Because they don't want to lose one more thing to the friend he always wished he'd had, have one more little bit of identity peeled off of them and stuck under the "Frisk was actually the only one here" umbrella that timeline in particular huddled beneath.
Because they feel sick knowing that when Frisk takes that away from Chara, they'll also take away "one last threat to everyone's happiness," apply it to themselves even if "let Frisk be happy" chases right on its heels.]
