Who: Bucky and anyone
Where: In space
When: Backdated to the event
Rating: Will update as needed
Summary: All things space.
The Story:
one: the silversun strip
[He’s allowed himself to fall into a bit of a rut. The same routine. The same two people, one of them being a cat, for company. He likes it, makes him happy, but he knows he can’t rely on that forever. He needs to get out there and the events, even when they’re bad, can be a way for him to meet other people. So Bucky finds the most touristy place he can and walks around for a while.
First the arcade, where he challenges someone to one of the shooting games; it almost feels like cheating, but he admits from the start that he’s okay with a gun. After a few hours there, he ends up in the casino, playing a game of roulette before he gets bored with that and heads towards the arena. He hovers around the viewing areas, not really wanting to compete, but hoping someone familiar will come by soon.]
two: flying cars
[Bucky’s no stranger to the concept, but the successful application of a vehicle that can fly - yeah, Howard Stark never quite pulled that one off. It leaves him a little nostalgic, remembering that night. When the car had hovered off the ground, it was as if he’d been thrown into the future. He didn’t even mind when smoke had billowed up and it’d stopped working. Stark left that particular invention fall to the wayside for others, but knowing what he had helped with, Bucky can’t complain.
So he rents one. He’s about to start it up and take it for a spin, when he sees someone he knows.]
Wanna ride?
[He’s a good pilot. No experience with this particular craft, but part of the fun is learning.]
three: wildcard
[Bucky is available for any of the event shenanigans. If either of the options above don’t fit with your character, feel free to pick something. I’m super flexible and would love to get Bucky out and about. I can be messaged through my journal or through
barebone.]

Two!
He doesn't know what footing they are on with each other after their last talk, but he wants to live this event to the fullest.]
If you're driving, absolutely! I don't think I'm legally allowed to anymore.
[He says this with a bright and cheery grin, stepping right up to Bucky quickly.]
no subject
[After Mettaton has settled inside, strapped in, and looking at him, Bucky offers a sheepish smile.]
First, don't really know how to fly this thing, but I think I can manage.
[He narrows his eyes.] Second, why ain't you legally allowed anymore? What'd you do. [He's sure it's a good story.]
Ready?
[Without any real fear, Bucky begins sorting through all the controls, checking to see what each does before hitting the right combo. The craft raises steadily into the air and his soft smile turns into a confident smirk.]
no subject
That's fine, darling; You're not trying to hotwire this car to do anything it shouldn't, so I trust we'll be ok.
[Mettaton's grin turns mischievous, the sides of his mouth quirking up in mirth.]
Well... I don't know how much you've been paying attention to the news on this Citadel during the event, but I had a very involved hand in that skycar crashing into the Presidium lawn.
[Mettaton's eyes widen a little as the car rises but he relaxes into his chair, enjoying the confident smirk on Bucky's face.]
Well look at you! 99 years old and yet you've got a great grasp of future tech right off the bat!
no subject
[Mostly he'd been distracted by everything else and he hadn't expected to see anybody that he knows on the television here. He tilts his head in Mettaton's direction.]
What's an involved hand mean exactly?
[Bucky wants to know, he's curious. Besides, they're trying to figure out how to be friends again and one of the sure things he knows to do is learn about each other.]
Well, I'm 100 now. In all that time I should have some things figured out.
no subject
Really? You thought someone like me wouldn't end up on the news, one way or another?
[It's... nice to not have Bucky assume he'd do that automatically. It's not to say he dislikes it when other people do but it speaks volumes to Bucky's impression of him that it's not the first thing he thinks. It truly reminds him of how special their interactions and their friendship has been.
...He really hopes he doesn't screw this up.]
It means I was the one driving the car at hundreds of miles per hour as C-SEC was in hot pursuit of me and my friend.
[Mettaton blinks and looks at Bucky, surprised.]
Wait, you're 100 now? When?? Goodness darling, did I miss your birthday?
no subject
Weren't you worried about getting hurt?
[Now he's frowning, because come on Metta. Bucky already worries about him, with everything that's happened, and now he'll add possible death in car chase to the list. With a soft hum, he presses some buttons and starts the car.]
Not long ago. March 10th. Didn't really do much.
