It may very well be the worst thing that's ever happened to you! | OPEN MINGLE

Where: EVERYWHERE!

Summary: A catch all for the Horrible Memory Truth Event!
The Story:

For the duration of this event, everyone's entire room will be replaced with a memory playing on loop. They will likely recognize the moment as soon as they see it – it is a moment they remember as the worst moment of their entire lives. It could be a memory from home or something that happened in Wonderland. Lengths of the memories will vary, but they will find that these are not memories they can merely watch – they can step into these memories and attempt to make changes to them, and the memories will be long enough that they have time to make changes (though no more than 24 hours). However, anyone who tries will find that it is futile. No matter what you do or how hard you try, the outcome is always exactly the same somehow. No changes you make will prevent that horrible outcome. It just happens over and over and over again no matter what you do.

On top of that, perhaps complicating any attempts to make changes, everyone will be forced to be honest for the duration of the event. No lies or half-truths are allowed, and filters will be gone for the entire five days. If something bothers someone then they will blurt it out, regardless of whether or not it hurts someone's feelings, and no one will be able to simply keep quiet when they have something to say. They must be truthful and honest with every word they say.

This is a catch-all log for all of your Worst Memory needs! Please mark your threads clearly in the subject line with your character's name and Room Number + Floor for character rooms, or just location if you're making a top level for a public place in the mansion (like the tea rooms or the kitchen) so people can see if there's already a thread available. And here's the plot post if you need it!

( jon learned all the important parts of being a good boy scout, thank you. he's sure, if damian needed to, he could figure out how to take care of himself regardless--but he doesn't need need to here, and maybe that's what makes it harder? it's probably not the time to contemplate stuff like that, though.

he follows damian into the kitchen, turns towards the cabinets and starts surfing through them for the easy to make hot chocolate stuff. he knows how to make it from scratch, but--that'd take more time and effort, and melting down chocolate is hard. jon is capable of doing many things, but patience isn't one of the virtues he's too big on. )

Marshmallows don't really sink. Sometimes they melt?

[Damian watches the boy work much like when Mikan made him tea. He, of course, wasn't to know for later how this worked. Not that he didn't enjoy some manipulation but he didn't like being reliant on anyone for simple things. So he let people teach him things like laundry and making cocoa and tea. The ultimate goal was always to be independent. To not need anyone.]

Hm, maybe. Is my timing off? [He leaned against the counter by the stove then perked up when something came to mind and he pushed off the stove to look for something.]

I can’t think of a reason why timing would matter for marshmallows. ( still, jon pulls out a fairly large bag of mini marshmallows from the cabinet, sets them down before rummaging further back inside of it to pull out the hot cocoa packets. two of them. he goes over to the stove next, grabs onto the tea kettle off of it and brings it over to the sink to fill it with water before returning it to the stovetop, and turning on one of the burners to start heating it up. )

What’re you looking for?

Timing matters for everything. [Damian calls from the cabinet he is rummaging in.]

Something. [He also answers unhelpfully, but at least it wasn't a lie. He finally pops back up with a bag of candy canes.] They used these once for coco. It was nice.

[Sure it was around Christmas when Alfred did it, but holidays weren't the only time one ate peppermints. Certain foods being constricted to certain days of the year was stupid anyway.]

Candy cane hot chocolate! Usually that’s for Christmas, but. . I guess it doesn’t really matter, here! ( would it even matter back home? probably not to jon. he directs damian to his pile of hot chocolate stuff, before turning to find some good mugs to put it in. jon grabs onto two: one with a puppy on it (his), and another with a kitten printed onto it (for damian) and sets them next to all the other stuff he’s gathered. )

Just hot chocolate for now?

Tt, shouldn't have to wait until a time of year to eat a certain thing anyway no matter where we are. [Holidays and Birthdays. It was all just another day in the end. The only real difference was the weather.

He makes a face at Jon's mug choice but says nothing about it. Maybe Jon just preferred his hot drinks in a mug with animals on them, just as Damian preferred his tea served in a china cup. It just tasted better.]

Hm, you said cookies, right? [Why are you holding out on those Oreos, Jon?]

Oh right, the Oreos.

( another cabinet for those, but he finds them and pulls them out to put them on the counter beside everything else. once the kettle starts whistling, jon opens up the hot chocolate packets, pours the powder into the cups, and then reaches over to grab the kettle off of the stove.

a normal person may have grabbed onto something to keep the heat off of them. jon doesn't bother, and instead pours the water on top of the powder, filling both mugs up equally before setting the kettle down onto a burner that's off and turning off the one that he had been using. a spoon's removed from a nearby drawer, and he. takes his time to stir the powder into the water. )

[Damian is sitting on the counter watching Jon busy himself around the kitchen. He was fiddling with one of the peppermint sticks and peeling off the plastic.]

