He isn't... We're not...

[ This is not going to plan. She tries to turn her attention back to sorting the weapons. ]

I'm not going to. He's looked out for me since I got here. I just want to return the favor.

You don't need to be. He gives a shit about you. That's enough to make it pretty easy.

[And Richie is watching for it. The girls that Seth tends to be attracted to cause them problems. Not that he could really talk, considering his first girlfriend, aka the crazy demi-goddess, but girls tended to be a problem rather than helpful when it came to the brothers.

They had enough shit to worry about.]

People around us tend to either screw us or we screw them. That's just the way it goes.

[ Chloe would be livid to be thought of as just another girl bringing a problem, but what he says isn't exactly wrong, either. She cares about Seth, too, and her protests come from a state of confusion rather than assuredness.

She doesn't know what Seth is to her, or what she is to him. He's her friend, at the least, and Chloe feels like that just needs to be good enough. ]

Well, I'm not going to live down to your standards. [ Chloe is nothing if not loyal to a fault, loyal in all the ways it hurts to be loyal. There wasn't anything in heaven, earth or hell that would make her betray Seth and considering she knows the Lord of Hell himself, she feels confident in thinking as much. ] Things can be different here, you know.

They already are.

[Not by choice but by necessity.]

I never said we screwed people on purpose. [He's pretty damn loyal too, just to a very select few.] The world's not black and white is all I'm saying. We could be doing what we've always been doing and that wouldn't make you better than us.

It's what we're gonna do when we get out of here, too. Nothing about Wonderland is gonna change that.

[They'll forget everything and Kate will still be dead. End of story.]

Believe me, I'm well aware of how complicated the world is.

[ It comes out more bitter than she intended. Maybe her world didn't have evil demon vampires or... whatever. Maybe she didn't have as difficult of an upbringing as Seth and Richie did.

But Chloe still had her own battles to fight. She wasn't naive. ]

That's why Seth loves it here, you know. [ Chloe knows it's not her place to say anything, but she can't help but come to his defense. ] This place can be is a second chance. If you let it.

I did let it. And you know what? It fucking screwed me over and now I'm right back where I started. Maybe worse.

[Of course Seth would like it here. He doesn't have to deal with Richie's people. He's got some girl he's pining over who's trying to change him, change both of them. He's seen this song and dance before, he's seen it rip them apart and he can see it coming a mile away.]

I get you're trying to help here, but you don't know what you're talking about. You care about him that much then let's just focus less on being my therapist and more on what will keep us all alive, alright?

Right. [ She widens her eyes, looking away and giving her attention back to her sorting.

He wasn't wrong. Maybe she just needed to realize that just because she was Seth's friend didn't mean she had to be Richie's.

Chloe is silent for a bit, worrying her bottom lip with her teeth. The silence is deafening, though, and Chloe finally clears her throat, unable to tolerate it anymore. ]

So... Zombies, huh?

[ Yeah great, good one, Decker. ]

[That's the problem with the Gecko's. They tend to be a package deal. Most people don't last.]

Not the first time, unfortunately. At least these ones we can see. Plus, they're pretty slow.

[He selects one of the guns, a semi-automatic pistol that packs a wallop, and holds it out to her.]

Aim for the head and keep your distance and we should come out the other side just fine. Right now, I'm gonna go set up some traps around the perimeter in case anything slips through.

Right, sure. I think I can handle that.

[ At least she's got good aim. Chloe has a feeling she will definitely be needing it. She moves some of the ammo around into neater piles and let's out a sigh. ]

Let me help. I have to do something or I'm just going to lose it sitting in here.

[They've got a house full of people with good aim. Richie's pretty sure between them and the traps, they can keep this place locked down.]

Okay.

[He points behind her to where a pile of sticks lay; they're long and thick and sharpened to a point on one end.]

We're gonna shove those into the ground around the perimeter outside. The walkers aren't too bright. They'll just impale themselves on them and get stuck. Should make our job a little easier. Then I'm gonna see about rigging up some explosives.

At least they're stupid. That's one thing in our favor.

[ She starts collecting the sticks into a pile to carry outside. It's probably better for her to do this anyway and let Richie stick to the more... Heavy duty ammunition. ]

What did you mean about zombies you can see? Was that another event?

Yeah. Seems like zombies are a popular thing around here. We had invisible zombies or some shit, but at least we were in the mansion then.

Invisible zombies? Seriously?

[ She rolls her eyes. ]

This place just really goes out of its way to screw with us, doesn't it?

Well, it wants us to die, right? So it can steal our memories. The more fucked up the event, the more it gets what it wants.

Sometimes it seems random as hell, though, so who knows?

Or sometimes we're just up to her neck in zombies.

Maybe we'll get another ski resort next time. I would definitely be okay with the snow this time.

That makes one of us.

[That's the event when Kate disappeared, when he went out in the snow and nearly froze to death with Clementine.

It's probably his least favorite.]

The cold and I don't really...get along.

[ Oh, God. That was so stupid. Of all of the things she could have brought up, it had to be that.

Tick another box of why Richie probably hates her. She doesn't know why it was so important to her that he didn't but... Whatever test this is, she's failing miserably. ]

I'm... I'm so sorry, I wasn't thinking.

[He doesn't hate her. He just knows his brother's track record with chicks. Not that his is that much better, but he's only at two in his entire life, and Seth was barely around for the second one.]

Don't worry about it. We've got bigger problems headed our way.

I just, you know... [ She sighs. What's the point? They have more things to worry about at the moment. ]

Forget it. I'm just going to go... Deal with these sticks.
