[NYE Party] happy new year and lots of fun
Who: EVERYONE, but especially you!
Where: Wonderland Ballroom
When: New Year's Eve
Rating: PG - PG13 (will change if applicable)
Summary: New Year's Eve Party
The Story:
[ Previously in the month all residents received an invitation to a formal event: a black tie affair to ring in the New Year. The ballroom and adjacent areas are decked out for the party starting at eight o'clock sharp, meticulously planned and executed, glittering dΓ©cor to match the no doubt glittering attire as music pours into the halls from the dance floor.
Bars flank each side, service for all manner of alcohol unless a minor requests something, and the primary setting stage features an enormous clock for the countdown. ]

[ Where will you be when the clock strikes midnight? ]

Well, if you're tracing someone then there's a chance you might come under fire yourself. I was thinking some defensive maneuvering might be appropriate.
no subject
as much as she's hooked on his every word, she deflects much of that interest with a rather tepid counter: ] I do believe that's called taking cover. Or getting the hell out of dodge.
[ that is -- explain yourself, fitz, before she strains a muscle pretending like she doesn't care. ]
no subject
At home, the director has been asking for a means to condense the projection technology into something tangible. I implemented some things I've been thinking about. Of course, there are plenty of ways to tweak it if you aren't happy with the result, but it won't harm the intended use prior to then.
no subject
it practically pains her to ask for clarification: ]
What, like turning the holographic display solid -- [ she remembers him cautioning her against the array when she got handsy with it in the lab, yes. but... ]
Good God. You're talking about-- [ a shield. she doesn't say it aloud. ]
no subject
-- constructing a particle barrier from holographic input.

[ yeah-bloody-right. peggy touches an idle finger to a hairpin, as though almost sheepish in the face of where her mind wandered -- what associations she bridged within her thoughts. ]
Whatever the wording, I'll cop to it sounding rather remarkable.
[ remarkable. it's a word that gets said a lot, by her, about agent fitz. ]
no subject
[She's just never seen proper technology before, in most cases.]
no subject
[ although it's true -- she's saying it almost entirely because the work is light years beyond what she understands. ]
no subject
no subject
still, she continues just as nonplussed as ever. ]
-- Was it indeed your work what caused the problem? [ now she nearly insists on meeting his eyes, her chin ducking just so she can try and find a line where she can see him. ]
no subject
There were several influencing factors. It all came together in a preventable tragedy. I don't -- care much to pester you with the details.
[She can try, but his eyes retreat lower, flecked with shame.]
no subject
It's hardly pestering. [ peggy hums a note, pleasantly surprised that their relationship has come to this. ] Who do you think listens to the laundry list of details whenever Howard Stark mucks up?
[ very few people, in point of fact. the man has a hell of an ego. but there are some people, some few people, he trusts his failures with. peggy has always been one of them -- a fact she can barely tell the man's son, but that she shares rather freely with fitz just now.
after all, it's only fair that this exchange go both ways. ]
no subject
Not particularly relevant now anyway. The project here's over, and the one at home... Well.
[She's had time to read through the report. She must know all about his portal-related experiences by now -- if they'd mattered to her to get that far.]
no subject
but all the same! the portal at home, and its significance, isn't lost on her. her fingers rap against the table; she's stopping herself from reaching out and touching him. ]
You're right. It's not relevant right now. [ ... ] But relevance shouldn't be the yardstick by which we measure our conversations. Not always, at least.
[ she'll not say he's her friend -- in many ways, they're far from friends. but they're not strangers anymore either. they know too much about each other; they can't skate by on ticking only the professional boxes. even peggy knows that. ]
no subject
The point. [Deep breath.]
Is that there's no reason to continue on with fancies of heroism.
no subject
[ she reaches for her glass. ] We can agree on that much. At least.
no subject
You aren't the first person to tell me that.
no subject
Heroism is often a matter of public relations. Of public perception. That's not a game we get to play, Agent Fitz. We chose a profession that -- when done correctly -- keeps us far from heroism's limelight.
[ -- at least until one makes a name for herself founding a whole new organization and suddenly becomes a citizen of that same limelight she derides just now. ]
That's not to say you can't be heroic. [ she mitigates her point, invites a bit of compromise. ] Only that I've always thought it shined better as a byproduct than as an end goal.
no subject
Or maybe it's about being able to do the right thing. Unfailingly and unselfishly. I don't think I'll ever be able to accomplish that myself.
[ he pauses then, and forces out an unconvincing smile. ]
But that's quite enough of that sort of talk. This is supposed to be a party.
no subject
coming here has only enforced them. and maybe a bit of polish has been rubbed off her optimism -- maybe she's been too far out from steve rogers's heartfelt influence -- but peggy can't see the forest for the trees.
regardless! fitz registers his desire to move on. and, unwilling to alienate what little progress she's made, she nudges that ball none-too-gently back onto his side of the field. ]
You're right. But I've never been very good at earnest party talk. So I could tell you how you scrub up alright or you could do us a favour and say what you'd rather talk about.
no subject
Not me. If you want to see someone who knows how to dress herself, take a look at Jemma.
[He nods through the crowd, where Jemma is chatting with someone about something charming, wearing the most beautiful dress he's ever seen. It doesn't matter what she's actually wearing; anything is gorgeous when she's inside of it.]
no subject
[ really, fitz! yes -- jemma looks lovely. but saying so doesn't automatically negate the fact that he himself looks rather more pieced together than she's accustomed to seeing him. ]
no subject
[Or maybe he just wants to always be talking about Jemma Simmons at all times. She's his favorite subject.]
no subject
exhausted and embarrassed both. frankly, she finds it altogether harder a topic to tackle than down-to-the-wire portal work. so she takes a long long long drink of whiskey and does what she can to survive it.
give her a moment. and then, clearing her throat: ] It can't be easy. Maintaining a relationship through all the chaos this place flings at us like clockwork.
no subject
[Oh, does she want to talk about something else? He doesn't notice. His eyes haven't left Jemma's frame since he noticed her over there.]