[He's not into the idea of a party and he doesn't like to burden anyone.]
no subject
I didn't give myself enough time to think of getting hurt. Though I had backup plans.
[Plans he made .5 seconds before things went into major trouble, and a little too late seeing as Sans had had to teleport them both out of the car before they were killed.
Mettaton looks shocked for a moment, then sad.]
Oh Bucky, I'm sorry! If I had known I would have gotten you something, at least!
[If he had known well enough in advance, he might have tried to set up a whole party for him. Bucky is the kind of man who deserves a huge celebration in his name, people laughing and singing and dancing in his honor.]
...I hope it was enjoyable for you and you didn't spend it alone.
[He probably didn't. He probably spent it with Steve. Mettaton looks away and out the car window. He doesn't want to think too hard on that.]
no subject
[He'd be upset if Mettaton got hurt. He only wishes Mettaton would show himself a little bit more care, but he knows that's the cat calling the kettle black. He does it, too. Jumps without thinking first.]
It's alright. You still can, you know.
[He glances over, winking playfully.]
There's no expiration dates on birthday gifts.
[Bucky almost, almost, mentions Steve before he catches himself. It's just not something he's used to keeping to himself. Steve's been his friend his whole life, but it isn't fair, to anybody, to bring him up right now. Mettaton is trying to make this work between them and Bucky doesn't want to screw it up.]
Would've been better if I'd gotten to see you.
[And he means that, too. If only the mirrors and events and his own issues didn't get in the way.]
no subject
[He laughs, relaxing a bit more.]
Besides, Sans had my back. He's a good friend and he would've done his best to make sure I didn't get hurt.
[No matter how strange things between them have gotten, he's confident that Sans will be there for as long as Mettaton is there for him. Which honestly will probably only be to the end of this event, since Mettaton will need to pull away after this delightful vacation, but that's for a few days from now.
Mettaton's mouth turns up in delight at Bucky's playful joke and he nods.]
You are absolutely right! I'll have to find you something wonderful for your birthday. It could never match your caliber but it can come close!
[Mettaton's smile falls just a little, his eyes softening to a gentle bitter sweetness. Would he have even been able to see him if he knew when his birthday was? Probably not. As much as he would have loved to, he's needed to pull away for awhile now. Perhaps it's for the best he missed it.]
...Well, I suppose we're making up for that now, hm? Here you have me all to yourself.
[...that came out a little more flirty than he intended. Mettaton has enough shame to at least look slightly contrite at letting that slip out.]
no subject
Wouldn't matter what it was. If you gave it, I'd like it.
[The truth, too much maybe, but he's got a weak spot for Mettaton and he can't seem to help himself. He supposes that's part of the problem. He wants the things Mettaton had given him before, the way they talked and flirted, held each other. He still wants all of that. Bucky realizes that it means there's something wrong with him, deep down, if he would let that all happen again while still being with Steve. He just doesn't see it as being dishonest or stepping out on his guy. Bucky'd never let it go too far, but he can see why Mettaton doesn't want it to continue. It hurts him, Bucky hurts him.
He's a selfish man. He's selfish and doesn't deserve the love that he gets from either of them. Bucky certainly doesn't deserve to have two people like them having feelings for him. He doesn't but he wants it, needs it. He doesn't trust people to touch him, but he likes it when Mettaton does. That they could curl up next to each other and it doesn't have to mean anything but it means a lot to Bucky.]
Do I?
[His mouth curves up into a flirty smirk, brow raised.]
How about we go a little faster?
[He shifts the car forward.]
no subject
That's sweet, Bucky, but don't let me off the hook. You deserve the very best in presents. Though one could certainly argue my presence is the best gift of all.
[It feels so good to do this again. To slip back into this banter, to fluff up his own ego and know that Bucky will give as good as he gets. It's so easy to pretend that they'll be in the car for forever and never have to go back to Wonderland. Maybe then he'll never have to let this friendship wither again.
He wants to reach out and take his hand. That could crash the car though, wouldn't it? Maybe a hand on an arm. A casual touch. That can be casual, can't it?
...Perhaps not as casual as it should be.]
Do you see any other handsome robots sitting in this car?
[Oh, but how he missed that smirk of his...