Yes, those. [He hums and puts a peppermint stick in his mouth, looking down at Jon pours water into their cups and starts to stir. Seemed simple enough. He silently swats Jon's hand away from his mug and stars stirring with his peppermint stick instead. The red swirling with the dark liquid as it started to melt.

He is feeling quite accomplished.]

( to each their own, he supposes. damian can stir his own hot chocolate however he wants. jon goes back to stirring his own and once it's mixed up enough, grabs onto a handful of marshmallows out of the bag to put them on top and. gently presses them under the liquid's surface with the spoon, to get them to melt a little into it. )

And ice cream too, right?

[Damian shrugs. Might as well since Jon used the cheap powder stuff, they're gonna need stuff with actual chocolate in it.]

Sounds good.

[He took the candy cane out and put it back in his mouth, picking up the warm mug to warm his hands.]

( since they already have spoons, then--jon just moves over to the freezer and grabs out a whole pint of chocolate ice cream, setting it down on the counter and prying off the lid. who needs bowls when they can just eat right out of the pint, right? there's no adults here to tell them how to live their lives.

he digs his spoon right into it, putting a decent-sized heap of ice cream directly into his mouth before reaching for one of the oreo cookies and shoving that past his lips, too. )

[Damian didn’t really let adults tell him what to do back home either. Though he also didn't really indulge as much in sweets or junk so when Jon just stuck his spoon into the ice cream, Damian figures it all a part of the comforting experience and does the same.

His scoop is smaller though, because hey, humans get brain freezes when they eat cold stuff too fast.

This chocolate ice cream stuff is pretty good. He watches Jon stuff a cookie into his face, resembling a chipmunk trying to store food when his cheeks puff out.] Alien chipmunk. Slow down before you choke.

[Damian rolls his eyes at the sight, before plopping his next spoonful of ice cream into his hot coco, then finally sips it.]

( it is, in fact, all part of the experience. his mom does it all the time when she's having a bad day. obviously that means it's okay for them to do it, too. temperature doesn't bother jon at all though--so he chews the ice cream around the cookie, eats both at once and swallows it down after a few moments. )

Tastes better together--but I wouldn't recommend it for you. My teeth used to hurt a lot when I tried it.

I'll try to refrain. [Damian says flatly, because he might not know a lot about ice cream, but he knew not to eat it fast.

He watches the ice cream melt in his mug, then looks over when Jon mentions again about his time being human. Did he...want to talk about it? The conflict in his room seemed to be centered around it. He just wasn't very good at this being a good friend thing, so it felt like he was making blind guesses here.

Still, Jon didn't seem upset anymore. That was fast... Damian felt a little jealous, but he supposed Jon's memory wasn't anywhere near as bad as his. No one's probably is.]

Hm, do you miss it? Being human I mean. I sometimes miss having powers.

[He...didn't mean to say that much...]

No. Not in the least. ( there's no disdain to his tone or anything--but. ) I like being me. I. . always felt like there was something kind of off in my family, you know? Something different. Mom would say Dad was doing something, Dad would follow it up with something entirely different, he'd disappear to go work in the barn and come back soaking wet for no reason--

I mean, I'd like it if my Dad could be around a little more, but he saves the world, so I understand. And having superpowers, being half Kryptonian. . it's great. I like being me.

( imagining what it'd be like to permanently have normal vision again, to not be able to see and hear and remember the kinds of things he does--being human doesn't sound fun at all. and was he ever truly human? sure, his superpowers hadn't developed, but. . he was still half kryptonian all along. )

You had superpowers?

Tt, show off. [The dad being around more thing he got. He'd like if Father was around for at least his birthdays. He shrugs.] Saving the world is a full-time job.

[He thought Jon knew this already... but he couldn't imagine his future self sharing the info without a weird truth curse.]

Yeah. When I was resurrected.

Oh. ( he knows damian, but it's not like damian shares information freely either. but he.. died, so obviously, he had to come back from being dead. )

Did you like having them?

Of course. [What a stupid question. They were superpowers, he was invulnerable, fast, and all around unbeatable. No, stop, trying this being a good friend thing.]

But they weren't me. [Because pain and suffering are what taught him to be who he is. Would he change it? In a heartbeat, but it was he was and there is no changing that.

He takes a cookie and pops it into his mouth.]

Yeah. I don't think you need them. ( obviously. damian is strong and powerful enough regardless of whether or not he's got super strength or can fly. damian can take down superpowered beings even without having them himself, which is what makes him so special. it's one of the reasons why jon likes him so much.

there's a small grin on his lips as he speaks, picking up another cookie and waving it around a bit. ) I think you're amazing just the way you are. Heck, you could take me down in an instant if you felt like it. You don't let anyone being bigger or stronger than you get you down. Nothing stops Damian Wayne.

