dangerous. If only because Steve would never be able to let it go as long as Bucky was still out there. Steve needed to come to terms, one way or the other with the fact that Bucky may never be the person that he'd known again. And if Sam knew anything at all, he knew that the last thing Steve needed was to be alone when that realization really hit him.
But all of that had been out there. Here, in Wonderland, there was no escape or outrunning things. He didn't know where Steve and Bucky stood, but he did know that he had a few things he needed to get straight with the Winter Soldier. Which is why he sought him out this morning, finally finding him in the training room.
He strode full of purpose, stopping just short of the assassin and crossing his arms. "I need to talk to you."