Mettaton goes to say something else but instead gasps a little as the car picks up speed and Mettaton's eyes widen in delight as his mouth forms a perfect 'o'.]
Do you have an plans for a destination, or are we going to cruise around the station?
[He's fine either way. As long as he's with Bucky, he's fine with anything.]
no subject
No, just the one.
[He winks, pleased with Mettaton's reaction. There wasn't much he could do with the car to make things more exciting, except for speeding everything up.]
Not really. Somewhere specific you wanna go?
[Not knowing the area meant Bucky was winging it. Which he'd usually do anyways, so that wasn't anything special.]
Anythin' you wanna do, I'm in.
[He trusted Mettaton and the robot knew his story, his background. He wouldn't put Bucky into a situation that hurt or triggered him, not on purpose.]
no subject
The one and only! How absolutely scandalous, to be with a celebrity alone like this.
[The robot looks out the window and considers the options. The first thing that comes to mind is the top of the Presidium Tower like he went with Sans, but he thinks that if he attempts that again it'll only cause trouble for them both, so he shelves that thought pretty quickly. No, he doesn't really want to leave the car yet but he does want a pretty sight to match the pretty sight of Bucky driving.]
Mmm, I'm fine with going anywhere, but I know the Silversun Strip is particularly beautiful. That might be a scenic place to cruise.
no subject
The problem is, though, that he doesn't want to stop. He wants their friendship back. He doesn't have many people he's close to. Bucky just has to remind himself that he doesn't have to stop, only be more responsible about what he says and does.]
Yeah? Then we'll head there.
[They aren't too far away, he doesn't think, so he aims the car in that general direction.]
How've you been?
no subject
He even has a working knowledge of the traffic laws of the Citadel and it's quite astounding.
Then he asks a question that Mettaton... probably shouldn't answer honestly.]
I've been well. What about you?
[A gentle volley back into his court.]
no subject
[After a few seconds, he hits some buttons and the car goes to auto pilot, hovering in a traffic free area with a pretty view. If Mettaton asked, he'd have to admit that he was winging it. He'd played around with the buttons to see what they did and then he guessed at how to make it through the city.
It worked for him.]
You tell me and I'll tell you.
no subject
It's been... it's been hard. There's so much for me to do and yet I refuse to do pretty much any of it and it is taking its toll. I'm unsure of where I stand with many of my friends and I know I need to do right by them but I still cling to them as much as I can because I don't have the strength to be better yet.
[Bucky is one of the friends who suffers the most from this. Mettaton tries to push him away but keeps coming back and he knows he needs to stop this but he really, really does not want to.]
I'll have been here for almost a year now in the next few months. I didn't think I would be trapped here this long.
[He's silent for a moment then smiles ruefully and looks at Bucky.]
Your turn.
no subject
[Briefly, he wonders if it's some form of shyness, but that doesn't sit right. Mettaton has always been flirty and charming and outgoing. So if it wasn't social anxiety that kept him from doing the things he wants to do and keeps him from doing right by his friends.
Bucky wants to be more involved in Mettaton's life, but he doesn't want to push. He doesn't know if the robot is ready for any of that, so he stays away.]
I didn't think I would be either, but I don't mind. I've got a life here I wouldn't have had back home.
[He'd still be in T'Challa's cryochambers, asleep.]
I'm trying to let people in. [Like he did Mettaton.] I don't talk to very many people in Wonderland.
no subject
[But all of it comes to his mirror. It all comes to his mirror and trying to be more detached like him.
He leaves it at that, vague and in the air. He can't tell Bucky. He already tried once to get it out of him and he can't let him get so close again.]
Yes... there are some aspects of Wonderland that are appealing... there are people here that I wouldn't know back home and would dearly miss.
[It's a roundabout way of saying he'd miss Bucky if he was gone, but it's the only way he can say it without breaking more of his "rules."]
I'm glad you're trying. You need more friends. More friendly people who see you and care about you. You deserve that.
two!!
It doesn't matter. Out here in space (or the illusion of it, at least), these things actually exist. Steve's looking for an approximation of a hoverbike to give a spin, seeing how that's more his speed, but that's when he hears a familiar someone calling to him from the rental bay.
