Intervening in literally any sense. But no. He preferred to, what, watch and wait and see if something interesting would happen? Like it's a stimulating thought experiment. Did he go about it the wrong way? Yes, now that he's had time to consider it at a reasonable length. Should've just scared them off, chased them away. They did something to get the drop on him, but he's not sure what. Still can't figure that out. Can't get his head on straight.
