Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:

[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering décor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.

Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]

[Ben can't stop grinning at any point he is with Caleb tonight. It's just too good.]

You look fine tonight, Lieutenant. [He can't hide the laughter in his voice. This has been nonstop since they left their rooms earlier. He knows how much Caleb hates this and he'll burn the image of his best friend finally in uniform into his mind forever.]

[beardman]

[Caleb shakes his head and gives Ben a playful shove.]

I look fine every night, Major. [He knows how amused Ben is about this whole thing, but he won't begrudge him too much. It's always nice to see him smiling about something. Even as they've been in Wonderland, it's been a long time since Ben's smiles came so freely.]

How do you wear this thing all day long? It's stifling.

[spycurious]

I wear it because I have no choice, unlike you. [He smirks and his tone is only pretending at chiding him.] In fact, I made sure to be extra polished every day to ensure your unshaven inclinations.

[...and maybe he just likes wearing the uniform and looking sharp. It makes him feel more secure. Uniforms are good for things like that.]

Personally, I think you look very fine and you're sure to attract the attention of some of the ladies here.

[beardman]

Oh, your sacrifice is duly noted, Major. [But he does smile at that.] How am I supposed to be a sneaky courier if I stick out like that, huh?

[The compliment's nice though, and he can't help but stand a little straighter.]

Oh, d'you think so? Not like I don't already, of course, but there's no shame in a little help I suppose.

[Ben nudges him lightly.] What do you think I told Washington to help you get away with all that?

I always said that you can't be a successful courier if everything about you declares to everyone within sight that you're a trained soldier. He listened, and he also turned a blind eye to the smuggling because it meant free supplies stolen from the enemy.
