[OPEN] Give me that thing I love (I'll turn the lights out)

Summary: It’s Mettaton’s One Year Anniversary Concert! Come on in and celebrate with him!
The Story:

It’s been a strange year for Wonderland’s favorite celebrity. He’s made friends and enemies, he’s seen things both strange and hauntingly beautiful and he’s had many laughs to fill his time. He never imagined he’d be here for an entire year but it seems his contract with this place isn’t expiring anytime soon.

So what better way to celebrate an anniversary than with a performance?

During the day on May 31st posters pop up all over the mansion, on pillars and walls and light fixtures and also some rose bushes in the gardens because of course. They all have one thing in common: beautiful gold typography advertising-

MTT’S GRAND ONE YEAR WONDERLAND ANNIVERSARY! COME ONE, COME ALL, TO ANOTHER SPECTACULAR MTT-BRAND CONCERT!

CELEBRATE A FANTASTIC YEAR WITH YOURS TRULY! DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY WITH QUALITY ENTERTAINMENT! TAKE A BREAK FROM THE MUNDANE TO SPEND A NIGHT SURROUNDED BY GLAMOUR! PARTY WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND GET AWAY FROM IT ALL!

FOOD AND DRINK WILL BE PROVIDED, AS ALWAYS! PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND SPECIES ARE WELCOME!

[Newt has rarely been appreciated for his magic, not since he was at Hogwarts, and it feels good. He won't deny that.]

Easier? Perhaps not, but I like the chances to practices. It's also a delight to be able to use my magic in front of others. So many years of hiding it, of making sure that no one knows what I'm, and being here in Wonderland and open about it is wonderful.

So certainly I can and do use them, but when I can use my own magic, I do. Just because I can.

I do hope you do. I will most certainly be there.

[And as long as he was in Wonderland, he would be, because he could be and it was so much fun.]

[The fact that it's an extra effort to produce these flowers, rather than go through the closet, makes Mettaton feel warm and special. Its an extra thought, a little more work, to make something for him and it's always nice to have someone step out of their way to make you smile.]

A lot of things that had to be secret back home can be in the open here. It's a nice side benefit to this place.

[Of course, some things still are secret here, but because they need to be, not because they are forced to be.]

It helps that there are a lot more people who use magic here than do not. It's not as odd to see spells around.

[People are much more accepting of monsters and robots here than he ever expected.]

I'll hold you to that, Newt! And if you're not there I will simply have to come find you and bring you here myself.

[He says it with a self-important air and then chuckles.]

How have you been, dear? Have you been keeping busy?

It truly is. I know so many dislike this place, but there's a lot of reasons that I like here. I'll have my life back eventually, but I'm happy to spend time here for a while.

Especially with the friends I'm making.

[He knows most wouldn't see it that way, but he's willing to look to the best he can while in this place.]

That is most certainly true. It almost feels like the magic users are in larger numbers than those who don't. That is so unique to me. Unique and wonderful.

[Newt can't help but to laugh at that.]

I'm holding you to that if I don't make it on my own. If he didn't, there was a reason for it, obviously.

I have been. Working on cataloging things here, mostly the creatures, and lately there've been quite a few changes. It's actually quite exciting. At least to someone like me.

[Newt has such a relaxed view of Wonderland, of his time here, and Mettaton wishes he felt the same way. While interacting with people here and the events have kept him occupied for the most part, he still longs to go home. Time is frozen and yet Mettaton still feels like his life is slipping by.]

Do you ever wonder if anyone from home will end up here with you?

[It's a sudden question but an interesting one in Mettaton's book. Would Newt's opinion on being stuck here change if someone he knew were to come with him?]

It really is. I once ran into a young mage who was practicing his magic out by the stables. The poor dear lit a good 8 foot radius on fire and scorched it all, but bless him, he tried. Barely anyone blinked an eye.

[He also disappeared shortly afterwards, he thinks. He hasn't seen him in a very long time. A pity.]

Good! That means I am now expecting you and Bucky at all of my shows in the future.

[Mettaton's good boys.]

Changes? What kind of changes have their been?

[To his knowledge, Wonderland hasn't changed all that much with its fauna.]

[That gives Newt pause. Certainly when Remus and James had been here, from his world but not his time, he gave thought to it but then there's so much more that comes with that.]

I've considered it but the truth is, I wasn't very close to anyone back home. I'm not close to my brother, and haven't had many friends. Recently I've become friends with a muggle, and not quite enemies with two witches. I think Jacob would positively love it here. He's a muggle who got dragged into our world and he loves it. I can't imagine how he would react here.

[But it would be beautiful, Newt was certain of that.]

Like your performance. He would have been clapping the loudest, trust me. Maybe one day he'll be here.

[Newt perks up at that.]</small. Bucky's a patron of your art as well? He and I actually come from the same time period, we've found. It's been nice knowing others that are familiar with the 1920s. I found beehives in the woods, and then there's been other smaller creatures I've found that I hadn't seen before. Perhaps I overlooked them but I was diligent.

