[OPEN/MINGLE LOG] New Year's Eve at the Youth Center!

Summary: The adults are celebrating New Year's Even in their own way, but what about the younger crowd?
The Story:

[The idea had actually been Coraline's, way back around Halloween. New Year's was pretty important back home, and in the wake of Wonderland's most recent event, Kanji was missing home more than usual. This would be the first New Year's he'd be spending without his mom. There was no shrine to visit here, and while he could still go around and offer New Year's greetings to his friends, he still felt like there should be something more.

Coraline's idea for a sundae bar seems like a pretty good solution. A lot of the adults in Wonderland will be ringing in the new year with alcohol, but that didn't mean the younger crowd had to miss out entirely. It's nothing like the traditions he would have observed back home, but-- since he wasn't at home, maybe doing something totally different was the way to go.

He has to ask Coraline for her expertise, not exactly knowing what goes into putting together a sundae bar, but he helps with the legwork and the lifting. By the time evening rolls around, the youth center has been turned into an ice cream buffet with an extensive toppings bar, including candy that had been inspired by some of the treats that Dustin had handed out to people for Christmas. Once everything is set up, he sends a text out across the network to grab people's attention-- can't have a party without people!]

Yo, Wonderland! Too young to drink? Youth center's got all the ice cream you can eat, come ring in the New Year right!

[Or, you know. By sending yourself into sugar shock.]

[ The closets are back to being much more festive, and by now she's feeling way more well-rested. When Kanji remembered the ice cream party she suggested months ago, Coraline was surprised, but pleased as punch!

So she's one of the first to arrive to help set up, dressed up a little (because it's new years) in a pistachio green tulle skirt with a big satin bow, a strawberry pink camisole, fuzzy 'Sweet Cream' cardigan sweater, Neopolitan-colored striped stockings, and ... somewhat inexplicably among all the girlish pastels, an Indiana Jones fedora with a New Year's crown perched precariously on top.

There are balloons to blow up and streamers to hang, bowls to fill up with candy, and finally a waffle bowl to load up with her first round of sweet creations, piled high with whip and chocolate sauce and extra cherries. It feels much more like a celebratory holiday now, and less like fighting to stay awake till gifting-time.

But as people drop in, she quick to scramble up from her beanbag chair, all bright smiles and a welcoming wave, eager to invite the mansion's kids (and kids at heart)] to a fast-paced cardgame or a silly round of pictionary.

[Clementine is too young to drink even if she's... definitely had sips of stuff before. It was gross but the burn that followed was nice. The apocalypse tends to throw all those laws out the window. She's hesitant about going to the party. Mostly because she doesn't know what she's doing. She forgot how to be a kid between killing walkers and shooting people. The last time she went to a party, it was a sleepover at her best friend's, and she was seven. That girl is probably dead now, and Clementine is older now, much older than her years.

She shifts a bit awkwardly on her feet as she steps inside the center. She asked Iris to help her find something to wear, and Iris was patient and caring enough to stay and carefully help her something she felt comfortable in and liked. She's even wearing a dress for the first time since she was nine, and she's also got her gun on her but she doesn't go anywhere without it. It'd be like leaving a limb behind.

The girl with the blue hair has a bright smile though. Clementine smiles lightly back, winding one hand around her arm, in a slightly nervous gesture.]

What's pictionary?

[Once Minato received Kanji's text, he had to go and join the party. New Year's did mean so much to him at home, and especially now, after what he had experienced at his last New Year's Eve and Day. He also couldn't pass up the opportunity to go and have some ice cream too.

It took him a while to find the place since it wasn't one of the standard rooms around the Mansion, but he made his way there all in one piece. He liked all of the decorations as they were so festive and he made a mental note that he could come back here later for everything else the Youth Center had to offer.

Right now he's at the sundae bar, taking a look at everything available to eat. It was hard to decide what to eat first since it all looked so good. What ice cream flavor first, what toppings first, it was all a difficult decision. He would definitely go and mingle with people though since that was the point of a party too and even he knew that.]

