open; lay your weary head to rest
Who: Joel & YOU
Where: Tartarus
When: Throughout the event
Rating: R for eventual death
Summary: There's a hundred monsters between him and Ellie. Joel will cut through every last one of them to get to her if that's what it takes.
The Story:
[ Joel opens his eyes, and his heart sinks. The room he's in is unfamiliar, and it's immediately obvious what's happened. It's another event, the mansion transforming itself around them as they sleep.
At least he remembers who he is this time.
He gets to his feet and goes to the window, frowning at the sight of a dark, foreboding green sky. Then he takes out his phone and calls Ellie. The connection's spotty, but he manages to get her location - his main objective, because he's willing to bet that she's no longer in the next room over, as she had been when he'd gone to sleep the night before. He's also willing to bet that it's not going to be a picnic in the park getting back to her.
And as it turns out, he's right. He's barely taken two steps when something horrible and screeching whizzes past his head, and just the sound alone is nearly enough to drive him insane.
Oh, this'll be fun. ]

/also late
Max is huddled around one corner several yards away, mousy hair framing wide eyes as she peeks out toward Joel. She gestures at him frantically to come join her, before covering up her ears with her hands and staring at him for some sort of a reaction.]

Joel turns and looks when he hears the tiny hiss, doing a doubletake when he sees Max peeking out at him. Jesus Christ, how many teenage girls are there in this place?
He can't just leave her there, though. He nods, setting his jaw (he refuses to cover his ears, at least until the banshee comes back and starts screeching again) and marches over to her, eyebrows furrowed as he looks down at her and murmurs just loud enough to hear. ]
You all right?
no subject
I'm okay... Come on.
[She gestures at him to follow, before abruptly turning and quietly moving down the corridor.]
[[oc: FYI, Max's permission post is here. It has stuff about her time travel ability, which I figure she's been using to avoid/predict the monsters' movements. Hope that's ok!]]
cool!
He stares after her dumbly for a moment, but she's already moving, and he's not about to just watch her wander off by herself. Quickly, Joel follows, frowning as he hurries to keep up. ]

"Here-" she finally says, ducking into one last corridor... that's a dead end. "Perfect." The banshee's wails can be heard in the distance, quiet but growing louder each second.
no subject
And then she stops, and Joel stares at the dead end ahead of them with a sense of helpless dismay. ]
Shit.
[ He looks back over his shoulder, the way they'd come, back at the hallway again, shakes his head as he starts to retreat. ]
We're blocked in here - c'mon, we gotta get out of here before they catch up -
Gee I sure did mess up my formatting
No, this- [She hadn't thought about how to explain it. She struggles for a moment with finding the right words.] That thing is going to pass through here, but it won't look down this corridor.
sorry I'm so late, feel free to ignore this!
That's a hell of an assumption to make, kid.
[ He shakes his head, and pulls firmly at her sleeve in return. ]
Uh-uh. We're leavin', c'mon.
np!!! feel free to ignore this if it's too old, too
It's not an assumption. [The banshee's wail is louder still, but Max's urgent whisper cuts through.] We can't fight that thing...

[ But while they'd wasted time arguing, the banshees hadn't wasted any time at all. There's a horrible screeching from way too close, and Joel backs up immediately, pushing Max back behind him further into the hallway. ]
Shit -
1/2
Fuck- Joel-
[The monster approaches, and the screeching gets louder, but now it feels like it's coming from inside her head. Max wastes no more time- she raises her hand, fingers spread.
The whole corridor seems to buckle- and the screeching is replaced by a howling wind that grows and grows, with Max braced against it in the center of the corridor. Time shifts, sprints backwards, the banshee hurtling away from them.
Until finally Max decides it's enough, and time snaps-

Here! [She finally says, copying how their earlier conversation started. But instead of leading him into the dead-end corridor, she's now standing several feet away from Joel as he enters. Like she had teleported deeper down toward the dead end.
She gestures at him to come closer, and starts trying to explain things quickly.]
Okay, uh, I know this is gonna sound totally out there, but I have a superpower. Okay...? [She trails off slightly, amazed at how dumb she sounds.] And you need to trust me, because I know exactly what that monster is going to do.
no subject
What the hell...
[ He follows her - what else is there to do? - frowning. ]
You - what, you can teleport?
[ It wouldn't explain what she's saying, but it's the only thing he can think of. ]
Can you get us out of here?
no subject
...Uh, something like that. And yes, I can get us out.
[The banshee's wail is growing louder again. Max wishes she had time to do this whole thing properly. (Funny how you often find yourself rushing, even when you can bend time.) Right now, their situation depends on this older man's willingness to trust a teenage girl's ability to survive.
Not great odds.]
But you have to trust me, okay? You're gonna think I'm nuts.
no subject
Even luckier, he doesn't have much of a choice.
He turns his head to listen as the banshee draws nearer, then turns back to Max, grimacing and stepping closer. ]
Alright.
Show me whatcha got.
no subject
Then again, when the going gets tough, she does find some inner strength.
She shifts her voice lower, barely above a whisper.]
Okay... Here...
[She leads him toward one corner of the dead end, where she crouches down. She's obviously tense, and there's a tremor in her voice.]
It's gonna go right past. We just have to be quiet.
[Sure enough the wailing grows louder by the second, and before long the banshee makes an actual appearance. It floats by the intersection, glancing down a different corridor before continuing on, oblivious to the hiding pair.
Max lets out a long, low breath as the wailing grows softer.]
So far so good...
no subject
Huh. It worked. ]
Okay...
[ His voice is low, barely audible. ]
Now what?
no subject
But that fades. Very quickly.]
...Now I don't know. I've never made it this far before.
[And the mild headache building in her skull means she doesn't have too many rewinds left. She looks over at him, worry etched into her features, hoping he has some sort of plan or idea.]
...Where are we supposed to go?
no subject
[ What does that mean? Joel shakes his head before she can answer. It doesn't matter. ]
We're supposed to get the hell outta here before one of those things comes back.
[ He steps forward, peeking into the corridor and glancing left and right before looking back at Max. ]
C'mon, let's go.
