I think the only way to impress him would be to slay the archdemon in single combat. Even that might not do it. [Impressing him definitely doesn't seem possible for Alistair himself. Sten seems to disapprove of him in general. Kind of like how he disapproves of Morrigan and Zevran and Oghren and just about all of them.] And I wouldn't expect that to make him less serious. If he ever manages to smile I'll eat Oghren's boots.