[Kanji doesn't quite know what to do as far as wearing something seasonally appropriate, but he's settled for pulling a hoodie with a snowman on it over his clothes. Once people have started to show up and make themselves comfortable, he seeks out Coraline, grinning broadly.]

Great idea you had, here. People are really diggin' it!

Hey, Minato-kun!

[Kanji smiles broadly, approaching Minato by the toppings bar. He's been getting a little bit better, remember to keep things casual between them. He has to remind himself from time to time, but at least he's dropped the reflexive 'senpai.']

Glad you came!

[A New Years party sounds pretty awesome to Naoki, especially if there's ice cream to eat. Like Kanji, this is nothing like what he's used to doing for New Years, but that's part of what makes him excited to participate. If he can't visit a shrine and give the usual New Years greetings, ice cream comes in as a good second choice.

When he spots Coraline - and she's easy to spot in that outfit - he makes his way over with a wave.]

What's up with the hat?

[Things had been strange for Souji lately. Some things had been so normal, like exchanging gifts with Minato or talking to Philip, and some things, like what was going on with Frisk, had been so out of the norm that he was left feeling bewildered.

A party like this one was a good distraction, and seeing his friends was a good remedy. He was relieved to find Minato lingering near the sundae bar and went to greet him.]

Hey.

[He looked down at the bar as well. There really were a lot of choices. He might as well try as many as he could.]

Thanks for setting it up. You're good at this.

[Like really good. Kanji thought of everything for this sundae bar, and it's pretty amazing. There's everything here that he could think of.]

Did you have some already?

[How could Riley say no? When she got the text, she had packed up and headed out pretty much immediately. It's mostly because Kanji had said it was going on, but also, how can she say no to parties? How can she say no to ice cream?

So that's why she can be found milling around looking for people to talk to or standing by the ice cream bar with a bowl and trying to decide what she wants first (though she's hesitating most by the chocolate, because chocolate.) Either way, she looks starstruck and can't stop smiling because of how happy she is.]

Hi.

[Minato still had his waffle cone bowl in a cup and with some ice cream in it, but with no toppings yet. He couldn't decide.]

I should make a decision though before the new year.

[Since going into a new year while undecided couldn't be a good sign. He was reminded of another, albeit world-altering, decision he had to make on this day too.]

Still deciding?

[Minato was still too although he was probably on his second bowl right now. Can't ever get enough of ice cream. And any occasion to eat it was a good one. He can't not try all the possibilities either.]

There's plenty of time.

[Even if Minato couldn't decide by then, it would have been fine. Time stopped in Wonderland, after all. He thought even this kind of landmark date didn't mean as much as it should have.]

It's too bad we can't go to a shrine.

[He'd enjoyed it last year. Tatsuhime Shrine with his friends. He was sure Minato had gone with his friends as well, even though their New Years had been...quite different.]

Didn't do it all on my own. It was Coraline's idea, an' we did the setup together. I've never been to anything like this, but I thought it'd be fun.

[It's not like what they would have done at home at all, but maybe that's better. Makes them miss home a little less.]

Got my first cone, but you can bet I'm gonna go back for more. Who's gonna stop us, right?

Dustin gave it to me for Christmas! [She beams, adjusting the brim so that it's cocked] It's for adventuring. Like Indiana Jones?

[ Go figure, say you like exploring and mention that your last name's Jones to a kid obsessed with epic movies, and certain associations are gonna stick. Still, she wants him to know that she really liked the gift, so she's wearing it straight away.]

Did you find some good toppings? I think there's strawberry pop rocks.

[ She lifts a hand cheerfully for a high-five as he nears.]

I used to get excited for staying up late every year, but after all the Christmas stuff, a full real night's sleep sounds... really good.

We'll see, though! Time flies when there's games.

It's the party game when someone has to draw a word, and then the other people guess what it's supposed to be?

