In response, the orange tabby planted its front paws on the edge of the shelf and leaned out toward Rick, nose bobbing in the manner of a dog scenting the air. As cats do, it leaned out so far it looked close to toppling right off, but by some miracle (or bizarre breaking of the laws of gravity, take your pick) it managed to stay balanced.
Another plaintive meow, louder this time. Clearly not afraid of people, this one.
The meow did more than just communicate Ember's interest in the stranger, though. Ember's owner, hearing it from the next section down, took it as a sign he might have finally found his quarry and headed in that direction. "Aha!" said Anders, stepping into view.
Probably the only time a tall man in mage robes would look normal in a library to someone from Earth was during a Harry Potter book launch, but the pleased smile he put on was rather universal in its relief and amusement. "There you are, you little rascal." And to Rick, he said, "I see my cat's befriended you."
Or was harassing another poor soul for pets and attention. Same thing, really.
