The Story:

first t w o d a y s - open
[Jane Doe is called such out of irony, really. She makes people forget, makes them the Janes and John Does of the world who know nothing of what happened to them, the secrets they've heard, the things they've done.

At least, that's how she's been told she should act. Eliminate human memories, take away everything until they're weak husks with no way to function on their own. Every now and then, to keep up appearances, she has to, she has no choice. But she hates it, she hates it every time, especially when there's an audience. She's supposed to feel superior, and instead, she feels like some twisted executioner, every time. And then, she went and fell in love with a human, making her life full of color against the dark shadows whenever they're together. They have to be careful, so careful. If they're ever caught together by anyone other than a human sympathizer, they'll both be killed.

During her days, she keeps to her own kind, the ones who bask in being a mutant, but at night, she finds the human sympathizers for a few hours before it's so late, she can sneak off to find Kurt without being noticed At least, she hopes.]

end of second day/beginning of t h i r d d a y - closed to Kurt Weller
[Jane remembers something tiny at first, something about...FBI. Something about a place called Wonderland. At first it's wisps of fragments of memories, and after being reunited with Kurt where he lives in Genosha, she tries to tell him, asks if he knows, if he remembers something that isn't supposed to be. She remembers a place not here, a dress, dancing with him, stolen kisses. But then she remembers a place that's even different from that; mirrors that mocked them somehow, a homecoming together on the floor of a gym.

She tries to tell him what she knows as they hold onto each other, clinging to every moment they have because one day, eventually, their meetings will become less as people get more violent. So, she shifts focus at times to simply kiss him, be with him, revel in his touch while she can.]

[ He's glad she can sleep, that's all that matters. And he feels terrible for just laying around these past few days when he should have been up and moving around, dragging her out of this room. Tomorrow, he will. He'll be better for her. Tonight, he just holds her, not sleeping because she has so many nightmares and she needs him. ]

[ He's awake, of course, expecting this and ready to comfort her. He reaches out to rake his fingers through her hair, just kissing her forehead and trying to soothe her in some way. ]

[ It's true, he's not, but it doesn't really matter. ]

I'm fine.

No. Not when you need me.

[ He doesn't know how well anything from the closet will really work, but he worries that it could knock him out cold and leave her vulnerable. Everyone's body reacts differently. If she wakes in the middle of the night terrified, he can't help her. ]

[He smiles, and goes flush with sudden warmth. It's a rare, precious compliment for one of her kind of compliment one of his.]

That's very generous of you to say, Ma'am. Please, don't let me hold you up. I'm honored you've given me even this much time.

[ He'll see how he feels tomorrow. Right now, they at least just need to get through tonight. ]

Try and get back to sleep. I'm right here, I've got you.

[ He pulls the blankets around her, completely enveloping her. ]

[ Kurt is right there, of course, and just strokes his hand up and down her arm, kissing her forehead when she seems to be fearful as she wakes. ]

I'm here.

Yeah. Of course.

[ He gently helps her out of bed, gets them both undressed and into the shower. Like he did before, he washes her hair and skin for her, then wraps his arms around her, pressing soft kisses to her shoulder and the back of her head. He marvels at the fact that she can be alive like this, when she had been dead and gone, completely lifeless in his arms. He can't help the sudden surge of that horrible memory to the forefront of his mind, and he feels like he might be sick or pass out, or both. Closing his eyes tightly, he just takes deep breaths and tightens his hold on her. When he trusts himself to speak again, he clears his throat and speaks softly. ]

We should go walk on the beach. Get some fresh air.

Nothing's gonna happen. I'm with you. I won't let anyone hurt you this time.

[ He knows the promise is a hollow one since he had failed to protect her already. What good is he now? ]

[ He remembers Taylor again now, remembers promising to always keep her safe, and failing her, too. But he does 't want this burden on Jane, his own issues to deal with in the fallout of her death. He can't stop seeing her lifeless, broken body, and it makes him sick. Covering her hands, he just nods a little. ]

[ There's so much he wants to say but would never say to her. About how he sat there with her dead body for 24 hours, about how he laid on the ground with her, in a large pool of her blood. How he kept his clothes on for a whole day even though they were stained in her blood because it was her life. Her life stained on him.

But this isn't about him, he doesn't want it to be. This is about her pain and what she had to endure, and after a moment, he just methodically turns the shower off and helps her get dry and into clean clothing. ]

We need to go out now.

[ He's so strong for her, never really letting on how much pain he's in. He's good at being strong for people. That's about all he's good at. He knows she's scared, but she's such a strong person and he knows that strength she has is still in there somewhere and she'll find it again. He clings to her hand tightly, kissing her knuckles and leading her out. ]

You can do this. You need to do this.

[ He feels like the last person she really needs right now because she almost seems to be on the verge of a panic attack and he's not equipped to help in any way. He wants her to see how strong she is, that there's nothing to be afraid of, but any progress will be hindered by flashbacks. He wishes Borden were here, he'd know what to say or do. Kurt feels helpless, other than to step a little closer and do what he did the last time she was like this. He just presses her hand to his chest. ]

It's just us, Jane. He's not here. The people who took you aren't here.