[ She explains, laying out handheld whiteboards with dry-erase colored markers and a stack of game cards.

This girl seems a bit shy, so Coraline's resolved to go out of her way to be extra-accomodating.]

Like charades, but with doodles- Or I guess we could just play some charades too, if everybody's a terrible artist?

Did you get some ice cream yet?

[Maybe a bit too dramatically:]

I'm paralyzed with indecision!

[Oh yeah! The bologna sandwich kid. Naoki thinks he's pretty funny.]

It looks good. [Even with the crown on top.] You look ready to go.

[He sits down cross-legged next to her on the floor, even if he hasn't exactly been invited, his ice cream in one hand. It doesn't have pop rocks on it, but it does have gummi bears.]

Really? I have to look for them next time. [A smile.] I'm planning to eat ice cream until there isn't any left or I feel sick.

[He's a little old for that kind of thing, but whatever, the last couple of weeks have sucked.]

Thanks! [ She fluffs her skirt. The rest of her outfits more fit for parties than adventures, but she doesn't mind being a little outlandishly mismatched.]

I thought maybe we could roll character sheets for his dungeons and dragons game, tonight. If he shows up. [ What is she saying? It's Dustin, and there's a whole table overloaded with candies and snacks to top ice cream with... He'll be here any minute, she's sure.]

... I mean, I don't think you should eat yourself sick, 'cause that's no fun way to start off a new year, but there's lots. Have plenty.

What do you do for New Years Eve in Japan?

[Kanji is doing his best to make the most of tonight, using it as an opportunity to push himself to be a little more social with the younger crowd in Wonderland. He's lingering near the toppings bar as he finishes up the last of a waffle cone, looking satisfied with the turnout. Really, for the first party he's helped to throw, he thinks it's turned out pretty well.

He'll be available for the duration of the evening, eventually eating his fill and collapsing onto one of the couches in the conversation pit to unwind.]

Sounds like fun. I'd play with you.

[Clementine smiles, folding her arms across her chest loosely if only to have something to do with her arms, which isn't waiting to reach for her gun or something. She hasn't done much drawing recently, but she used to really love it and Iris gave her a whole set which she's almost too afraid to touch. Maybe it'll help her practice, get her back into it.]

No, not yet. I just arrived. Any recommendations? Looks like a huge bar.

Dungeons and dragons, huh? I've never played a role playing game like that one. It might be interesting.

[Maybe sick was an exaggeration, but Naoki is definitely eating a lot of ice cream tonight.]

At home? [He eats a bite of ice cream, breaking off a part of his waffle cone bowl to use as a spoon (although he has one of those as well).] On New Year's Eve we eat soba. On the first, you're supposed to keep from stressing or getting angry, since it's supposed to set the tone for the whole year. Then, between the first and the third, you're supposed to visit a shrine.

[Greg's bowl is getting a little out of hand. In a way it's almost impressive. But it's going to hit a breaking point sooner or later. Here's hoping someone stops him before he adds the marshmallow that broke the camel's back!]

[As much as Sirius is most definitely going to drink at some point in the night, he realizes that to many he still at least looks like a kid. And it isn't like he doesn't like ice cream, of course. So he decides to make a sundae and mill around, say hi to some people. He's surprised to see how many of the people who've arrived are actually teenagers. Might as well make some more friends, right? ~~If James couldn't escape~~...

Sirius settles on a couch across from Kanji and takes a mouthful of ice cream, firing off a little wave as he swallows.]

'lo. You're Kanji, right? One of Souji's mates?

Me neither, [ Coraline admits, shrugging up her shoulders. ] but he said he'll show me how!

Soba? [ She's not entirely sure what Soba is. ]

That's like... comfort food for you, then, maybe? So ice cream's... sort of like that too! New Years is a big party, but the day after you just relax... sounds about right! Some people make resolutions- promises to eat healthier, or exercise more, or get better grades, or keep your room clean?

(Boring stuff, if you ask me.)
