Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]

Oh, it wasn't so bad.

[ but perhaps it's easy to say that when you were the popular one -- the school hero, a position carved out with daring and lawlessness. how many switches did they break on her before she earned that place?

either way, she leads daisy into a sharp and dramatic spin. ]

In that regard, the army was damned worse.

[Daisy can't help but laugh when she's spun around quickly. This was probably the most fun she's had in months.]

I guess that's saying something then. Although, guys would be useless without us around to help them.

Some of them, certainly.

[ momentum brings her back into peggy's arms with a bit of force -- a bit of a bump. ]

They're not all dreadful. Somehow.

[As soon as she knocks into Peggy, Daisy is quickly trying to move back to give her space.]

I guess a few of them are okay.

[Daisy knew who probably came to mind for Peggy at least.]

[ truth is, she's got a few worth sorting into the 'not dreadful' category. especially since arriving here, where suddenly she's confronted with a cavalcade of disarmingly decent and sensitive men. not what she's used to dealing with, frankly. and all her old tricks, her strategies to be underestimated by them, have a tendency to backfire.

Every rule has its exceptions, after all.

Yeah, I've always been kind of bad about following the rules.

[Especially if she felt like following the rules ended up hurting others.

Another song ends and Daisy was surprised that Peggy was still going, but maybe she was just waiting for Daisy to offer up a break.]

You want to go sit for a while?

-- I wouldn't mind a breather.

[ so the stop. they separate. and peggy stretches her arms ahead of her as she angles for a table -- grabbing a glass of something on the way. ]

Out of shape?

[Daisy teases, knowing full well she isn't. She isn't sure what Peggy just grabbed, but she takes one of the glasses too and follows behind her.

Dropping into the seat with a grunt, Daisy adjusts her dress a little as she's very much at risk of a wardrobe malfunction. She should've thought up some tape to go along with this dress.]

This is the second New Years Eve I've celebrated here. Well, that I can remember.

[ the teasing gets only a smile -- brief, tight in its corners. but it takes root as something more earnest the longer she goes. she settles by leaning forward in her chair, one elbow on the table. ]

Two too many. [ a beat. ] If you don't mind me saying.

[ some people do. ]

[She definitely does. In fact she laughs bitterly at the statement.]

Yeah. But, I guess there's some upsides to being stuck here.

[Daisy looks over to Peggy, genuinely happy about what she says next.]

I mean, it's not like we would've met otherwise.

[mucked]

[ -- it's such a beautiful night. and it wouldn't be fair, really, to spoil it with dark talk. peggy very nearly scolds the woman for what she doesn't quite say. truth is, she already knows she's dead some year after 2012. maybe she doesn't know the exact year -- but it's exact enough. ]

My dear, [ she huffs a sigh, ] I don't know what to tell you if you think meeting me, here, is any kind of silver lining.

[Daisy laughs softly at her comment, not thinking of how what she had just said could’ve upset her. She just meant they would’ve never crossed paths in general. Daisy didn’t even know about SHIELD up until 2013 anyway.]

Just take a compliment.

Oh, and before I forget, remind me to get you that lipstick we were talking about. Seriously a life changer.

You know where my room is.

[ one of the few who do, actually, and that's only because on the very first day she arrived in wonderland peggy had felt safer bringing people to her rather than going out and finding them. back then, it hadn't felt like her room. it hadn't felt like intel worth protecting. ]

Perhaps you ought to come drop some off. Some day.

[Eyebrows rising up at her offer to come to her room, Daisy lets out a soft laugh as she adjusts the way she's sitting.]

Wow. A dance and now you're offering for me to come by your room?

[Daisy knows that is not what she meant by that, she just felt like being a cheeky little shit.]

I did say perhaps and some day. [ a puff of breath. ] Besides, I've been told I ought to try and be a touch more social. Apparently it's good for my health.

Oh yeah?

[Considering she had to be told, Daisy wasn’t sure if reading her about it was good or not.]

Who said that?

[mucked]

-- A man who's got no business lecturing me on anti-social practices, I'm afraid. [ a beat. ] Have you met Tony Stark?

[ she doesn't know how 'famous' he is, necessarily, in his own time. ]

[Daisy nearly chokes on her drink when she mentions his name.

Wiping her mouth with the side of her hand, Daisy only has to look at Peggy to realize she wasn’t being sarcastic]

Yeah. I have. I’m surprised you didn’t put him in his place.

Who says I didn't?

[ -- and then followed the 'advice' anyway. regardless, she rather enjoys the surprise daisy displays. it puts a small smirk on her face. ]

I would have paid to see that.

[She really would have.]

You knew his dad, right?

[ a soft nod. but then: ]

Mind your tenses, Miss Johnson.

[ because as far as she's concerned peggy carter still knows howard stark. ]

Right. Sorry.

[Time is confusing okay?]

What’s he like?

[mucked]

[ now, there's a question. peggy could wax almost affectionate when it comes to howard stark. he is of that small small number she could most easily call a friend. even so, she goes for the more pragmatic answer. ]

Devastatingly brilliant. And a hazard to himself, not to mention those around him.

So, just like his son. From what I’ve seen anyway.

[Daisy realizes, judging by the look on her face and how she spoke about him if something ever happened there. She knew better than to ask though]

Must be weird to see his son.

[ she exhales, almost laughing. ]

Oh -- you have no idea. [ it's possibly been the 'weirdest' of this entire mess. weirder, somehow, than gaining real family in sharon. because unlike her, tony wears his tenderness and his love on his sleeve. it's flinty and its frustrating, yes, but howard's was much the same.

peggy could see through to that soft underbelly almost immediately. ]

For one, I don't want to think about all the wagers I've lost pertaining to whether or not Howard Stark would ever 'settle down' and start a family.