Bucky's already gotten his hands on one of the flying vehicles and looks ready to give it a try (they didn't even ask for a license?), and Steve can't help but look a little incredulous. They've never been ones to skirt around danger or thrills, but... ]
You sure that's a good idea, buddy? [ What happens if they crash? Although Steve only maintains that uncertain expression for a few seconds. ] I mean, I guess we didn't get much of a chance to celebrate your birthday, so...
[ If this is what Bucky wants to do, Steve's ready to come along for the ride. ]
no subject
He can't help but smile at Steve though. Warm and fond, affection loosening the seemingly always tense line of his shoulders, softening his brows. He's a sap. Through and through. He can't even find it in himself to try and hide it. They both know he is, no point in trying to be smooth.]
Probably not.
[He tucks his lower lip into his upper, worrying it with his teeth as he mulls it over. Bucky didn't want Steve to get hurt, but he knew it took a lot to do that.]
That's not important. [His birthday, that is. Bucky waves it off.] How about we give it a go and if I can't manage, then we can do somethin' else.
[He raises a brow, patting the seat next to him.]
Besides, never really got the chance to cruise around town with my best guy.
no subject
Steve can tell that Bucky is on the fence about this now, and it hadn't been his intention to actually talk him out of it so much as give him a hard time. Especially when it looks like he's having a legitimately good time; Steve would never want to get in the way of that, given its rarity.
Already halfway to climbing into the passenger seat, Steve pauses the moment Bucky says "best guy." It's something he hasn't been called in a while, probably not since before Bucky's memories got wiped by Wonderland, and his chest flutters while his stomach tightens.
After that brief holdup, he pulls himself the rest of the way into the car and straps himself in. Perfectly safe, right? ]
You better not disappoint now. [ Steve smiles crookedly and winks at Bucky as he braces himself for the ride. ]
no subject
Rolling his eyes, he hits a few more of the controls.]
That's a lot of pressure, pal.
[It takes a few minutes, a lot of buttons are pressed, but he manages to get it started and in the air. The ride is.. bumpy, nowhere near smooth at first, but he doesn't hit anybody and after a little while, they're coasting through the air. Slowly.
Mumbling, quietly and mostly to himself-]
Better not make any grandpa jokes, Steve.
no subject
Good thing Howard had been around to fix up the bike every time.
This is a far cry from all of that, and Steve is patient as Bucky figures out all of the controls and eventually gets them airborne. It's a surreal thing to be floating over everything in a car, offering a stunning view, but it's true that their pace is relaxed, to say the least.
Steve catches Bucky's words and laughs to himself, shaking his head. ] I'll leave that to everyone else. It's overdone. [ He's tired of the jokes too, Buck. ] Is there any way to speed up, though? This can't be its top speed. [ He taps his fingers on the side of the car. ]
no subject
Then he's asking to speed the car up and now that he's not as worried about wrecking the thing, he doesn't see the problem indulging both their needs to go a little faster. Or a lot. Knowing Steve.]
Sure thing.
[Bucky presses a lever forward, slow and steady, leaning back in the seat as it quickly accelerates to a speed that requires him to focus on moving in and out and around other cars.]
How's this? [He glances at Steve, tossing him a quick wink.] Do you think they hand out tickets here?
[Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes - breaking the rules in every galaxy.]
no subject
Better. [ The wind's whipping through Steve's hair and it feels great. He can't help but lean out of his seat a little to look below them and see the Citadel in all its glory from above.
At Bucky's question, Steve sits back and shrugs. ] No idea. There's gotta be some rules. [ It's not like anyone had asked Bucky for a license, although that doesn't mean they're not required. ]
But hey, so long as we don't crash into anything I don't think anyone's gonna bother us.
[ Even if they did get themselves into trouble, the event will be over in a matter of days. There shouldn't be any lasting consequences. ]
no subject
Bucky smiles, speeding the car up a little more.]
Famous last words, Rogers.
[Then the police arrive to take them in.
Shaking his head, he turns the car down a less packed area of the city, slowing back down and gesturing towards Steve's side. The first time he'd taken the car for a spin, he'd come this way. It was nice. Peaceful.]
Kinda pretty, all the colors. Not as many people.