[Was he trying to be patronizing? No, he couldn’t say these things unless he thought they were true. Is this really how Kent thought then? He clutches his mug a little tighter, trying to think of what to say...]

Well that was an incredibly sappy thing to say. All true of course but still.

[His intelligence did reign supreme in this duo and kept a certain balance between them. The fact that Jon's speedy brain processing might one day maybe make him even smarter than the great Superman was concerning, but even Superman couldn’t compete with Father’s brains and Damian strived to be even greater than Batman himself. If Jon was destined to be even stronger than his father, Damian would be to.

He supposed that wasn't a very friendly thing to say or think.]

You have your moments to Kent [End it ther--] and I don't think I could do this without you here as my friend. [Fuck. He didn’t mean to say all that, but the words just spring out before he could even think to stop them. He grits his teeth and snatches the cookie from Jon's hand, eating it just to make himself stop talking!]

( jon expects no less of damian. he expects damian to shine even brighter than bruce; he’s already well-practiced in being his light (that’s what robins are, right?), and he knows that damian’s surrounded by numerous individuals to support him on his path to becoming the next batman. and jon doesn’t have any doubts he will become the next one to inherit that. just like jon will, some day, become the new superman.

still, there’s a smile on his lips as damian speaks. even when damian reaches over and steals his cookie. he knows where to get another, so it’s fine if damian gets all grabby with this one. )

I wouldn’t be able to do this without you here, either. But I think you already knew that. ( because it’s damian, of course. ) You’re an amazing friend, you know? You’re strong, and reliable, and I know you’ll be there for me no matter what. That’s why I really treasure our friendship.

[Of course he knew it. It was just different when people actually admitted needing him. What he didn't know was the fact that Jon thought he was actually a good friend. Yes, Jon had said similar things before, but it was usually under distress so the truth behind his words was always dubious.]

You-- [He frowns want to ask if Jon was sure about that, even after the whole nearly killing the boy when he first came here. Almost got him eaten by hounds, or planning out ways to kill him still in a possible incident he prayed would never come. He didn't know what it took to be a good friend, but he was pretty sure these weren't it. Still, Jon couldn't say these things unless he believes them to be true.]

...Sap. [He murmurs out around the cookie in his mouth. The next two cookies he picks up he pushes into Jon's stupid mouth to shut his stupid face. He just can't look at you right now. He'll just quietly sip his coco for a moment as he swallows his cookie.] I'm not a very good friend. Not sure why you still think that... but I will watch your back and continue to balance your shortcomings, so long as you'll balance mine.

( well. at least he doesn't fight damian as he shoves the cookies into his mouth, right? that'd make this whole thing a little less pleasant. he chews on them thoughtfully for a moment, mouth stuffed full of cookie until he's gotten it down enough to swallow.

damian doesn't know what it takes to be a good friend, sure. jon realizes that. damian is bossy, demanding, doesn't know when to stop, but he has been getting better, which is truly all anyone can ask for. he tries his best to be a good person, to do good things. which is all that matters.

jon wipes a hand over his mouth, smiles big for damian as he pulls out another cookie to offer it to damian. ) You've got it! I'll always watch your back, as long as you've got mine. Together, we'll be. . unstoppable!

[There was something comforting in knowing he had a superpowered minion watching his back.

Trust was hard earned with Damian. He was paranoid, anxious and most of all angry, but right now he didn't feel all of that. It was strange. Sure there was always his ever-present anger boiling under the surface, but he didn't feel like hitting something right now. So that was progress.

Damian takes the offering with a small shrug and finally is able to look Jon in the eyes again.] Course we will be. Just don't go nearly dying again. I know we have 5 but...

[He says what he couldn't back in the cave when Jon was trying to make him talk about the tower. About why Damian had been avoiding him. He couldn't bring himself to say it. He didn't even know how to begin explaining it.] I don't want you to experience death... ever.

( jon always finds there’s something comforting with having damian cover him. even if damian is a bit of a brat, goes too far half the time, and gets jon into more trouble than he cares to admit--damian watches out for him. keeps him out of trouble. it’s especially appreciated here, where they don’t have their parents to back them up.

he is quick to trust others, yes--but the level of trust damian has earned isn’t something one just hands over. what damian has was earned. he looks up into his eyes, and jon smiles right back down to him, pulls out another cookie while damian eats the one he offered. )

I know. ( five resets or no, dying isn’t a pleasant experience. even without firsthand experience, he’s well aware of that. ) Everyone dies at some point, Damian. But. . I’ll try to be careful, okay? I mean--if it happened again, I’d still do the same thing I did. ( jon doesn’t regret sacrificing himself to try and save damian. not in the least. )

But we’re a team, right? And teams have to stick together and listen to each other.
