when oblivion is calling out your name [CLOSED]
Who: Steve Rogers & Billy Kaplan, Lydia Martin, Michonne, Natasha Romanoff, Wanda Maximoff
Where: Throughout Wonderland
When: Late on 4/21 and the days following
Rating: PG-13 for references to violence/death
Summary: Steve comes to after his first real mansion death, and there are people who want to check on him, as much as he might like to move on like it never happened. (This was a pre-arranged log, which is why it's closed, but if you want a thread with Steve post-death contact me at
demonology and we'll see if we can work something out!)
The Story:
It had all happened so fast.
That's always how Steve had imagined it would be. Death, when you're a soldier, isn't something that's drawn out. One second you're there, the next you're gone. How many other men had he seen go down that way? They'd be cracking jokes or shouting orders, and then the next thing you knew they were sprawled out on the ground with blood leaking from a hole in their head.
Nothing as simple as a bullet had taken Steve out, though. The last thing he remembers is the decayed, putrid fingers of that Infected pulling at his jaw, pulling and pulling until something snapped—
No, the last thing he remembers is how the pain of that had been nothing compared to realizing that he'd failed to keep Darcy safe.
It happens in reverse. One second he's dead, the next second he isn't.
Steve rockets up in bed, heart jolting back into life at a rapid rate, breaths heaving in and out of lungs that haven't expanded in twenty-four hours. Eyes wide and reddened, Steve stares at the room around him, realizes that it's his, and notices the absence of his dog. Whoever had brought him here must have realized it would be cruel to leave an animal with their dead owner.
Hand clutching into the fabric of his shirt over his chest, Steve pushes himself to his feet and finds that his muscle creak with the movement. He's been on that bed for a whole day, or maybe even two days. He's not sure, because what happened during that event on the Oregon Trail hadn't been typical of Wonderland, seeing how he'd become a ghost.
This is all much more real, and therefore more frightening.
As much as Steve wants answers (who found him? who already knows what happened?), he doesn't want to draw attention to himself either. So after stopping by the dining hall for some food, he goes straight to the training room. Punching a heavy bag into oblivion is always his go-to method for getting his thoughts in order. He's going to have to own up to someone about this, in particular Darcy, but for now he needs prove to himself that his blood is still flowing through his veins.
