Like a biography on Taft is any easier to read. Jesus, Becket.

Chuck doesn’t hold any delusions that Raleigh wants anything to do with him beyond another presence in the room. He fully understands the want for silent company, the need for the companionship of another human being without actually having any interaction beyond reading twenty feet apart from one another. When Raleigh comes in, Chuck doesn’t look up. He doesn’t look up when Raleigh wanders around for a book, and he doesn’t look up when the older man finally settles down and starts to read.

They don’t have the best relationship. Raleigh’s a liability and Chuck is…well, Chuck, but together, in spaces like this, they coexist peacefully.

Until Raleigh opens his mouth and breaks the silence, that is.

Chuck finally looks up at him, expression startled, like he’s surprised that he’s being addressed.

“It’s a good read,” is all he says before glancing back down. “One of my favorites.”
