when all of your flaws and all of my flaws
Who: Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, and Wanda Maximoff
Where: The hedge maze
When: 06/01
Rating: PG-13
Summary: After a week-long trip home that was more like a year to them, these three Avengers have a lot to talk about. (Warning for Civil War spoilers!)
The Story:
Falling asleep the night after Bucky went into a much longer sort of hibernation had felt near to impossible. The sheets in Steve's guest quarters in the Wakandan facility had been too soft. The mattress had molded around his body, making him feel like he was floating instead of laying on something solid. He'd tossed and turned for a while, and then eventually drifted off.
When his eyes open again, he's standing, it's daylight, and he's surrounded by green.
Steve stumbles against his best instincts, ending up pressed against a wall of said green. He draws a breath deep into his lungs as his mind scrambles to explain away what just happened. Then he realizes that he's in a hedge maze, and he's only ever been in one hedge maze in his life.
All the memories rush back in, just as they had before, pressing out against his skull. Wonderland.
Not again.
Steve thinks back to what had been going on when he was last here, what feels like a year ago to him. He'd died for his first time during an event and had been doing his best to cope with that. He'd gone to Evelyn's party. And then he'd gone home, most of it spent training the new team. And then Laos, and the Accords, and the fight in Berlin, and the fight in Siberia...
What if Tony had gone back too?
Spurred by that thought, Steve falls into a jog, aiming to find his way out of this maze as quickly as possible.

She turned a corner, her direction heading purposefully for the garage...
...and stopped short when she found herself in a row of greenery instead.
Much like Steve, the memories came rushing back to her, earning a soft curse of frustration as she looks around to get her bearings. A glance upwards gives her a heading and she starts off again, lips thinned into a displeased line. This wasn't what she'd had in mind when she'd planned on going somewhere the government couldn't find her.
She rounds another corner and comes face to face with Steve with an abruptness that almost has them colliding, had she not stopped short at the last moment, eyes wide and startled a moment as they lift to his face, but she tries quickly to disguise it as she takes in the state he's in.
"You too?"

The last time he had seen Natasha had been in that hangar when she'd chosen to help him and Bucky escape. Steve's all too aware that she hadn't had to make that call. He's grateful that she'd understood, although in the end letting them go to Siberia hadn't been the right choice either. Not that she could have known that. None of them could have -- they'd all just played right into Zemo's hands.
It occurs to Steve that he'll have to tell Natasha everything that happened, assuming she doesn't already know somehow. He nods at her question.
"The Accords? The fight at the airport? You remember all that, right?"
She'd been frustrated with him, and it's not like Steve could even blame her. She'd also realized that there was no changing his mind.

Which should tell him where she's from, at least. Or when.
"You?"
no subject
"A little further than that, but not by much. Still, there's some stuff I need to catch you up on." Especially if Tony had also gone back, as they're going to run into him eventually.
"Here isn't the place for it," Steve decides as he takes a look around them. While it might be a stalling method, it's also true. They should get back to the mansion at least.

She feels unsteady on her own feet as she goes, but she doesn't trust herself to levitate, not when she's been isolated with her powers on lockdown and feels worn through. Relief washes over her when she turns around another bend in the maze and finds her teammates standing there, and she can sense that they're just as disoriented as she is--
They'd all gone home, and they'd all come back. She grimaces, clenching her hands into fists at her sides as she approaches.
"Are you both alright?"
no subject
"We're fine. Are you alright?"
no subject
She'd been collared because of him. There's no way around that.
Steve rushes over on Natasha's heels, brow furrowing as he sees the red markings around Wanda's neck. That answers his question pretty succinctly, then.
"I got you out. And the others," Steve insists, staring her down with a face full of worry. "You remember, right?"
no subject
There's a dangerous edge of temper that flares when she sees the markings on Wanda's throat and it's not hard to guess the cause. Not with how frightened people had been. She knows people far too well not to be able to connect the dots on her own. Especially from what she knows of Ross already. The fact that Tony had let this happen after she left...
No. That's not right. His hands had been firmly tied as well. He wouldn't be hasty to get them dirty when he was trying to play by the rules. Which is why Steve would be the one to go after Wanda. After Sam, after Clint, after Scott. She'd known they'd been detained, but this...
She turns away, a mixture of guilt and fury flickering in her gaze as she murmured something quiet and fervent in Russian, a rare slip for her, but this entire thing had been an unpleasant mess from start to finish. If this could even be considered 'finished'.
"We need to compare notes," she states after a moment, trying to get a better grasp on her own control, forcing herself to turn back and meet their gazes evenly. "We need to figure out what each of us know, and then we need to figure out what we're saying to the others."
And seeing if any others had been sent home with them, but that required reaching out to the rest of the team to announce their return.

"I remember," she says quietly, and her voice creaks slightly from disuse, from sitting in that box for days, unwilling to speak a word for fear of being violently rebuked once more. She looks between the two of them, and while she wants to say more, the words won't come. She's never been the most verbose member of the team, but especially now, especially when even the slightest noise had earned her a shock because of the people watching over her being fearful of what she might do--
She nods again, glancing towards the mansion.
"There are better places to talk than here."
no subject
With all of them looking and feeling a little shellshocked, Steve has to agree that any further conversation could wait until they'd settled somewhere inside the mansion. Somewhere relatively private, if possible.
He isn't Captain America anymore, but old habits die hard, and that's what has him turning toward Natasha, gaze sharp and mouth set.
"Can you find us the quickest route out of here?"
no subject
"I think so, although I might need you to give me a boost to check our progress out a time or two if I get us turned around," she supplies, before turning and heading off to their left.
They do get turned around a time or two, but not badly, and it's not long before they find themselves at the entrance, staring up at the large house.
Natasha's not sure if she's relieved to see it or not, at the moment.
She turns and glances at Steve. "Your room?"
no subject
She can pretend to be normal for a little while. With the memory of the prison still so fresh, it's not hard to find the inspiration to do so.
"That might be best," is all she offers, her voice quiet and even. "Dodger will be missing you, anyway."
no subject
"I think we'd be better off going to one of the tea rooms," he says as he leads them inside. He isn't in charge of them anymore, but some habits die hard.
He looks over his shoulder at them as he heads for the stairs. "I want to make sure we're not interrupted, and people are probably looking for us. Let's just talk everything over and then we can announce that we're back."