[With one hand on the wheel, he reaches over and pats Steve's thigh with the other, wiggling his fingers in a 'gimme' motion. Obviously, he wants to hold Steve's hand as they cruise. It's kinda their thing now.]
no subject
[ So long as his famous last words aren't something like "oops" or "I've totally got this," Steve thinks he'll be fine. Either way, he knows that Bucky is only teasing him and that the danger presented by their current irresponsibility isn't much. Not compared to some of the other pickles they've gotten themselves into, anyway.
Steve doesn't mind when they slow down to appreciate the scenery above a quieter part of the Citadel. Heck, some might even call it romantic, if they want to go that route.
Apparently Bucky does, with the way that he motions for Steve's hand. They might as well be making out in the back seat of the car at the drive-in or something cheesy like that. Except this is way better, and Steve reaches out for them to intertwine fingers, palm against palm.
He speaks out as he looks up toward the sky, swirling sunset colors and not-so-distant stars making it a spectacular view. ] You know, as far as dates go, I think this one is pretty good.
[ It might even count as their first "official" one, given that everything they've done at the mansion has been fairly lowkey. ]
no subject
Besides, Bucky likes holding Steve's hand. It's intimate in a newer way and the contact reminds him of all the good times before that they've done it. The sweetness of it.]
I've been thinking about that, Steve.
[Their 'dates'. There are some questions that have laid heavily on his mind but he hasn't found a good time to ask them. His eyes are out towards the horizon, thumb running across the side of Steve's hand.]
Would you wanna go on one? [Not just in their room.] I know we've been going slow, but Wonderland's been alright.
[He's not sure how to say that he's ready to do it. He'd held back before because paranoia was winning the internal battle he's always fighting with himself. It was still a contender, but he could manage it now.]
Figured if we went out, together, nothin' would happen and if it did, we'd make it through and try again. [They couldn't control events or the people around them, but still.] Be nice to do something. Unless you don't want to do that.
no subject
What's a little more amusing is how Bucky works up to asking Steve out on a date like he's worried that Steve's going to reject him. Especially given what they're doing. ]
I mean, as far as I can tell we're on one right now. [ Steve speaks the words casually as shrugs one shoulder, leaning further toward Bucky's side of the car, though the center console between them means they can't get as close as either of them would like. He squeezes his hand instead. ]
If you're talking about back at the mansion too, I'm sure that can also be arranged.
[ This seems more special given where they are, but Steve can see the importance of normalizing it back in more familiar surroundings too. Whatever Bucky wants to try, he's all for it. ]
no subject
[Bucky leans in and he can almost prop himself up against Steve's side, but the car's not really made for that, so they make do. He's also feeling particularly relaxed, given their current situation.]
I'd like that. [Oddly enough, he's beginning to think of Wonderland as home. He knows it's not the place, it's the people. It's the guy sitting right beside him.] Can I be real honest with you, Steve?
[He pauses, but it's brief. Not much time between words for his friend to say no, not that Bucky thinks he'd do that.]
I don't wanna go back. Not to Wonderland, but where we're from. [He keeps his gaze locked on the horizon, not focused but not looking at Steve either.] We didn't have this back there. And if leaving means forgetting, then I don't want that.
[It's romantic, right? Telling someone that they're something special while on an impromptu date in space.]
no subject
Because the thing is, "home" doesn't really exist for them anymore. It's something they can only find in their past, a place that's impossible for them to reach. The only thing that really makes them feel at home is being in each other's company, and if that's only possible in Wonderland, then Steve understand Bucky's view.
Back home, he has to be frozen away until they can fix whatever's been scrambled in his head. Steve's not in the best place either; there's nothing approaching the stability they have here. ]
I get what you're saying, I do. [ His grip on Bucky's hand remains firm. ] The world hasn't really been that kind to you back home anyway. Not that Wonderland is either, but... we're dealing with it together.
[ He sighs and leans back, shaking his head. ] It's not like we get to decide, though. [ And while Steve doesn't want to say it now, if he was given the choice to return home, he would do it. Wonderland is only a holding pattern. They can't enact any kind of difference here, and there's still plenty of work to be done back home. Living without any purpose beyond existing just doesn't suit him. ]

i've.... never been in a normal car before....