Maybe one day! If he does ever show, you should introduce him to me. I'd be happy to meet any friends of yours.

[It would also be an interesting look into Newt's character he thinks. The kind of people you keep is very telling of who you are.]

As for the witches, here's hoping you three get along better in the future!

[Mettaton's relationship with Bucky has always been a wild ride, ups and downs and all arounds, but as of right now it seems to have settled. They're slowly falling back into being friends again and while other things in Mettaton's life keep trying to get in the way, he's secretly very grateful to still have the man in his life.]

He is, yes. And you're from the same time? That's wonderful! You both need more people who come from the same place. When did you meet him?

Oh I think you would find him delightful. I've never seen a muggle before Wonderland react so positively to our world. It gives me hope.

[A hope that is almost dashed then, Newt's nose wrinkling.]

I nearly got one of them killed. I saved her though! But yes, death penalty and all. Hopefully though, when I return, I'll have a chance to make it up to her.

Not entirely the same year but oddly about five years apart, which is the closest I've found while here, and I was in New York before coming here and Bucky is from Brooklyn. A part of New York that I actually went through... while hunting down one of my creatures that escaped.

He was looking for help with his cat, and we began talking then. Such a sweet kitten even if it does look so sad.

Almost killing someone is how I met one of the best people I've ever met, so I understand that feeling. You could get an amazing friendship out of near-murder!

[Most of Frisk's friends have tried to murder them at some point and at this time he's not too broken up about it. The past is the past, after all!

He chuckles fondly.]

Those creatures of yours seem to cause more trouble than their worth. It's fascinating how Wonderland can take us all from vastly different places and yet simultaneously have us all be so close.

Oh, yes! Sugar! She's such a sweet little thing. She and Bucky make such a cute pair.

[Perhaps it shouldn't make him smile but that answer from Mettaton certainly does get a smile from Newt. ]

Well then, here's hope that when I am returned to my world, things with Tina and Queenie turn out as well.

[He certainly wants them to, but he isn't one to hold his breath. Not after what they've been through.]

Perhaps they do, but I will give all I can to watch over them and care fort hem. They deserve that much.

He's a good person for her, and I'm always glad to see people that care about their animals. Sadly that's not always the case.

Anything is possible with enough charm and a winning smile!

[Hell, Frisk got a crush on him despite him threatening to electrocute them when they first met.]

...You really are one of a kind, Newt.

[He nods vigorously.]

Bucky will spoil that kitten rotten for as long as he has her. Sugar is going to be the most pampered cat in all of existence.

[That makes Newt chuckle, giving Mettaton a self-deprecating smile.]

Yes well, let's hope then I have other options, though thank you.

[He sees neither of those, though the world hasn't seen the man he feels he is in Wonderland either.]

I appreciate that. Here, and from you, I know that for the compliment it is.

Pets should be pampered. I feel that should be the point of their existence. In whatever ways make them happy.

[The fact that Newt knows him well enough to correctly interpret the compliment his words are is... almost staggering in a way. They've been friends for a little while now, haven't they? And they've gotten along so well. It makes his heart feel warm to be understood in this fashion. Even if that low level guilt of getting close to more people still lingers in the back of his mind.]

Oh absolutely. Darling and precious things, pets are. One of the most interesting and challenging things I have done with raising my child is teaching them how to take care of their rabbit... especially since I don't always know what to do.

[He chuckles a bit at that. He's found some books and things when he was really lost, but all in all he thinks they're doing a good job for Bun.]

[In many ways, Newt feels he understands many who aren't human in this world better than he understood muggles. They've been through more things than most muggles have. Things that mean they're less likely to misunderstand him, and vice verse.]

Wait, you haven't mentioned that. You have a child?

[Oh but he lights up at that.]

Are they... I mean, they're here? Maybe?

[Mettaton chuckles fondly, nodding.]

Yes! And no. Technically I didn't make them but Alphys did. She built a lot of little bots awhile back for a prank and one of them started gaining sentience. So she decided to give them to me. I've been raising them ever since.

[They're his pride and joy.]

The rabbit I have came from one of our residents who accidentally made a rabbit flood from one of the closets. She needed to get rid of the extras.

It just gained sentience? Oh my. Isn't that a marvel? Well, that is not at all surprising, you are such a wonderful person. I'm sure they'll grow to be the same. If they grow. You know what I mean, right?

[Science is still so new to him, but Newt is trying to learn as much as he can.]

Some have warned me about not asking for animals from the closet for exactly that reason. Does it happen often?

[Mettaton laughs at the stumbling of words, nodding.]

They are an incredible marvel and gift! They don't seem to be growing in size but they are certainly growing in awareness of the world around them. They're starting to understand puns now!

[Which, despite how small of an achievement that sounds, is quite the big step for an artificial intelligence.]

I think it happened more often when I first came here, but it has been awhile since the last big one I think.
